In this work, the removal of eight ionic liquids (ILs) of types of bromide based imidazolium, pyrrolidinium and pyridinium having different alkyl chain lengths, two dyes (nylosan red N-2RBL, palatine orange) and copper from simulated waste water were investigated. Three adsorbent systems were used depending upon the type of adsorbate. These systems include inorganic system based on activated carbon (AC) and polymer based system including both natural and synthetic polymer. Two types of activated carbons (ACs), fabric and granulated, were used. The granulated activated carbon was further modified using nitric acid and sodium hypochlorite as oxidizing agents, to enhance the oxygenated functional groups on AC. They were well characterized in terms of surface chemistry by “Boehm” titrations and pH of point of zero charge measurements and porosity by N2 adsorption at 77 K and CO2 adsorption at 273 K. Upon modification, AC contained carboxylic, lectonic, and phenolic type’s functionality. The adsorptions of ILs on these ACs were studied at different temperatures (25-55 °C) and pH range. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of ILs onto ACs was an exothermic process. Their removal efficiency increased with increase in alkyl chain length, which was due to the increase in hydrophobicity of long chain ILs cations determined with the evolution of the calculated octanol–water constant (Kow) and negative values of free energies indicated its spontaneous nature. The 2nd adsorption system used in this work was based on polymer membranes prepared from chitosan (CS). The chitosan was mixed with two different amount of poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and chemically crosslinked by using a new crosslinking agent i.e. methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). The crosslinked CS/PVA membranes showed hydrogel properties and swelling was decreased with increase in PVA content. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the crosslinking reaction between the feed components and the existence of siloxane bond. The membrane swelling was greatly affected by pH, ionic strength and temperature of the solution. These membranes showed high swelling in acidic and low swelling in basic pH range. This switchable pH response of these membranes was exploited and used to adsorb dyes from aqueous solution. The effect of dye concentration, contact time, adsorbent amount and pH on the selectivity and sensitivity of the removal process was investigated. The pH of solution greatly affected the removal efficiency and maximum adsorption was observed at pH 3. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the dyes adsorption on the membrane was spontaneous and the process was endothermic. The effect of time, pH and salt concentration on swelling were investigated. The high adsorption of dyes in acidic media is very useful because most of textile effluents in acidic pH range and the membranes are quite suitable for such type of system. In 3rd system, acrylic acid was polymerized by gamma radiations in the presence of phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES). Different amounts of PTES were incorporated in acrylic acid and irradiated at different doses upto maximum of 30 kGy. The crosslinked poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) showed hydrogel properties and adsorb maximum of 246 g.g-1 of water. The increased PTES concentration decreased the EDS of the PAA hydrogels. Thermogravimetric analysis showed an increase in the stability of the hydrogels having high PTES content. The swelling of the hydrogel affected by pH, ionic strength and temperature. These hydrogels showed low swelling in acidic and basic pH range and high swelling around neutral pH. The adsorption of copper onto these hydrogels was studied. The pH of solution greatly affected the removal efficiency and maximum adsorption was achieved at pH 3. The effect of contact time, dye concentration, adsorbent amount and pH on the selectivity and sensitivity of the removal process was investigated. All the data of ionic liquids, dyes and copper metal were analyzed by applying different kinetics models such as: pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order, models, diffusion law and Boyd law. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for all adsorbates removal were measured and the experimental data was analyzed by applying adsorption model such as: Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir Freundlich isotherm models.

Background and Aim: To evaluate the association of pectoralis minor muscle length and the shoulder range of motion with and without shoulder pain.
Methodology: A sample of 214 participants with and without shoulder pain were enrolled in an analytical cross sectional study at Institute of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dow University of health sciences, Karachi. Questionnaire was provided to all participants after taking consent. Individuals were categorized into two equal groups i.e. one with and the other without pain). Shoulder active ranges were measured with universal goniometer and pectoralis minor length with measuring tape. Statistical Package of Social Sciences version 21 was used for data analysis. The descriptive variables were assessed for frequencies and percentages. Continuous variables were shown with mean and standard deviations and were correlated with bivariate correlation test. Considered significant was 0.05 p value.
