In this thesis the structural, elastic and electronic properties as well as electric eld gradient of the strongly correlated intermetallics LnX3 (Ln = La-Gd, X = In, Sn) have been investigated by using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital (FP-LAPW+lo) method within the framework of density functional theory. The structural properties of these compounds are calculated by LDA, GGA, meta-GGA, WC, B3PW91, LDA+U and GGA+U schemes. The calculated lattice parameters are found consistent with the available experimental results. Our results show contraction of lattice constant along the series and the divalent state of Eu is also veri ed. The itinerant and localized behavior of electrons in f -states of these compounds is also discussed. These compounds have 4f orbitals and hence strong electron-electron correlation e ect is expected, therefore, the electronic properties are also calculated with the Hubbard potential U (GGA + U and LDA + U) and the e ect of Hubbard potential on the density of states is discussed in details. The relativistic e ects are also considered by including the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The spin-orbit coupling predict the correct electronic properties and also reveals the splitting of 4f states of the rare-earth elements. It a ects the band structures of the compounds and induces non-degeneracies in some degenerate states in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Furthermore, the SOC e ect increases from left to right in the lanthanide series in the LnIn3 and LnSn3, which shows interesting nature of SOC e ect in the periodic table. The elastic constants of these compounds are also calculated. Our calculated values for the elastic constants of the compounds are closer with the available experimental values as compared to the other theoretical results. The mechanical properties for the compounds under studies such as shear iii modulus, bulk modulus, Young''s modulus, Kleinman parameters, anisotropic ratio, Poisson''s ratio, Lame''s coe cients are also determined . The Cauchy pressure and B/G ratio are also investigated to evaluated the ductile and brittle nature of LnIn3 and LnSn3 compounds. The Sound velocities for shear and longitudinal waves, and Debye temperature also explored on the basis of mechanical properties. The Electriceld gradients (EFG) are also calculated for the rare-earth intermetallics LnIn3 and LnSn3 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) using the GGA, GGA + U, as well as GGA + SOC. Our results show that the EFGs calculated by GGA+U approach are in better agreement with the available experimental values of the M ossbauer spectroscopy as compared to the other theoretical schemes. Our results show nonzero EFGs at rare-earth sites in the AFM phase. The present research will add some theoretical understanding of these materials and will alsoll the gap about some of the physical properties of these compounds in literature.

Which of Abrahim’s Son Was Sacrificed?

The issue of the sacrifice of Abrahim’s son remain an important bone of contention among the followers of Abrahamic religions. The Jews and Christians believe that it is Ishaq while among the Muslims some opine in favour of Ismail while favours Ishaq. To a common man it seems to be not an important issue whether it is Ismail or Ishaq but when its implications are taken into account then it is of great value to Muslims, Jews and Christians that who was sacrificed? Ismail or Ishaq. In the following pages an effort is made to look the issue in the light of some contemporary researches conducted in the Indo-Pak Subcontinent in the first half of the 20th century. Different positions on the issue are evaluated with the Quran and other holy scriptures and in the contemporary western scholarships.

Expression Patterns of Β–Catenin, Cox-2 and P27 in Colorectal Carcinomas at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, as indicated by WHO. Local published and unpublished data indicate that patients in the developing world with colorectal cancer tend to present at an early age, and possibly at a more advanced stage than described in the developed world. The reason for this difference is unclear, and as yet undefined. The Wnt/APC pathway, Microsatellite instability pathway and the Epigenetic pathway are three pathogenetically distinct pathways that have been implicated in the development of colorectal cancer. Exploration of these patterns may allow us to elucidate possible reasons for these differences. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression patterns of three molecules, β-catenin, p27 and COX-2, which represent various points of interaction along the Wnt/APC pathway, in colorectal cancers diagnosed at the Department of Pathology,Aga KhanUniversityHospital,Nairobi, and to correlate the findings with clinical, demographic and pathological characteristics of the study subjects. Methods: Tissue blocks of 100 consecutive colorectal cancer resection specimens received during the period March 2006 to Dec 2009, were retrieved from the archives at the Department of Pathology. Haematoxylin and Eosin slides were prepared and reviewed for purposes of confirmation, typing, grading and staging of the colon cancer. Immunohistochemical expression for β-catenin, p27 and COX-2, was assessed and scored. Findings were correlated with relevant demographic, pathologic and clinical data. Data Management and analysis: Data were recorded using a data sheet and then entered into an MS Excel spreadsheet. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 15.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago) and STATA version 10.0 (Stata Inc,Texas). Chi square test (or Fisher’s exact test when number was <5) was performed to determine the association between categorical variables. Results:β-catenin aberrant expression was found in 75% of tumours. 93% of cases showed moderate to strong nuclear p27 expression and 78% of cases demonstrated moderate to strong COX-2 overexpression. β-catenin expression patterns were associated with tumour location, and COX-2 overexpression with tumour histological subtype. Conclusion: The aberrant expression of β-catenin corresponds with the overexpression of COX-2, supporting their postulated relationship in the Chromosomal instability pathway. The Wnt/APC pathway still appears to be the most common pathway, despite our younger population. The utility of p27 still requires further evaluation and validation, due to conflicting results.
