The study was carried out in Dir Kohistan Valley; district Dir Upper of the Province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, to explore the flora of Taxo-ethnobotanical potential and estimation of Antimicrobial activities of selected medicinal plants of the area. It is the first attempt to document the Taxo-ethnobotanical survey in the selected area. About 458 angiosperm species were recorded, which consists of 98 families and 291 genera. The study was also extended to the flora of Gymnosperm which is represented by 3 families with 11 species of 8 genera, among them 9 species is indigenous and 2 species were exotic in the study area. A total of 469 species of both Angiosperms and Gymnosperms were collected. The ethnobotanical study identified that these species are for 46 different uses. The major uses of 144 plant species were calculated. Among them 94 plants were used as medicine; 50 fodder; 35 fuel wood, wild fruits and hay fodder, 20 species each, 19 pot herb; 18 fence, furniture and utensils, 11 species each, shade tree, ornamental, hedge plant and agricultural tools, 10 species each, 9 soil binder, construction, packing/ roping and poison, 7 species each, wind break, spice/flavoring agent, 6 species each, dye and fish poison 4 species each, bee attractants, smoking medicine, stick/handles, cushion plant, miswak, green pesticide, graveyard things, Incense/perfume and beverage 3 species each, wood carving, fishing checks, snuff ash, dry fruits, timber, soil reclamation and soil fertilizer 2 species each, torch wood, Ink, paper, granary/basketry, beads, resin, root stock, charcoal and brooms 01 species each of herbs, shrubs and trees in nature. The part used data shows that mostly the whole plant, leaves, fruit, roots and stem were in common use. After the extensive ethnobotanical survey, 25 plants were selected for anti-bacterial investigation, due to the reason that the local people commonly used these plants for various ailments. Out of 25 selected plants 13 showed anti-bacterial activity, while the remaining 12 were inactiveX against bacteria. There are some high valued medicinal plants species like Taxus wallichiana, Aconitum heterophyllum, Pinus gerardiana, Betula utilis and some other ethnobotanically important plants species which are near to extinction, because of various types of risk. It is required to conserve their germplasm in the area, to protect these valuable plants.

گزشتہ سال کے آخر میں اردو دنیا کو جس حادثہ فاجعہ سے دو چار ہونا پڑا وہ مشہور نقاد پروفیسر کلیم الدین احمد کا انتقال پر ملال ہے، ان کی شخصیت ایک جلوہ صدرنگ تھی، وہ پروفیسر بھی رہے اور ایڈمنسٹر بھی ناقد بھی تھے اور ماہر تعلیم بھی، محقق بھی تھے اور شاعر بھی اور ان سب سے بلند ایک شریف انسان بھی۔
ان کی شخصیت میں جہاں گوناگوں صلاحیتیں جمع ہوگئی تھیں وہاں وہ بڑی متنازعہ فیہ بھی رہی، ان کی رایوں سے اختلاف بھی ہوا اور اتفاق بھی، اردو شعر و ادب کے ایوان میں ان کی آواز سب سے جداگانہ اور منفرد تھی، ان کی تحریریں کچھ ایسی انتہاپسندانہ اور سخت تھیں کہ ایک بڑا طبقہ ان سے ناراض ہوگیا، مگر ان کی رایوں سے اختلاف کے باوجود یہ کہنا پڑتا ہے کہ ان کے قلم سے اردو کے سرمایہ میں اضافہ ہوا اور تاریخ ادب اردو میں اپنا ایک خاص مقام بناگئے، جس کی وجہ سے وہ کبھی فراموش نہیں کئے جاسکتے۔
کلیم الدین احمد ۱۹۰۸؁ء میں پٹنہ کے ایک علمی و دینی گھرانے میں پیدا ہوئے، ان کے والد ڈاکٹر عظیم الدین احمد عربی و فارسی کے فاضل اور پٹنہ یونیورسٹی میں صدر شعبہ تھے۔ ان کے پرنانا حکیم عبدالحمید پریشاںؔ نہ صرف اعلیٰ درجہ کے طبیب، علامۂ وقت بلکہ اردو، فارسی، عربی کے ممتاز و قادر الکلام شاعر تھے، یہ حکیم عبدالحمید وہ بزرگ تھے جن کے والد مولانا احمداﷲ صادقپوری ممتاز اہلحدیث عالم اور حضرت سید احمد شہیدؒ کی تحریک سے وابستہ تھے، مجاہدین کے خلاف جو مقدمہ قائم ہوا، اس میں انھیں بھی حبس دوام بعبور دریائے شور کی سزا ملی تھی اور جزیرہ انڈمان میں انھوں نے وفات پائی، ان کی ساری جائداد بھی ضبط کرلی گئی تھی۔

