This study quantifies and analyzes the Unexplored Export Potential (UEP) of Surgical Goods of Pakistan (SGP) to 42 selected countries that are leading export markets for these goods. The quantification of UEP of SGP is expected to help the concerned Pakistani exporters for setting right their export priorities towards selected export markets. The study differentiates the selected export markets on the basis of presence and absence of UEP of SGP. Thus, to serve the purpose and make the analysis more meaningful, out of total 42 selected export markets, top 9 markets have been classified as “TOP-9 Importers of SGP”. The remaining 33 markets have been classified with regard to their membership of different regional groups that are; ASEAN, EU, GCC, ECO, and SAARC. Current study is a disaggregate level research. It utilizes disaggregated level data of the surgical goods‟ industry of Pakistan. In fact, international trade literature is relatively limited for such disaggregate level researches, which is because of the reason that required data to accomplish such researches are found on discontinuous basis. The discontinuous availability of required data leads to missing values‟ problem, which refrains the accomplishment of such researches. Current study solves the missing values‟ problem by using Tobit model. Moreover, this study utilizes augmented Gravity Model of Trade for the used panel data (1990-2010) and ensures the statistical adequacy of the estimated parameters by applying unit root and co-integration tests. The results obtained through Augmented Dickey-Fuller test indicate that for each selected country at least two of the data series are unit root. Thus, for validation of regression results, Engel-Granger two-step co-integration test has been applied, which confirms the long run relationship between dependent and all the independent variables, in all 42 countries‟ cases. xii Moreover, UEP is usually quantified either by using the out-of-sample projection approach or the in-sample projection approach. However, researchers believe that both these approaches are inefficient in serving the purpose of quantification of UEP. Thus, current study employs Empirical Bayes (EB) method for the quantification of UEP of SGP. The EB methodology is especially useful for panel data that are with short time series dimension, as is the case in current study. The application of EB method for quantification of UEP of SGP is a pioneering attempt. Estimation results show that signs of all parameters are in line with the economic theory. Moreover, the results indicate that the export potential for surgical goods exists in Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia in ASEAN, only Thailand is over-traded in this group. The potential prevails in all selected countries of EU, only Czech Republic is over-traded; it exists in all selected countries of GCC. The potential is absent in case of Turkey, which is the sole selected member from ECO; it does not exist in all the selected countries of SAARC. Lastly, the export potential exists only in case of Italy in TOP-9 Importers of SGP, the remaining 8 members of this group are over-traded. In the light of empirical findings of this study, the exporters of SGP and concerned policy makers at government level could better set their priorities regarding export of SGP to selected export markets.

Al-Ūdwī’s Theory of Iʿjāz Al-Qurʾān

Maulānā Muḥammad Ismāʿīl al-Ūdwī al-Shikārpurī (1897-1970) was one of the very prominent scholarly personalities of Pakistan. His life and works are studied and analyzed in detail elsewhere. (See. IRJAH, Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Vol. 42, 2014 and Ma’arif Research Journal, Islamic Research Academy, Karachi, issue. 13, 2017). This paper mainly deals with al-Ūdwī’s theory of iʿjāz al-Qurʾān. With regard to the theory of iʿjāz al-Qurʾān, classical scholars including al-Rummani, al-Khaṭṭābī, al-Baqillani, al-Rāzī significantly emphasize the linguistic nature of iʿjāz as an argument to support the doctrine of iʿjāz al-Qurʾān. Al-Ūdwī on the other hand, after accepting the linguistic iʿjāz of the Qurʾān, proceeds to go further than his predecessors in supporting the doctrine of iʿjāz al-Qurʾān by emphasizing and situating iʿjāz in the content of the Qurʾān. Therefore, his book Nūr al-Īqān bi iʿjāz al-Qurʾān seems to be considerably different in its arguments from his predecessors’ theory. There is no exaggeration to say that al-Ūdwī has distinctly added several new arguments in his book, which, according to him, provide the certainty in the doctrine of iʿjāz, as he names his book as Nūr al-Īqān bi Iʿjāz al-Qurʾān, ‘Light of the faith through the inimitability of the Qurʾān.

Exploring Early Years Teachers Classroom Practices in Two Private Schools in Karachi: Learning from Eced: Certificate in Education Programme, Aku-Ied

Early Childhood Education has been considered as a fundamental pillar for lifelong learning. In this regard, the teachers of early years need to play a significant role in the teaching and learning process at the classroom level. The study aimed to explore the question, "How do two early years teachers implement their learning, acquired from the Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) Certificate in Education (Cert. Ed.), Programme 2006-2007, at the Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), Karachi. The study was qualitative in nature. Purposive sampling method was used under the qualitative case study approach where only the trained AKU-IED, ECD teachers were selected from two private schools in Karachi. The two ECD (Class I, II) teachers' perception, their conceptual understanding regarding different aspects of teaching in the early years, their classroom practices, the factors that facilitated them in the implementation of their learning and challenges they faced while translating their learning into classroom practices were explored. The data was generated through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, informal talks or chats, and document analysis. The study is significant at both personal and professional level. It has strengthened and deepened my understanding about child development, how children learn, the role of the teacher and the environment specific to early childhood classrooms. Moreover, it has attributed to the literature about early childhood education especially, in the developing world context. Furthermore, it has also informed ECED faculty at AKU-IED about the implementation of ECED programmes in the real school context. The findings of this study will hopefully make a contribution in designing further training programmes for ECED facilitators at AKUIED. Besides the findings will be particularly helpful in those schools, where the study was conducted. It will provide the two teachers an opportunity to reflect on their own classroom teaching practices, improve and undertake different initiatives in early year's education. The findings suggest that a change has occurred in the teachers believes and perceptions regarding the teaching learning practices in the early years. They have adapted their learning by contextualizing it in their classroom and made a shift from the previous traditional approaches of teaching towards the usage of more innovative ways of teaching. As a consequence, they look at them in a more effective role as early years teachers. They are translating their learning acquired from the programme including active learning, integrated teaching and the usage of different teaching strategies in
