Every software development process either generates or uses measurement data that is essential to understand, evaluate, improve and predict the software processes, products, and resources. Software development organizations implement measurement programs (MPs) as part of their measurement processes. However, implementing successful MPs still remains a challenge. The aim of this thesis is to comprehensively evaluate and then contribute towards planning and implementation issues of MPs. This research is conducted in three phases: 1) problem identification 2) solution design and 3) industrial evaluation of solutions. A mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods is used appropriately for each phase. In the first phase, comprehensive literature reviews of the studies on MPs are conducted to enable a better understanding of the existing measurement planning models, tools, challenges, success factors, and metrics selection methods of implementing MPs in general and specifically for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In addition, challenges of implementing MPs in large organizations and SMEs are analyzed. In the second phase, multiple solutions are proposed to improve the planning of MPs. The solutions are based on the analysis of research gaps involving the challenges and success factors of implementing MPs. First, a set of key components of MPs is identified for planning a MP. Second, a model of success factors for planning MPs in general is proposed. Third, a model of success factors for planning MPs specifically in SMEs is proposed. Fourth, a model called data-driven measurement for software prediction (D2MSP) is proposed to overcome the challenge of using already collected measurement data for prediction of software attributes e.g., defects. In the third phase, the solutions are evaluated in the software development industry with the help of surveys and empirical data of software projects. A set of key components and a model of success factors are evaluated based on a survey among 200 software professionals working in the Pakistani software development industry. A model of success for planning MPs specifically in SMEs is evaluated based on a survey among 217 software professionals working in SMEs of Pakistan. The D2MSP model is evaluated using a dataset of 760 projects and later applied in a software development organization as a case study. Overall, this research contributes to the theory and practice of software measurement by providing an improved understanding of planning software MPs and proposing and validating models of success factors and the D2MSP model for planning MPs.

Implementation of Gaussian Process Regression in Estimating Motor Vehicle Insurance Claims Reserves

This study aims to calculate the allowance for losses by applying Gaussian Process regression to estimate future claims. Modeling is done on motor vehicle insurance data. The data used in this study are historical data on PT XYZ's motor vehicle insurance business line during 2017 and 2019 (January 2017 to December 2019). Data analysis will be carried out on the 2017 - 2019 data to obtain an estimate of the claim reserves in the following year, namely 2018 - 2020. This study uses the Chain Ladder method which is the most popular loss reserving method in theory and practice. The estimation results show that the Gaussian Process Regression method is very flexible and can be applied without much adjustment. These results were also compared with the Chain Ladder method. Estimated claim reserves for PT XYZ's motor vehicle business line using the chain-ladder method, the company must provide funds for 2017 of 8,997,979,222 IDR in 2018 16,194,503,605 IDR in 2019 amounting to Rp. 1,719,764,520 for backup. Meanwhile, by using the Bayessian Gaussian Process method, the company must provide funds for 2017 of 9,060,965,077 IDR in 2018 amounting to 16,307,865,130 IDR, and in 2019 1,731,802,871 IDR for backup. The more conservative Bayessian Gaussian Process method. Motor vehicle insurance data has a short development time (claims occur) so that it is included in the short-tail type of business.

Association Study of Single Nucleotide Polymorphismin the Upstream Region of Tumor Necrosis Factoralpha Gene With Asthma

Asthma is an obstructive airway inflammatory disease which causes narrowing of airway, airflow obstruction and produces wheezing sounds. Tumor necrosis factor a polymorphism leads to inflammation and provoke asthma which lead to morbidity and mortality in the population. The objective of the study was to look into single nucleotide polymorphism in upstream region of TNF a at -238 and -308 by ARMS PCR technique in asthmatic and control group. It was a prospective study constituting 17 clinical diagnosed asthmatic patients (Diseased) and 19 non-asthmatic patients (Control). The female was 6 (31.6%) and male were 13 (68.4%) in control group while female were 9 (52.9%) and male were 8 (47.1%) in asthmatic group. Mean age (49.59?15.82 year) and BMI (21.96?06.67 kg/m2) were recorded for asthmatic group while mean age and BMI for control group were recorded to be 32.82?12.50 year and 18.87?05.17kg/m , respectively. PCR amplification of TNF a gene was done in a thermocycler for -238 and -308 genotype analysis by the ARMS technique and statistical analysis showed that there was association between asthma and TNF a polymorphism at -238 G>A (p < 0.0001) and -308 G>A (p < 0.0086). Clinical genetic testing should be recommended to use TNF a polymorphism as a biomarker in asthmatic patients to reduce its adverse effects.
