The work in this thesis has been dedicated to the subject of reverse engineering techniques using soft computing techniques. It particularly emphasizes on the problems of curve fitting for finding the optimal solutions. A detailed survey has been provided, in the literature review, on the subject reported by various authors (see [1-105] in Chapter 1). Although people have worked to find the direct methods for problem solving, yet an extensive study is needed for indirect solutions using heuristic like approaches. In this thesis, new reverse engineering techniques are proposed which utilize three soft computing approaches including Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA). Spline functions have also been used to find the optimal solutions for curve fitting problems. These soft computing techniques are used to find the optimal values of shape parameters in the description of the proposed spline functions. The underlying methods of reverse engineering consist of several phases including data extraction of image outlines, detection of corner points, and fitting curve using spline functions to the detected corner points. A total of nine algorithms have been designed and implemented. These algorithms are formulated to explain the process of reverse engineering. The proposed schemes help vectorizing the generic shapes and are demonstrated with various practical examples. The examples presented illustrate very well the outcomes and the robustness of the proposed algorithms. The comparisons of the proposed schemes are made with each other as well as with some existing schemes in the literature.

A Correlational study of Personality Traits, Self-esteem and Desire for Fame in TikTok Makers

This study was undertaken to (i) identify the relationship among personality traits, self-esteem and desire for fame and (ii) to explore the relationship of personality traits and self-esteem in prediction of desire for fame in TikTok makers. The sample was recruited through the snowball technique and consisted of 200 TikTok makers of Pakistan. The following internationally standardized scales were used: The Big Five Inventory, The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (1965) and The Desire for Fame Scale. A significant positive correlation was found between (1) openness, (2) extroversion, (3) agreeableness, (4) conscientiousness, (5) self-esteem and (6) desire for fame. Additionally, neuroticism correlated negatively with the six mentioned variables; and self-esteem significantly predicted desire for fame. Females scored higher in extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and self-esteem; whereas males scored higher in neuroticism. Also, higher levels of self-esteem and desire for fame were found in those who had increased frequency of making TikTok videos and those who belonged to big cities. In conclusion, personality traits, self-esteem and desire for fame significantly correlate with each other in TikTok makers. Researchers, social media activists, students, psychologists, and counselors can benefit from the findings of study.

Teacher Burnout: A Leadership Perspective and Measures to Reduce It

The needs, priorities, interests and characteristics of students, parents and school management have rapidly changed around the world in the last few decades due to the easy accessibility of knowledge. There is a conflict between community expectations and teachers' aspiration in relation to the status of a teacher. In this conflict, when the teacher sees herself as helpless, powerless, alienated, and with reduced personal accomplishment and low status, this is the stage of burnout. This is a serious educational dilemma and cannot be neglected. Research reveals that burnout of human service professionals is common in all fields including teaching (Barnett et al., 1999). Burnout teachers continue their work and cause harm to their own life and the well-being of students (Dworkin, 1985 & Smith and Bourke, 1992).Timely preventive and restorative measures will help to reduce this serious dilemma. In Pakistani society, Teacher Burnout (TB) is considered a closed/neglected phenomena, as teachers do not speak about the way they are treated and what they undergo as teachers in their career due to fear of demotions and job security. However, internationally, when 22% of the professionals who are burnt out are teachers (Schaufeli, 1998 cited in Pines, 2002) and 85% of burnout teachers remain in the system (Dworkin, 2001) Pakistan cannot be excluded? Literature gives three perspectives to TB viz. psychological, sociological and psychodynamic. This study further explores a new perspective viz. TB through a leadership perspective and the ways to reduce it. The study was conducted through a qualitative multiple case study approach. Data were gathered through personal interviews, document analysis, observations and informal conversations that helped to triangulate the data drawn. Two head teachers from two private secondary schools of Karachi were the primary participants of this study. A vice-Principal and three teachers were interviewed to know their opinions and views about their head teachers' perspective. The findings of the study suggest that TB has a different definition; different factors and remedies from a leadership perspective as compared to the other three perspectives. The data provided insights as to TB with reference to educational reforms taking place. Teachers are facing problems of coping. In order to reduce this problem, schools need to plan well in advance and provide necessary skills, so that teachers become flexible. The work environment in schools should demonstrate collegiality, equal distribution of work, shared vision, empowerment and benefits to teachers so that they can balance their
