The present research project pertains to detailed taxonomic and pharmacognositc studies of seven herbal medicines namely Neem (Azadirachta indica) the officinal part of this plant that is leaves and aerial parts used in traditional medicines for diabetes, skin diseases, malaria, hepatitis etc.; Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) the leaves of this plant are used for digestion, anaxiety, cholesterol and pain; Sana Makki (Cassia angustifolia) the aerial parts of this plant are used for constipation, piles, migraine, heart diseases etc.; Brahmi (Centella asiatica) the aerial parts are used for wounds, digestion, mental depression etc. ; Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) the aerial parts are used for cough, cold, fever, flu and allergy; Henna (Lawsonia inermis) the leaves and powdered leaves are used for hair, jaundice and skin diseases and Tobacco (Nicotiana tabaccum) the leaves are used for wounds, baldness, pneumonia etc. The present study was aimed to investigate indigenous medicinal uses, marketing status, macro and microscopical characters (LM & SEM) of pollen, foliar epidermal anatomy, behavior of powdered drug on treatment with different chemical reagents, fluorescence analysis (under visible & UV light) and preliminary phytochmeical tests to differentiate the genuine source from its adulterant. Such investigation may provide basis for authentication, standardization and characterization of genuine drug. The details of information regarding the nomenclature, distribution, organoleptic analysis, macro and microscopic characters, solubility tests, fluorescence analysis, preliminary phytochmeical screening and pictorial guide established in this study facilitate in authentication of genuine drug Azadirachta indica (Neem) from its substitute Melia azedarach, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) from Chenopodium ambrosoides, Cassia angustifolia (Sana Makki) from Cassia obtusifolia, Centella asiatica (Brahmi) from Bacopa monnieri, Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon Grass) from Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Lawsonia inermis (Henna) from Mirabilus jalapa and Nicotiana tabaccum (Tobbaco) from Helianthus annuus. It is concluded form this study that such type of findings will be useful in preparation of monographs on these plants particularly and establishing taxo-pharmacognostic standardization on identification, quality, purity and classification of the medicinal plants as per WHO guidelines for drug discovery development at global perspectives.

This article probes into poetical citation in the historical letter of Ibn-e Zaydun, a renowned Andalusion poet of 11th  century A.D. Ibn-e Zaydun was imprisoned by king of Córdoba, Ibn-e- Jahoor. While in prison, Ibn-e- Zaydun wrote Ibn- e- Jahoor a letter lamenting that he has been thrown into prison for no reason and appealed  for mercy and leniency towards him. The depth of thoughts reflected in the poetic text of Ibn- e- Zaydun`s letter testifying  his command over  poetry. The poet who is  quoted in the letter of Ibn- e- Zaydun is known as Al- Mutanabi. The article examines the parts of the Ibn- e- Zaydun`s letter citing the poetry of Al- Mutanabi in order to make it effective in achieving the objectives of the study.

Comparison of a New Opposed Phase Imaging Protocol to the Standard Conventional Mri Protocol in Demonstration of Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease at 1. 5T.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare diagnostic yield of a new Opposed Phase Imaging protocol [OPI] to the standard conventional MRI protocol [CONV] in demonstration of lumbar degenerative disc disease at 1.5T. Materials and Methods: A total of 102 patients suspected of lumbar disc disease were examined using the two protocols.Images from both protocols were then analyzed independently by two radiologists. Categoryof disc disease[normal, bulge ,protrusion, extrusion] andanatomic clarity of spinalstructures related to disc disease[nerve roots, osteophytes, modic changes and hemangiomas ]were assessed using astandard4 pointscoring scale [1=inadequate,2 =adequate,3=normal ,4=optimal.] Comparison of the results from the two protocols was done using wilcoxons analysis, Mann Whitney test and the student paired t test. Results: Of the 510 discs (in 102 patients) examined by OPI and conventional protocols, 488[96%,CI 93.93-97.45] had concordant diagnosis for disc disease and associated pathologies. Only 1% of the discordant disc lesions showed radiologically significant findings. There was no statistically significant difference [P >0.05] among the two radiologists in the subjective scores given for the two protocols. OPI received similar scores to conventional protocol in optimally demonstrating osteophytes, modic changes and hemangiomas [p > 0.001].OPI however received significantly lesser scores [P< 0.001] for anatomic clarity of the discs and nerve roots. The average imaging time for OPI protocol was 7 minutes which was significantly shorter [p <0.001, CI 7.07-7.19] than that of conventional protocol of 16 minutes. Conclusion: OPI has comparable pick up rate for pathology in lumbar degenerative disc disease despite the fact that the new protocol gives less anatomic clarity compared to the conventional protocol for discs and nerve roots. The new protocol is adequate in demonstrating other spinal structures [modic changes, osteophytes and hemangiomas] related to degenerative disc disease. OPI takes a significantly shorter imaging time and can therefore be an alternative time saver in imaging lumbar disc disease.
