The industrial wastewater is the leading source of water pollution due to diverse nature of pollutants present in the effluents. The goal of this work was to establish methods for the treatment of petroleum refinery, soap & detergent and pulp & paper effluents as well as simulated solution of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) using gamma and UV radiation in the presence of H 2 O 2 and TiO 2 . The degradation of pollutants was monitored through UV/Vis, FTIR, GC-MS and HPLC techniques. The efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was evaluated on the basis of extant of degradation, water quality parameters and detoxification. The toxicities were determined through various bioassays such as allium cepa, haemolytic, shrimp and Ames tests. The independent variables such as radiation dose, catalysts concentration, exposure time, pH, temperature etc. were optimized using response surface methodology for maximum degradation of pollutant. Through advanced characterization techniques, it was found that the AOPs were able to oxidize recalcitrant, toxic and non-biodegradable compounds to various intermediates and eventually to inert end products by generating intermediacy hydroxyl radicals. The gamma ray/H 2 O 2 treatment degrade the toxic residues, improve water quality and reduce the toxicity significantly, however, UV/TiO 2 /H 2 O 2 furnished better response. From the results, it is concluded that the AOPs (UV/TiO 2 /H 2 O 2 and gamma ray/H 2 O 2 ) could be successfully used for the treatment of petroleum refinery, soap & detergent and pulp & paper effluents as well as NPEOs since the water quality fall within the permissible limits recommended by the environmental agencies.

Conclusion

Having studied the Qur’ānic Vision of Dr. Isrār Aḥmad, the writer has arrived at a conclusion that his durūs-e-Qur’ān, as well as the brief yet comprehensive genesis Bayan al-Qur’ān, should not only be made accessible to all higher educational institutions but there is a dire need that all the Religious Leaders of mosques be motivated towards it. Dr Isrār Aḥmad’s struggle clearly reveals that a person even one not qualified in Dars-e-Niẓāmī can easily disseminate the message of the Qur’ān to humankind in an amicable manner. To do that, the requirement is that the community with modern education following his steps must first understand the Qur’ān and then transfer it to others.

However, it is quite difficult to agree with the Concept of Manhaj Inqalāb-e-Nabavī as described by Dr. Isrār Ahmad. If the methodology of Revolution as stated by him is adopted, it would culminate into nothing but bloodshed. In this document, all the weaknesses of his methodology have been highlighted. All religious parties, therefore, should follow the constitutional and legal ways and refrain from underground activities. As far as public durūs-e-Qur’ān are concerned, undoubtedly, Dr. Isrār Ahmad and his students have played a key role in uplifting the Qur’ānic Vision. However, it remains a bitter fact that under the cover of durūs-e-Qur’ān, some persons with little education have caused misunderstandings among the people. It is therefore required that such people delivering dars-e-Qur’ān must acquire basic religious knowledge and understanding of the Arabic Language to protect the general public from falling prey to misapprehensions and communal clashes.

Dr. Isrār Aḥmad advocated the concept of a “Universal Caliphate” (‘Ālmī Khilāfah) but the writer has proved with the reasoning that the establishment of such a “Universal Caliphate” is beyond any possibility. The Muslims on the other...

Teaching Methodologies for Islamic Studies in Nigerian Universities: Strategies, Evaluation and Way Forward.

Islamic Studies as a discipline in Nigerian Universities was introduced to provide training and the dissemination and promotion of Knowledge of Islam in particular and Islamic culture in general. The discipline is designed to pursue the development of Muslims through inculcation of Islamic values, norms and principles, without which the goal of ideological, moral, intellectual and economic development of any Muslim Nation may not be achieved. The programme seeks to make students appreciate the Qur’an and Hadith of the Prophet (S.A.W) as the two fountain heads on which Islam is based. The curriculum is structured to produce qualified intellectuals, professionals and scholars by integrating the articles of faith (Iman), qualities of knowledge, (Ilm) and good character (Akhlaq) to serve as agents of comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development. It focuses on developing practical solutions through research on contemporary problems of Nigerian Muslim society in particular and the Muslim world in general. This paper is going to discuss on the teaching methodologies for Islamic studies in the Nigerian Universities. A suitable teaching method is very important in helping to achieve desired objectives and behavioral outcome expected on the learners. The research Methodology to be adopted in conducting this research is analytical methods by studying facts and information on research methodologies used for teaching Islamic studies in Nigerian Universities and analyses them to make a critical evaluation.

Indo-Us Strategic Partnership Impact on Regional Security Paradigm

Post-Cold War regional security order in Asia is in flux. Growing political, economic and military power of China and India are pressuring existing alliances and power configuration in the region. The dilemma is accentuated by the US attempts to sustain its global leadership role in general, and its influence in the Asian region in particular. India is now recognized as a nascent major power and a ‘natural partner’ of the US, one that many analysts view as a potential counterweight to China’s growing power. Washington and New Delhi have, since 2004, been pursuing a ‘strategic partnership’ based on apparently converging geo-political interests. Numerous economic, security and global initiatives including the plan for ‘full civilian nuclear energy cooperation,’ are underway. Also in 2005, the US and India signed a ten-year defense framework agreement that calls for expanding bilateral security cooperation. Of late, this agreement has been renewed. Given India’s geo-strategic importance and rising political and military clout, these initiatives have the potential to transform India into a major world power. In the wake of China’s growing power and rise as potential challenger to the US primacy in the region, a stronger Indo-US strategic partnership is consequential for security and politics of the region and the world at large. The ongoing power shift from the West to East vis-à-vis contending states’ attempts to assert their influence would have far reaching impact on the regional security order. Therefore, this study examines the dynamics of Indo-US strategic partnership vis-à-vis great power politics and assesses the future security structure of the region. The study also endeavors to develop an understanding on the evolving regional security framework and attempts to explore the nature of Indo-US strategic partnership. In this backdrop, the study also focuses on China’s rise as potential challenger to the US primacy and the US efforts to reinforce existing alliances and build new partnerships with regional countries, which many analysts see as an attempt to manage China’s growing power.
