Salinity is an abiotic stress that can significantly reduce the crop productivity. The primary purpose of the research was to explore the breeding potential of cotton for salinity tolerance. For this purpose, 50 cotton genotypes were grown at control, 10 dS m-1 and 15 dS m-1 salt stress conditions at seedlings stage. Variations were observed for all the genotypes for chlorophyll contents, root and shoot length, fresh shoot and root weight, dry root and shoot weight, Na+, K+ and K+/Na+. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variance was moderate to high, heritability and genetic advance was also high, which indicated that genotypes can be improved for salinity tolerance at seedlings stage through selection. The genotypes that performed better for the characters having high heritability were selected as tolerant genotypes whereas the genotypes that performed poor for characters were considered salt sensitive. NIAB-824, FH-312, FH-118, MNH-992, CIM-612 and KEHKSHAN were found salt tolerant and SB-149, BS-80 and FH-114 were found salt sensitive genotypes. The Line × Tester mating design was used to find out the genetic components for yield (Plant height, Number of bolls, boll weight and seed cotton yield), fiber traits (fiber fineness, fiber strength, fiber length and ginning out turn), ionic traits (Na+, K+ and K+/Na+) and physiological traits (H2O2, SOD, POD, CAT and TSP) at control, 10 dSm-1 and 15 dSm-1 salt stress conditions. Analysis of variance indicated that there were significant differences among genotypes. The salt stress caused the reduction in all traits except Na+, ginning out turn percentage, H2O2 and SOD. Non- additive gene action was found for yield, fiber, ionic and physiological traits except Na+ ions which indicated the additive gene action. Proportional contribution to total variance for all the traits was maximally contributed by the lines whereas tester’s contribution was less. Among lines, KEHKSHAN was the best general combiner for plant height, number of bolls and seed cotton yield under control, 10 dSm-1 and 15 dSm-1 and FH-312 was best general combiner for fiber fineness, fiber length, fiber strength, ginning out turn percentage and catalase under control, 10 dSm-1 and 15 dSm-1 salt stress and FH-118 had highest GCA effects for K+ concentration, SOD and TSP under control and salt stress. Among testers FH-114 was best general combiner for most of the traits. SB-149 had positive significant GCA effects for fiber fineness, fiber length, fiber strength, POD and catalase under control and salt stress. KEHKSHAN×FH-114 had positive and significant specific combining ability effects for most of the traits and hybrid KEHKSHAN × FH-114 also indicated highly significant mid-parent and better parent heterosis for most of the studied traits. The selected hybrid can be utilized in the future breeding programs against salt stress.

آغا وفا ابدالی (۱۹۲۹ء۔۱۹۹۸ء) کا اصل نام آغا ابو الحیات خان ابدالی تھا۔ آپ پٹنہ (عظیم آباد) کے ایک علمی گھرانے میں پیدا ہوئے۔ آغا وفا ابدالی نے نواب سراج دین خان سائل دہلوی(جو داغ ؔدہلوی کے داماد تھے) کے آگے زانوئے تلمذ طے کیا۔(۷۸۸) قیام پاکستان سے پہلے آپ کلکتہ سے شائع ہونے والے ہفت روزہ ’’چونچ‘‘ کی مجلسِ ادارت میں شامل تھے۔ آپ ہندوستان میں دہلی کے روزنامہ ’’وحدت‘‘ اور ’’انصاری‘‘ میں بھی فکاہیہ کالم لکھتے رہے۔ قیام پاکستان کے بعد آغا وفا ابدالی نے پسرور میں مستقل سکونت اختیار کی۔ آپ روزنامہ ’’روشنی‘‘،’’کراچی‘‘،روزنامہ ’’انجام‘‘ کراچی ’’نوائے وقت ‘‘،لاہور ،’’کوہستان ‘‘،لاہور اور ’’سفینہ‘‘ لاہور سے بھی منسلک ہوئے اور ان میں کالم لکھتے رہے۔آپ نے پسرور سے شائع ہونے والے ہفت روزہ ’’نوائے پسرور ‘ ‘ کی بھی ادارت سنبھالی ۔(۷۸۹)

Exploring Individual and Social Factors that Influence Human Belief: An Analysis in the Light of Quran and Sunnah

استقصاء العوامل المؤثرة في الاعتقاد الإنساني من الناحية الفردية والاجتماعية: دراسة تحليلية في ضوء القرآن والسنة This research work was primarily designed to explore the factors that affect and change the human beliefs. The paper particularly addresses the issue from individual and social perspectives in relation to Holy Quran and authentic traditions of Holy Prophet PBUH. Qualitative research approach was employed for the collection and demonstration of data. The review of relevant literature concluded that there are many factors which seriously affected and changed the human beliefs. However, the most important and common factors are four: individual, social, religious, and economic. These factors play a significant role in changing Islamic beliefs of an individual. In this context, it was recommended that Islamic states in general, and Islamic scholars in particular should play their role to preserve Islamic beliefs in its original form. Furthermore, Muslim scholars should also design the strategy of purging beliefs from impurities and presenting them in systematic, logical and rational way along with their impact on the society

A Clustering Based Indexing Technique of Modularized Ontologies for Information Retrieval

Indexing plays a vital role in Information Retrieval. With the availability of huge volume of information, it has become necessary to index the information in such a way to make easier for the end users tond the information they want e - ciently and accurately. Keyword-based indexing uses words as indexing terms. It is not capable of capturing the implicit relation among terms or the semantics of the words in the document. To eliminate this limitation, ontology-based indexing came into existence, which allows semantic based indexing to solve complex and indirect user queries. Ontologies are used for document indexing which allows semantic based information retrieval. Existing ontologies or the ones constructed from scratch are used presently for indexing. Constructing ontologies from scratch is a labor-intensive task and requires extensive domain knowledge whereas use of an existing ontology may leave some important concepts in documents un-annotated. Using multiple ontologies can overcome the problem of missing out concepts to a great extent, but it is di cult to manage (changes in ontologies over time by their developers) multiple ontologies and ontology heterogeneity also arises due to ontologies constructed by di erent ontology developers. One possible solution to managing multiple ontologies and build from scratch is to use modular ontologies for indexing. Modular ontologies are built in modular manner by combining modules from multiple relevant ontologies. Ontology heterogeneity also arises during modular ontology construction because multiple ontologies are being dealt with, during this process. Ontologies need to be aligned before using them for modular ontology construction. The existing approaches for ontology alignment compare all the concepts of each ontology to be aligned, hence not optimized in terms of time and search space utilization. A new indexing technique is proposed based on modular ontology. An e cient ontology alignment technique is proposed to solve the heterogeneity problem during the construction of modular ontology. Results are satisfactory as Precision and Recall are improved by (8%) and (10%) respectively. The value of Pearsons Correlation Coe cient for degree of similarity, time, search space requirement, precision and recall are close to 1 which shows that the results are signi cant. Further research can be carried out for using modular ontology based indexing technique for Multimedia Information Retrieval and Bio-Medical information retrieval.
