The emergence of the Social Web and social collaborative cataloging web applications have changed the way books are described, discovered and accessed. These applications present books not only through the bibliographic descriptions or professional metadata but also allow users to describe these resources through user-generated content or social metadata. This social practice has attracted researchers under the broader topic of Social Book Search to make it part of the book retrieval process aiming to improve the relevance of search results and understand the impact of the Social Web on the search performance. For this purpose, the classical Information Retrieval (IR) approaches are employed to produce an initial set of search results, which are re-ranked using the social metadata to see if the search relevance gets improved. Although numerous studies found that the social metadata improves over the baseline run, they are unable to exploit fully the potential role of the query-document representation and weighting model, which questions the credibility of such a conclusion. Also, in re-ranking, most of the studies evaluated and compared different metadata features to produce better search results but remained silent about the final shape of re-ranking. To fill these gaps in the literature, this research work considers the contribution of the querydocument representation and weighting model to the fullest to produce a strong classical baseline run and re-ranks it using a multifeatured fusion of different social metadata features. Our best-performing baseline and re-ranking runs outperform the existing approaches on several topics sets and relevance judgments. The findings suggest that the best document representation can be achieved if the social metadata is made part of the search index. The best query representation is achieved using all-topic-fields. The relevance of search results improves with re-ranking the best-performing baseline runs. These findings have implications for researchers working in Libraries, Information Science, IR, and Interactive IR.

Understanding the anti-Mughal Struggle of Khushal Khan Khattak

Khushal Khan Khattak, a seventeenth century Pakhtun writer, poet and swordsman, and his forefathers had served the Mughal for a long time. However, his fortune took a sudden twist when Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb imprisoned him in 1664, and kept him in solitary confinement at Ranthambore fort. After his release from prison, Khushal Khan was a different person. He remained no more a loyal Mughal official afterwards. Although, Aurangzeb Alamgir and a number of Mughal governors of Kabul tempted him several time to accept a position in the frontier areas but he out-rightly declined. This transformation is clearly visible in his poetry. He took up arms against the Mughals in 1673 and declared a war against them despite the fact that some of his family members even his son had sided with the Mughals. He continued his anti-Mughal struggle till his death in 1689. Some of the critics look at the antiMughal role of Khushal Khan with suspicion and have raised a few queries in this connection. This study looks into the circumstances that saw transformation in his outlook towards the Mughals. Then it explores, whether it was a personal vendetta or the start of a collective anti-Mughal Pakhtun struggle. The article looks into various dimensions, nature and direction of his struggle. This research paper is an attempt to evaluate objectively as to why and how Khushal Khan joined the anti-Mughal camp in the borderland area. Some more related questions are also discussed in details in this article.

Cad: Comprehensive Database of Alkaloids

Alkaloids are most important natural secondary metabolites with a wide range of structural diversity. More than 12,000 alkaloids have been reported from different plant genera. Plant alkaloids are cheap in terms of cost and have fewer side effects as compared to other alkaloid sources. Different structural databases are available containing thousands of alkaloids from different sub-categories lacking the information about ADMET, 2D and 3D properties, bioactivities, interaction with genes, pathway and diseases in which it is involved and cross references in a single platform. CAD is aimed to provide a single useful online and downloadable platform to fulfill this gap and help researchers to get information in a time efficient manner. Briefly, methods used to implement CAD was 1) searching plants of sub-continent India, 2) Searching for alkaloids contained in these plants, 3) Finding structural properties from publically available databases and journals, 4) Prediction of ADMET properties, 5) Making of different structural formats using MOE software, 6) Prediction of 2D and 3D properties and development ofReady to Dock Library using MOE software 7) searching for associated gene interaction, disease and pathway data, 8) storing data in RDBMS 9) retrieving information using PHP. The resulted database can be searched with alkaloid, gene, disease and pathway name by simple typing the corresponding name or by selecting from dropdown menu. After successful implementation of CAD, it was concluded that CAD could fulfill its desired aims with unique organized information of alkaloids. In future CAD will include more plants and their alkaloids from different countries and more scientifically useful aspects.
