Previous years have witnessed explosive enhancements in the amount of biological data due to scientific advancements in life sciences and their related complex engineering methodologies. Biological data mostly comprised of De-oxyribonucleic acid (DNA), Ribonucleic acid (RNA) and Protein structures (Ps) can be visualized at two levels, i.e. i) at macro-level and ii) at micro-level. At macro-level, it is classified as structured, semi-structured and unstructured contents related to bioinformatics domain. At micro-level, its contents can be diversified as dynamic, evolutionary and frequently occurring data formats. Biological data exists in heterogeneous formats and is presented by different notations and terminologies. Traditional data models such as object oriented, relational and hierarchical etc. are ham-fisted to handle this biological data stream due to its ever occurring structural changes. To incorporate these dynamic and evolutionary characteristics of biological data, there is a dire need of unified data model that empowers such characteristics for their efficient storage, retrieval and manipulation of biological data. This research work introduces Bio-TOS for modeling biological data based on Temporal Object-Oriented System (TOS) which itself is a well-established area for evolutionary domains. Dealing with polymorphic behavior, evolving nature of biological data, downward inheritance, and knowledge sharing across several families are some of the modifications applied to TOS. The presented unified data model for biological data is evaluated through implementing real life case study of bacteriocine (micro-organism in DNA). Architecture of Bio-TOS is provided for realization of the proposed data model. We further propose a Bio-Share Know (BSK) mechanism and query language to facilitate efficient storage, retrieval and manipulation of biological data. Finally, outcome of this research work is validated through an information retrieval system deployed at Bioinformatics Lab, KICS, UET Lahore.

MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE VERSUS PASSIVE MANUAL SOFT TISSUE THERAPIES ON PLANTER FASCIITIS: A SYSTEMIC REVIEW

Aims of Study: Planter fasciitis (PF) is a common cause of heel pain. Muscle energy technique (METs) and passive soft tissue therapies are widely used for its management. The objective of this review was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of METs and passive soft tissue therapies on PF. Methodology: An extensive electronic literature search was made using different databases and search engines. Studies regarding METs and soft tissues therapies were investigated according to the eligibility criteria, using extracted data form and assessed for risk of bias. Outcome measures were pain and functional status. Quality assessment was done with Downs and Black, Cochrane risk of bias tool, PEDro scale and Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) tool. Results: Five articles met the selection criteria, were systematically reviewed for quantitative synthesis on comparative effects of METs and passive soft tissue therapies on PF. The quality of studies was moderate to high. Limitations and Future Implications: Less evidence on desired interventions and outcome measures was the limitation. Relative efficacy helps in clinical decision making and improve patient’s related outcomes. Originality: This review is the independent creation of authors. Conclusion: Manual soft tissue techniques are more effective than METs on improving pain and function in planter fasciitis.

Haar Wavelet and Meshless Techniques for Elliptic and Parabolic Models With Interfaces

In this thesis, we consider two collocation methods, namely, Haar Wavelet Collocation Method (HWCM) and Meshless Collocation Method (MCM) with Radial Basis Functions (RBFs). Two new algorithms based on HWCM and MCM are developed for one-dimensional linear elliptic problems with single as well as double interfaces. The proposed methods are extended to include two- and three-dimensional elliptic problems. We also consider parabolic interface problems in which time derivative is involved. The time derivative is approximated bynite di erence and Crank-Nicolson schemes. Both the proposed methods are developed for linear parabolic problems as well. The new numerical methods are also applied to nonlinear elliptic and parabolic problems. The algorithms are designed for all the new developed methods. The MATLAB software is used for implementations and testing of all the new methods. Several numerical experiments are taken into account in order to check the performance of the new developed methods. The numerical results are compared with exact solution as well as existing methods in literature which show the superiority of the proposed methods. A comparative study between HWCM and MCM in terms of e ciency, accuracy and applicability is also performed.
