Time-aligned and labeled speech at sub-word level is required to develop spoken language technology components. Determining time boundaries of sub word units of speech and labelling those, is the speech segmentation problem. Manual human-labeling is considered to be the most accurate, which however requires significant amount of time when large amount of speech has to be dealt. The evidences which humans employ are based on knowledge of acoustic-phonetics and at very basic level works on spectrograms based techniques. Based on a hypothesis that computers can also segment speech automatically if evidence which human experts utilizes are used, leads us towards time effective automatic speech segmentation. In this thesis unsupervised automatic time-alignment of speech at sub-word level is carried out based on the pieces of information which spectrograms carry. The speech spectrogram engineered in this thesis does not possess information of vocal excitations and capture dynamics of vocal tract only. The novel feature is found suitable for segmentation problem and utilizes both forward and inverse characteristics of vocal tract (FICV). Additionally to evaluate the suitability of a feature extraction technique for speech segmentation task, a framework has also been developed. In the thesis, speech segmentation is carried out on indigenously developed Classical Arabic (CA) dataset and therefore becomes first scheme of its kind for CA which is an under resourced language in speech technology. The performance of FICV based speech segmentation scheme is compared and shown to be significantly better than standard unsupervised and supervised techniques both in terms of error-rates and alignment accuracies. Reduction of 12.29% in error rates is achieved with FICV based feature when compared with standard unsupervised technique. Carrying out supervised segmentation requires a basic sub-word level recognizer, which labels and aligns speech. In this connection a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based speech recognizer is trained. The acoustic modeling is carried using a discriminative technique which shows better recognition accuracies of up to 4% than the non-discriminative technique. Thesis also verifies that using manually-labeled data for training acoustic models can further improve recognition accuracies by 3-4%. In this regard, thesis carries details of experimental steps which can also serve as guideline for developing an automatic speech recognizer for CA.

Physical activity in prevention of cancer and better prognosis

Cancer is a multifactorial disease with genetic and environmental risk factors. Environmental factors may also be termed as modifiable risk factors and these contribute towards 35% of cancer related mortalities as reported by World Health Organization. Obesity is the leading risk factor in this regard, causing not only deaths due to cancer but also to many other diseases. Among different factors causing obesity, a major contributor is lack of physical activity. In this era of modern technology and digitalization, sedentary mode of life has become a part of life and is mostly unavoidable. At the same time, there is a rise in the incidence of cancer. In the olden times, people used to do all manual work, a lot of walk, exercise and had healthy life style. Such healthy life style may have prevented them from various diseases.             Physical activity as a therapy on daily basis, is associated with a reduction in incidence of various carcinomas. It may improve overall wellbeing of healthy people as well as diseases persons from various ailments. As it is a common proverb that, “prevention is better than cure”, physical activity serves as a preventive measure for various diseases and also for fitness of normal healthy people. Although it is a known fact, yet planned population studies are required to provide evidence. Instead of unorganized physical activities, a structured physical activity may help in improvement of condition of cancer patients, prevention of cancer, cancer related deaths as well we quality of life. Healthcare providers should guide the patients in this regard.             There is lack of awareness among physicians and mostly they don’t refer them to physical therapists. There is also lack of information regarding the implementation of the programs and regimens of physical exercises for different diseases and cancers. Physical therapists may guide the patients in terms of frequency, intensity, duration of exercises which may serve as a betterment of their condition.

Isolation, Prevalence and Characterization of Eimeria Oocysts

Poultry industry is facing many challenges one of them is coccidiosis. Seven species of Eimeria are responsible for coccidiosis. These are protozoan parasites in chickens and other animals. A survey was carried out in district Mianwali between July 2017 to July 2018 with the objectives of isolation, prevalence and characterization of Eimeria oocysts. There was no published data related to coccidiosis in this area. For this survey 600 faecal samples were collected. Centrifugal floatation method was used for the examination of faecal samples. Overall prevalence was 32.3%. Young chickens showed more percentage of prevalence as compared to adult ones among the 3 tehsils of districtMianwali. Broiler breed showed more percentage of prevalence as compared to Desi breed. Chicks reared under the intensive management system showed more percentage of prevalence as compared to extensive one. Chicks with poor body condition showed more prevalence of coccidiosis as compared to good body condition. Prevalence of Eimeria species across the district Mianwali were following,in tehsil Mianwali E. tenella 40.44%, E. acervulina 26.96%, E. maxima 20.22, E. necatrix 12.35%. In the tehsil Isakhel prevalence was E. tenella 0. 484%, E. acervulina 0.29%, E. maxima 0.194%, E. necatrix 0.032%. In the tehsil Piplan E. tenella 31.08%,E. acervulina 10.81%, E. maxima 39.18%, %, E. necatrix 18.19%. In age group prevalence was varied amongdistrict Mianwali. It is concluded for control and preventive administration risk factors should be take into account. Coccidiosis can be controlled by using proper medication, avoid from overcrowding and proper sanitary conditions.