حقوق نسواں کا عالمی معاہدہ اور شریعت اسلامیہ: تقابلی مطالعہ CEDAW

Women are confronted with a lot of problems. In different parts of the world, some social and cultural attitudes still discourage the women from getting their established and assigned rights. The factors which are responsible for this phenomenon include societal norms, orthodoxy and some social customs contrary to islamic instructions. For instance, discrimination against women could be in terms of inadequate nutrition, denial or limited access to education, health and property rights, child labor, domestic violence and forceful marriage. So far as the Islamic instructions are concerned, these are derived from Quran and Sunnah and clearly describe women’s rights but, due to some socio-religious customs and undesirable behaviors the societal status and role of women have been badly affected. An international document, the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women also lists the rights of all girls and women. CEDAW recommends that all discriminations against girls and women must be ended. In this paper, the terms have been analyzed in the context of islamic instructions and teachings, in order to provide academic material for bringing positive change in the society.

Laser Induced Surface Structuring of Metals Correlated With Breakdown Spectroscopy and Field Emission Properties

In this dissertation three important aspects of laser-matter interaction for four selected metals i.e. Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo) and Tungsten (W) are addressed. These aspects include: (1) Understanding of physical processes involved in laser ablation and surface structuring, (2) The role of two important laser induced plasma parameters i.e. electron temperature (Te) and electron number density (ne) for the growth of various surface structures and (3) Applications of these surface structures for enhancing the field emission properties of the selected metals.The laser induced surface structuring is performed by employing both nanosecond (ns) and femtosecond (fs) i.e. Nd:YAG (1064 nm, 10 ns , 10 Hz) and Ti: sapphire (800 nm, 30 fs , 1kHz) laser irradiation. The crater depth is investigated using optical microscope analysis. The surface morphology is explored by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. For the estimation of plasma parameters Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis is employed. The field emission properties are explored by using the self-designed and fabricated set-up in a diode configuration under ultrahigh vacuum condition. The whole dissertation is divided into three parts.Part A deals with the laser induced surface structuring of metals and its correlation with the plasma parameters at various irradiances ranging from 6 GW/cm2 to 50 GW/cm2.The irradiation is carried out for three metals i.e. Zn , Mo and W with low, moderate and high melting points. SEM analysis of laser ablated Zn reveals the formation of microscale ripples, wave-like ridges with cones and cavities. For Mo, large sized grains along with cavities and conical interiors, dense ridges with droplets are seen. For W, the formation of grains with pronounced cracking and large sized cones are observed. The evaluated values of Te explored by LIBS analysis vary from 5973 K to 6240 K for Zn, 6526K to 9305 K for Mo and 7800 K to 16383 K for W. Similarly The values of ne vary from 1.35861×1018 cm-3 to 1.44331×1018 cm-3 for Zn, 0.58,878 × 1018 cm-3 to 0.72,067 × 1018 cm-3for Mo and 0.46,085 × 1018 cm-3 to 0.69,679 × 1018 cm-3 for W.It is found that surface structuring of selected metals strongly depend on the laser irradiance and plasma parameters. Part B and C of the dissertation are independent and deal with ns and fs laser induced surface structuring of selected metals for the enhancement of FE properties. The part B deals with the investigation of FE properties of the ns laser irradiated Cu and W metals at four laser irradiances ranging from 13 GW/cm2to 50 GW/cm2. SEM analysis revealed the formation of ridged protrusions, localized melt pools, cones and pores for Cu, whereas, cones, grains and mounds covered with porous structures are observed for W. The Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plots are found to be linear and confirm the quantum mechanical tunneling phenomena for the structured metals. The values of turn-on field, field enhancement factor and maximum current density rangefrom 5 V/ μm to 8.5 V/ μm , 1380 to 2730and 147 μ A / cm2 to 375 μ A / cm2 for Cu and 5 V/μm to 8.5 V/μm,1300to 3490 and 107 μA/cm2 to 350 μA/cm2 for W respectively. Part C deals with the investigation of FE properties of fs laser irradiated W carried out at six different irradiances ranging from 0.2 × 1014 W/cm2 to 6.9 × 1014 W/cm2. The SEM analysis revealed particulates, grains and nanoscale ripples formation. The values of turn on field, field enhancement factor and maximum current density range from 7 to 15 V/μm, 460 to 6120 and 134 μA/cm2 to 341 μA/cm2 respectively. The obtained FE parameters are well correlated with the surface morphology and comparable to the previously reported values.Overall dissertation presents the idea that both laser irradiance and plasma parameters can provide a better control over micro/nano structuring of metals which make them potential candidate for the enhancement in the FE properties as well as other applications.
