Premise of the research-Selenium (Se) has become an element of interest to many biologists because of its physiological and toxicological importance. The identification of effective Se dose and application method is crucial for better understanding of Se role in crop plants under drought stress. The present study, therefore, was planned to evaluate the response of water-stressed wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to exogenous Se supply. The study was carried out at the Department of Crop Physiology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad-Pakistan and Stress Physiology Laboratory, Salinity and Environmental Division, Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB), Faisalabad-Pakistan. Methodology-A series of laboratory, wire / greenhouse, lysimeter and field experiments were conducted for this study. In laboratory experiments, fifteen local wheat genotypes were screened out for their response to PEG-6000 induced water stress of -0.5 MPa at germination and seedling stage. Wire / greenhouse experiments were conducted using one drought tolerant (Kohistan-97) and one sensitive (Pasban-90) genotype, selected from laboratory experiments, to determine appropriate rates for three methods viz. seed priming (75 μM), fertigation (7.35 μM) and foliar spray (7.06 μM) of Se helpful in improving drought tolerance in wheat plants subjected to water stress at seedling stage. The optimum rates determined in screen house experiments of each method of Se application were tested for appropriate method and application time (vegetative or reproductive growth stage) in lysimeter and field experiments. Pivotal results-Drought stress significantly reduced growth, water relations, gas exchange and yield attributes of both wheat genotypes. However, exogenous Se supply was observed to be helpful in improving the drought tolerance potential and yield through maintenance of turgor, increased accumulation of osmolytes and enhancement in enzymatic activity of water- stressed wheat plants. The supplemental Se supply significantly improved Se and potassium (K) concentration in shoot and grain, whereas phosphorous (P), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca) contents in shoot were reduced by Se supply. The grain Mg and Fe concentration increased while grain P concentration reduced by exogenous Se supply. Non-significant effect of Se supply was recorded on grain Zn concentration. Conclusion- The cultivation of drought tolerant wheat genotypes is essential to obtain economical crop yield under water stress conditions as wheat genotype Kohistan-97 (drought tolerant) was more successful in the maintenance of physiological, biochemical and yield attributes than Pasban-90 (drought sensitive). Selenium application through fertigation @ 7.35 μM and foliar spray @ 7.06 μM at tillering stage was found effective under both normal and water deficit conditions.

ہم لوگ اڈیالہ جیل راولپنڈی میںتھے جیل کی گنتی بند ہو چکی تھی کہ اچانک جیل کے اندر عام قیدیوں کے نعروں کی آواز گو نجنے لگی ۔میں جیل کی ڈیوٹی پر موجود سپاہی سے پوچھا کہ کیا ہوا ہے ۔ اس نے کہا اڑتی اڑتی خبر آئی ہے کہ جنرل ضیاء الحق کا جہاز کریش ہو گیا ہے پاکستانی خبریں تو ہم کم ہی سنتے تھے اس دن ریڈیو لگایا تو جنرل ضیاء الحق کے مرنے کی خبر تھی ۔کانوںکو یقین نہیں آ رہا تھا ۔ مجھے اپنی ماںیاد آ گئی جب میری سزائے موت عمر قید میں تبدیل ہو ئی تو وہ مٹھائی لے کر آئیں میںنے کہا مجھے 25سال سزا ہو ئی ہے وہ بولیں کہ زندگی بچ گئی اب مجھے پتہ ہے کہ جب تک جنرل ضیاہے تم جیل میں ہو ۔ہزاروں مائوں کی سنی گئی ۔دسمبر 88میں محترمہ بے نظیر بھٹو شہید کی حکومت بننے کے بعد پاکستان بھر کی جیلوں میں موجود ہزاروں سیاسی قیدی رہا ہوئے وگرنہ میری رہائی مارچ 2009ء میں 25سال بعد ہو نی تھی ۔

 

Should teens be allowed to consent for vaccines?

Teens and children will need to be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19. Most parents are eager to have their teens immunized, whereas some are hesitant. Should teens be allowed to consent to immunization even if their parents’ objects? Vaccines are safe and effective, medically recommended, and good for both the individual and the community. Inspite of these powerful arguments, the law lags behind. Most parents want their teens to be immunized. Most vaccine-hesitant parents ultimately agree to vaccination. Furthermore, teens who get COVID generally have mild cases. For now, the law in most states does not permit teens to consent to the COVID-19 vaccine without parental permission.

A Critical and Sociological study of the literary style of Abdullah ibn al-Muqaffa with Focus on his Literary School: Natural expression. Due to scarcity of sufficient references and material on the subject of my thesis, I was obliged to follow methods of induction and survey of literature or obtaining and extracting necessary material and data. My research is ristricted to the following points. 1- Life of Abdullah Ibn Muqaffa with focus on his early environment and schooling under the care of his Magian parents and then his journey to Baghdad to enhance his exposure to a broader and deeper know-how of Arabic/Islamic Sciences and literature and then his literary and political life plus his reformative movement having led to his untimely death. All this followed by a critical discussion of his literary works and then critical evaluation of his thoughts and political wisdom with special focus on his theoretical philosophy and practical wisdom as extracted from his writings along with description of the salient features and traits whereby his literary works and thoughts are distinguished from his contemporaries and his predecessors all this followed by critical evaluation of different writers and critics' opinions/views about his life, writings and thoughts taking a different stand and at the same time synthesising different views in this connection. During working on my dissertation I followed methods of: 1- Induction 2- Survey of literature 3- Acquaintance and Description 4- Historical criticism All these are based on colligation of data and facts with observation of precision, penetration, necessary briefness and avoiding unnecessary and redundant details.
