Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are consumed as staple food by billions across the globe. Both crops are grown in multiple cropping systems but rice-wheat cropping system (RWCS) is the most prominent one in south Asia including Pakistan. However, the productivity of this system is threatened due to increasing labor, water and energy crises in the region, and the negative impact of soil management interventions on soil and aerial environments. In this scenario, conservation RWCSs offers an ecofriendly option to reduce water, labour, and energy input, and improve soil health. We conducted a series of experiments. In experiment I, conducted at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, the impact of sesbania brown manuring (SBM) in direct seeded aerobic rice (DSAR), and rice residue mulch (RM) in zero tilled wheat (ZTW) on weed dynamics, soil health and system productivity was evaluated. The experiment was comprised of five RWCSs viz. (i) DSAR-ZTW, (ii) DSAR+SBM-ZTW, (iii) DSAR-ZTW+ RM, (iv) puddled transplanted flooded rice (PudTR)-ZTW, and (v) PudTR- plough tilled wheat (PTW). The SBM in DSAR reduced the density and dry weight of weeds by 41-56 and 62-75%, respectively than sole crop of DSAR. At rice harvest, minimum soil bulk density, highest total nitrogen (N), soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) were recorded with DSAR+SBM-ZTW, which eventually improved the grain yield, water productivity and profitability of DSAR in this RWCS. Rice residue mulch retention in ZTW reduced the density and dry biomass of weeds by 60 and 69%, respectively than ZTW with no residue mulch. At wheat harvest, highest total N, SOC, and SMBC were recorded with DSAR-ZTW+RM, followed by DSAR+SBM-ZTW, which eventually led toward better wheat grain yield and profitability and improved system productivity in these RWCSs. In experiment II, conducted at same site, potential role of seed priming in improving the stand establishment, grain yield, water productivity and profitability of wheat grown in various RWCSs was evaluated. For seed priming, wheat seeds were soaked in aerated water (hydropriming) or solution of calcium chloride (ψs -1.25 MPa; osmopriming) for 12 h; non-primed seeds were used as control. After harvest of DSAR and PudTR crop, primed and non-primed wheat seeds were sown following zero tillage (ZT) and plough tillage (PT). In both years, stand establishment of ZTW after DSAR and PudTR was impeded; nonetheless, seed priming improved the stand establishment which was visible through earliness and better uniformity of seedling emergence. Improved stand establishment enhanced growth, grain yield, water productivity and profitability of wheat in ZT systems. In this regard, osmopriming was the most effective. The third experiment was conducted for 2-years at two experimental sites (Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura). During both years, rice was grown both as DSAR and PudTR; followed by PTW and ZTW after each rice production system at both sites. Overall, higher total N, SOC, SMBC, and SMBN were recorded in DSAR than PudTR, and DSAR yielded similar as the PudTR. However, net benefits and water productivity was the highest with DSAR than PudTR. In wheat season, the highest total N, SOC, SMBC, and SMBN were recorded for DSAR-ZTW, which eventually enhanced the grain yield, water productivity and profitability in this RWCS. In experiment IV, the impact of no tillage (NT) and PT, with or without wheat residue mulch on soil properties and greenhouse gases emission was evaluated. This experiment was started 27 year ago on a Crosby silt loam soil at Waterman Farm, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. Mulching reduced soil bulk density and improved total soil porosity. More total carbon, SOC and SMBC were recorded in soil under NT than PT. Mulching increased total C, SOC and SMBC by 18, 72 and 8%, respectively than un-mulched control. Seasonal fluxes of greenhouse gases were lowest under NT than PT; however, mulching enhanced nitrous oxide emission. In experiment V, we interviewed the farmers from four districts (Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, and Sialkot) to know their perceptions, and problems about the conventional and conservation RWCS. Majority of the farmers were facing the problems of water and labor shortage. Most of the farmers were afraid of adopting the DSAR due to fear of weeds, while many of them were not adopting DSAR due to lack of know how about this technology. Majority of the farmers reported that they have no access to ZTW drill due to which they are not adopting it. In crux, weed management in DSAR through SBM followed by wheat planting with ZT using primed seeds may be opted to improve the productivity, profitability, soil health, and to reduce the greenhouse gases emission from RWCS. Provision of conservation machinery for rice and wheat planation at affordable rates, aided by on farm demonstration of weed management practices developed for DSAR and ZTW, through participatory research may help to improve the uptake of DSAR and ZTW. Long term NT reduced the greenhouse gases emission by improving soil properties. However, mulching increased the greenhouse gases emission.