Results: Females were 176(82.2%) and males were 38 (17.8%). Mean ± SD of age, weight, height, and BMI were 26.82 ±7.50, 58.45 ±12.11, 160.59 ± 12.43, and 22.18 ±3.78 respectively. The pain intensity negatively correlated with shoulder range of motions (rs = -0.307 to -0.775, p< 0.05) except medial rotation. Significant difference (p< 0.05) is found for length of pectoralis minor and range of motion between groups. There was also weak positive correlation between pectoralis minor index and shoulder lateral rotation (rs =0.215; p = 0.003).
Conclusion: The shoulder pain affects shoulder joint range of motion and pectoralis minor length. Decreased pectoralis minor muscle length accompanies limited shoulder range of motion except, medial rotation.
Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by involuntary disruptions of verbal expression. It occurs in about 5 % of pre-school children, where it frequently resolves spontaneously. However, stuttering persists in some individuals and thus about 1 % of the general population remains affected. Although the causes of this disorder remain very poorly understood, there is good evidence for genetic contributions to stuttering. To help elucidate the genetics of stuttering at a molecular level, we studied large families from the African and Pakistani populations in which this disorder occurs. We enrolled 3 large families from the Republic of Cameroon and 6 consanguineous families from Pakistan, all containing multiple members who stutter. Family members were diagnosed using the Stuttering Severity Instrument - 3. We performed a genome wide linkage scan using the Weber 10 microsatellite marker panel on three African families. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping using the Illumina 6K Chip was also done in the African families, as well as in the five newly ascertained Pakistani families. The program Pedcheck was used to test for proper inheritance within families. One African family was excluded from further analysis due to multiple inheritance inconsistencies. Here we report linkage results from one African family, designated CAMST01 and 5 Pakistani families. No significant linkage was found in family CAMST01 in the initial parametric linkage analysis. Additional non-parametric analysis was performed using the program MERLIN, however CAMST01 was broken into smaller sub-families for analysis to overcome the computational constraints of this program. When this was done, several SNPs on chromosome 15q displayed 2-point LOD scores of more than 3. In this analysis, no LOD scores exceeding 3 were observed at any other loci across the genome. In subsequent multipoint analyses on chromosome 15q, a LOD score exceeding 6 was obtained at this locus. Support for these initial linkage findings was obtained by typing microsatellite markers in this region, which also showed a significant two-point LOD score over 3. In addition, suggestive LOD scores of 2.5 were observed on chromosomes 12 and 6 when SNP linkage analysis was performed on each sub- pedigree alone and in pairs of sub-pedigrees. The region on chromosome 15 that contains markers showing significant LOD scores extends from 15q15.1 to 15q21.3, and is flanked by SNP markers rs1009913 (at map position 42.69 cM) and rs690054 (at map position 51.72 cM). Five consanguineous Pakistani stuttering families (designated PKST families) were also genotyped for 6090 SNPs on the Illumina plateform. Significant linkage, with a LOD score of 3.25 under an autosomal recessive model of inheritance, was observed on chromosome 3q13.13- 3q21.2 in family, PKST77. Analyses under dominant and additive models of inheritance produced no significant evidence for linkage in this family. Further genotyping of microsatellite markers and additional SNPs in this region defined a linkage interval spanning 14.2 Mb. Within this linkage interval, the exons of the candidate gene DRD3 (Dopamine Receptor D3) were sequenced in affected and unaffected individuals, however no novel variation was observed. Our results demonstrate that, in addition to the previously reported linkage to stuttering on chromosome 12 {Riaz, 2005 #96}, additional stuttering genes reside on chromosome 15 and on chromosome 3. Our results also formally prove the existence of genetic heterogeneity in the origins of this disorder.
