Low enrollment of girls in science is a general concern for everyone. It seems that girls are not getting full advantage from the study of science. This study is aimed at developing a better understanding of the issue of low participation in science at the secondary school level. The qualitative study was conducted in two urban schools, a government girls' school and private co-education school. In this study twenty girls (ten from science and ten from the arts group), five parents, four teachers and two head teachers were interviewed. Participant observation and informal talks were also used for data collection. In order to crosscheck information, a triangulation approach was used. The findings of the study show that there are certain factors, which support and inhibit girls' selection in the science group. The study suggests that the number of supporting factors were less than the hindering factors. The main supporting factors include: high status of science education, inspiration from role models, preference of science graduates in the job market. The main inhibiting factors were: students' perception of science subjects as difficult, school policies regarding admission in science group, home environment/low economic status of parents and the custom of early marriage in communities. Some others factors were also noted. The study puts forward certain recommendations to deal with the issue so that the number of girls be enrolled in the science group, at the secondary school level may increase.

تمہارے ہجر میں وہ لان بھی ہے افسردہ،
چراغِ راہ تھے جب، روشنی لٹاتے تھے،
بلا کا صبر ، سماعت اٹھاۓ پھرتی تھی،
ہماری آنکھ اب اس آنکھ کو ترستی ہے،
جو سحر دم تری خوشبو میسر آتی تھی،
جو لمحہ بھر کو کبھی تم سے روٹھ جاتے تھے، خدا سے مانگنا ہوتا تھا جب بھی تیرے لئے،

الاجتهاد في بعض أحكام الربا فهـماً وتنـزيلاً

يهدف البحث إلى تلمس اجتهادات العلماء في فهم بعض آيات وأحاديث الربا، والوقوف على الأحكام التي تقررها النصوص الشرعية في بعض المعاملات المالية، ثم استثمار بعض آليات الاجتهاد التنزيلي والنظر المقاصدي لإناطة الأحكام الشرعية المناسبة بعلل وأوصاف ومعاني بعض أنواع التداول المستجد للأموال. وقد توصل الباحث إلى مجموعة من النتائج أهمها أنَّ فهم النصوص الشرعية عملية ضرورية قبل تصدي المجتهد إلى استنباط الحكم الشرعي، وهي عملية لازمة وسابقة لتنزيل الأحكام على النوازل المستجدة، تتطلب استدعاء آليات للتحقيق والتنزيل لضمان التوفيق في اعتبار مآلات الأفعال في كل نازلة. كما وجد أن التعامل بالربا والانخراط في بعض المعاملات المالية الربوية المستحدثة؛ يفضي إلى أضرار أخلاقية واجتماعية واقتصادية على الفرد والمجتمع الكلمات المفتاحية: الربا، الحكم الشرعي، الاجتهاد، الفهم، التنزيل.

Association Study of Single Nucleotide Polymorphismin the Upstream Region of Tumor Necrosis Factoralpha Gene With Asthma

Asthma is an obstructive airway inflammatory disease which causes narrowing of airway, airflow obstruction and produces wheezing sounds. Tumor necrosis factor a polymorphism leads to inflammation and provoke asthma which lead to morbidity and mortality in the population. The objective of the study was to look into single nucleotide polymorphism in upstream region of TNF a at -238 and -308 by ARMS PCR technique in asthmatic and control group. It was a prospective study constituting 17 clinical diagnosed asthmatic patients (Diseased) and 19 non-asthmatic patients (Control). The female was 6 (31.6%) and male were 13 (68.4%) in control group while female were 9 (52.9%) and male were 8 (47.1%) in asthmatic group. Mean age (49.59?15.82 year) and BMI (21.96?06.67 kg/m2) were recorded for asthmatic group while mean age and BMI for control group were recorded to be 32.82?12.50 year and 18.87?05.17kg/m , respectively. PCR amplification of TNF a gene was done in a thermocycler for -238 and -308 genotype analysis by the ARMS technique and statistical analysis showed that there was association between asthma and TNF a polymorphism at -238 G>A (p < 0.0001) and -308 G>A (p < 0.0086). Clinical genetic testing should be recommended to use TNF a polymorphism as a biomarker in asthmatic patients to reduce its adverse effects.