غزل اْردو شاعری میں روح کی مانند ہے۔ یہ دراصل قصیدے کا ابتدائی حصہ تشبیب ہے جوعموماًعشق ومحبت کے مضامین پر مشتمل ہوتا ہے۔ ایک الگ صنف سخن کے طور پر ایرانی شعرا نے اس کورواج دیاعربی زبان میں غزل نام کوئی شعرِ صنف موجود نہیں ہے۔شمس رازیؔ نے غزل کی تعریف کچھ اس طرح کی کہ ہرن کو جب شکاری کتے دبوچھ لیتے ہیں اور بے بسی کی حالت میں اس کے منہ سے جو کرب ناک چیخ نکلتی ہے وہ غزل ہے۔معلمین ادب نے اب تک غزل کی جو تعریفیں کی ہیں ان میں سب سے مقبول تعریف یہ ہے کہ’’ عورتوں سے باتیں کرنا ،عورتوں کے متعلق باتیں کر نا ،عورتوں سے عشق بازی کرنا‘‘۔عربی زبان میں غزل سے مراد ’’کاتنا‘‘ لیا جاتا ہے۔عرب میں نوجوان لڑکیاں گھر کی مصروفیت سے جب فارغ ہوجاتی سوت کاتتی تھی اور جوگیت گھاتی اس کو غزل سے معنون کیا جاتا تھا۔شاعری کی اصطلاح میں غزل وہ شعری صنف ہے جس کے ہر شعر میں الگ مضمون باندھا گیا ہوجامعیت اور اختصار غزل کے ہر شعر کا خاصہ ہوتا ہے غزل کا ہر شعر اپنے مفہوم کے لحاظ سے سالم ہوتا ہے۔عشق و عاشقی کے مضامین غزل کے بنیادی عناصر سمجھے جاتے ہیں۔ڈاکٹر محمد عبدالحفیظ قتیلؔ نے اس حوالے سے کچھ یوں اظہار خیال کیا ہے:

A Study of Stress Factors and Their Impact on Students’ Academic Performance at University Level

The main emphasis of the study is on the academic performance and the stress management in applied science among the students of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Sindh University Campus Dadu. What is the level of stress on the academic success of the students? How does it affect their lifestyle and health? This is what the research study covers to counteract the general stress among the students. The purpose of the study is to inquire and bring light to measure and check the present stress among students of the university. While doing the research a quantitative method was applied for collecting and analyzing the data. The Questionnaires were distributed among different students for this purpose. Innumerable factors of stress were found in the results and the factors were grouped in four categories which are; -Environmental Factors, Academic Factors, and Personal Factors. In environmental factors, the stress was about the happening the fate in the future. The students were found worried about future that what would happen about their fate? How it will happen? What is about to happen? When they came into contact with the new people it raised their stress. Also the class workload was the main reason for the stress among the students regarding academic factors. When the students were experiencing the workload of the class the group of the students came under stress. The last factor was a personal factor which was mainly due to the financial problem among the students. The stress of all categories can be managed through stress management courses and doing different extracurricular activities which will help to divert the attention of the students on different occasions. This study has drawn significant conclusions and Suggests further measures for practitioners which could help other to manage stress. The limitations are also mentioned so that those who are conducting research for the similar cases can extract better results and ways of curbing stress. A survey questionnaire was designed to collect the response from students, the five-point Likert scale was used from strongly agree to strongly disagree. SPSS-21 version was used to interpret the results through different quantitative techniques like descriptive, regression, and correlation. ____________

Biology and Molecular Biology of Major Viruses Infecting Potato Crop in Northern Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

