The research work describes the synthesis and characterization of compounds containing cyclic and heterocyclic moieties, Phthalimide and phenyl amide compounds aiming at search of new candidates to battle with microorganisms. Thanks to metals for being the charm of medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry since many decades. To widen this search, 15 potential ligands were synthesized. Compounds containing phthalimide moieties (HL1-HL6) were synthesized by the reaction of various anilines with phthalic anhydride. The compounds were isolated in pure form and checked by TLC and had sharp melting points. The single crystal structures of the compounds were also reported and discussed. Then the compounds were treated with metal salts e.g, Zn (II), Fe (III), Cu (II), Sb (III) and as a result thirty four new metal complexes were synthesized. Further, phenylamide derivatives (HL7-HL11) were synthesized by reacting anilines with acetic anhydride. HL12-HL15 were synthesized by reacting substituted anilines with maleic anhydride and succinic anhydride. Forty new complexes of these amides with metals e,g Zn (II), Fe (III), Cu (II) and Sb (III) have been synthesized. All of the synthesized complexes were heat, air and moisture stable, but during the synthesis moisture and air were avoided to prevent the oxidation of the compounds using standard Schlenk line and glove box techniques. The stability profile augments the link between organometallics and drug design and discovery. The purity of all synthesized compounds was conventionally monitored with the help of TLC in different solvents. All synthesized compounds and their complexes with transition metals were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, GC-MS, 1H and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. The structures were finally confirmed with the help of single crystal structures. All synthesized compounds and their metal complexes were evaluated for their carbonic anhydrase inhibition, intestinal alkaline phosphatase inhibition, antileshminial, anti oxidant, cytotoxic and antibacterial activities. The results of these bioassays are also reported and discussed in detail. The phenylamide ligands showed good carbonic anhydrase inhibition, as compared to phthalimides ligands. Further, the activity was enhanced by 40-60% in case of antimony complexes but the zinc complexes have shown slightly less carbonic anhydrase inhibition. Similarly, the complexes of antimony with amide ligands have shown excellent IAP inhibitory activities, while the zinc complexes have shown a maximum potential against IAP inhibition. Although most of the compounds are found to be good antileshminial inhibitors, the results have proved that the metal complexes of Zn, Cu and especially Sb have increased activities as compared to parent free ligands. Additionally, the said complexes also showed enhanced cytotoxic activities against BHK-21 and H-157 cell lines. The antibacterial activity against Gram –ve and Gram +ve bacteria were outstanding in case of metal complexes with the phthalimide ligand HL2. Results of antibacterial screening of compounds as percent inhibition against bacteria are reported. Overall, these newly synthesized metal complexes have provided important candidates for drug discovery. These candidates may be improved to be used as drugs, having enhanced pharmacological action.

Bâbâ Farîd’s Hymns in Granth Ṣâhib with Qur’ânic Backdrop: A Review

Bābā Farīd al-Dīn Ganj-i-Shakar, considered as the first Punjābī Sūfī poet, not only exercised his skill but also conveyed Qur’ānic and Prophetic (PBUH) message through his Punjābī poetry. His poetry is a rich source of Islamic teachings in lingua franca of the Punjab. The research intends to explore that whether the inclusion of his poetry in the Sikh scripture is recognition of Muslim mysticism or the poetry itself. The study attempts to examine the relation of the hymns of Bābā Ṣāhib with the teachings of Holy Qur’ān. Bābā Farīd, because of his high stature as an originator of Punjābī poetry, got a place in Granth Ṣāhib. The goal of this research is to highlight the pivotal position of Bābā Ṣāhib in connecting the two major religions of the world. The paper not only substantiates the historic position of Bābā Ṣāhib but also gives an insight to the services rendered by his poetry in promoting the interfaith harmony in the Sub-continent. This article focuses on Bābā Farīd as a literary and moral Canon, which led his work to be included in Sikh scripture. Moreover, it hints at the nuances of religious tolerance, mutual respect and love for knowledge, which lacks otherwise in a multi-religious society. In this article some of Bābā Ṣāhib’s verses in Granth Ṣāhib will be traced and analysed, taking into account their Qur’ānic interpretations. The comparative and somewhat historical approaches have been adopted to lay out a vivid analysis of his hymns in relation with the verses of the Holy Qur’ān and hence a message is extracted. Thus, he, evidently becoming part of one of the greatest anthologies of Punjābī poetry, attracted a huge outreach. The research question of this article is, whether the Holy Qur’ān is a basic source of Bābā Ṣāhib’s poetry or otherwise. It is strongly recommended that in order to attain actual harmony in our society, Bābā Ṣāhib’s work should be published in Shah-Mukhi script for the contemporary readership.

A Study of the Effectiveness of Virtual Eduaction Model in Pakistan

Virtual education is a distance mode of education which imparts education through synchronous and asynchronous types of educational technologies. It aims to provide equal educational opportunities to large number of learners beyond the gender biasness, geographical boundaries and cultural issues. It is cost effective, learner centered, activity based and flexible education system. It also provides educational opportunities to in service people, physically defected and persons bound to live in boundaries. Virtual education facilitates people to continue their education with ease and comfort without disturbing their normal routine responsibilities. Virtual learners can attend their teaching learning activities according to their own pace, time and schedule. With the advancement, application and vide acceptance of modern educational technologies virtual education is getting popularity day by day. In Pakistan first virtual education university was established in 2002 with clear mission “not for profit”. It is a federal charted university which has established 27 its own campuses and has affiliated 137 private virtual campuses in short spell of time. More than 100000 virtual learners have been enrolled in this university up to 2015. The present study was conducted with the main objectives (i) to study the framework of virtual education model, (ii) to highlight the instructional paradigms of virtual education, (iii) to identify the significance of virtual education in Pakistan, (iv) to evaluate the components of virtual education model in Pakistan, (v) to explore the challenges faced by virtual students in Pakistan, and (vi) to recommend measures for improving virtual education model in Pakistan. The population of the study consisted of faculty members and the virtual learners of the MBA program of the virtual university of Pakistan. The convenient sampling technique was adopted for study. The total sample of the study was (451) consisted of one hundred (100) faculty members, three hundred and fifty one (351) virtual learners. The study was descriptive in nature therefore survey approach was considered appropriate and adopted for its completion. Two (02) questionnaires on five points rating (likert) scale were prepared. Research tools were finalized after their pilot testing with the calculated reliability of the research instruments. The samples could only be found virtually therefore research tools were converted into google.doc to collect data. Collected data was coded in SPSS version 20 and was statistically analyzed by using percentage, mean score and standard deviation. Form the data analysis it was found that virtual education was an effective mode of education in Pakistan. The study also concluded that virtual education model of Pakistan was providing quality education based upon the parameters of learner centeredness, cost effectiveness, activity based, need based and meeting international standards of education. Therefore, the study also recommended some suggestions to improve the virtual education model. Some other public and private sector universities should also start virtual education in Pakistan to endorse quality education. Teacher student interaction should be made more cohesive. Private virtual campuses should ensure accountability and accreditation. Co-curricular activities should also be given proper weightage in virtual education.