The hilly area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province is a leading potato seed producing region of Pakistan. Field symptoms and laboratory analysis revealed that Potato Leaf Roll Virus, Potato Virus Y (PVY) and Potato mop virus (PMTV) were the major viral diseases of potato in the areas surveyed. On the basis of characteristic symptoms the average incidence of PLRV ranged from 3.89 - 46.66 % with maximum incidence in Kalam North (46.66 %) at Ushu (56.66%) and minimum incidence in Miandam (3.89 %) at Seney locality (3.33%). The incidence of PVY ranged from 67.04% (Shangla) to 78.95% (Swat). The infestation of aphid ranged from 2.21 (Kalam East, Swat) to 5.50 (Pir Khana, Shangla) in summer crop while in spring crop it is ranged from 7.00 (Abbotabad) to 10.66 (Mansehra). The incidence of PMTV ranged from 2.44 - 9.07% with maximum incidence in district Swat and minimum incidence in district Shangla. The incidence of PMTV in tubers showing spraing symptoms are ranged from 7.33 - 4.99% with maximum incidence in district Swat and minimum incidence in district Abbotabad. Symptomatologcal studies also showed that mostly necrosis for PVY, and leaf rolling and yellowing of leaflets for PLRV and no exact symptoms in case of PMTV and TRV were appeared in the fields surveyed. The ELISA results revealed that average incidence of PLRV was ranged from 8.66 - 44.33 % and PVY ranged from 67.04 - 78.95 %. The average incidence of PMTV ranged from 2.44 - 9.07% and it is ranged from 7.33 - 24.99% in tubers showing spraing symptoms. The ELISA test in case of TRV was negative and showed zero incidences. Serological results were confirmed on the basis of molecular properties during six month exposure visit to USA funded by HEC, Islamabad, Pakistan where the molecular detection and characterization was carried out in the Department of Plant Pathology (Washington State University, Pullman) under the Supervision of Prof. Dr. Hanu R. Pappu and his team. RNA was extracted from ELISA positive samples and C DNA was synthesized and was used as a template in RT-PCR amplification. In aphid borne viruses only PVY was detected and its CP gene of 801bp was amplified using CP gene specific primers. Plasmid DNA having CP gene was isolated, purified and sequenced by ELIM Biopharmaceutical, Inc. 25495 Whitesell St, Hayward, CA 94545, USA after successful cloning, transformation and confirmation by colony PCR. All samples (two from each zone) of plasmid DNA having CP gene of PVY showed similar sequence. The nucleotide sequence of 801bp on translation resulted in 267 amino acids and sequence analysis showed high variability of the Pakistani isolates with isolates reported from other countries. Nucleotide identity of 99% was observed with Poland N-W, Germanyw, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Cuba and amino acid identity level of 100% was observed with isolates reported from Poland, Saudi Arabia, India and Pakistan. Phylogenetic analysis revealed Pakistani isolate clustered with India, Pakistan, Poland and Saudi Arabia isolates. Similar process was performed for soil borne viruses and only PMTV was detected and amplified using PMTV- CP gene specific primers. The expected size (~ 553bp) of the PCR product was achieved in all samples tested. Plasmid DNA having CP gene was isolated and sequenced. All the samples two from each zone of plasmid DNA having CP gene of PMTV showed same sequence similarly as in PVY. Sequence analysis revealed that coat protein region of 540 bp has 176 deduced amino acids. Nucleotide identity of 99% was shown by Pakistani PMTV Isolate with Canada and USA isolates. The amino acids level was as high 99% when compared with rest of the isolates except few isolates reported from other countries which showed no significant similarity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Pakistani isolate clustered with Canada and USA isolates. Regarding the screening of varieties the PVY showed the maximum disease severity in Racco (80.33%) and minimum in Raja (41.13%. PLRV showed maximum disease severity in Paramont (69.50%) and minimum in Desiree (41.80%). No typical symptoms was appeared in case of PMTV infection, therefore, data were recorded on powdery scab disease and the maximum disease severity was recorded in Diamont (70.00%) with minimum in Karuda (11.11%) and these results were confirmed through DAS-ELISA
