This study presents findings of a small-scale action research carried out in one of the private schools of Gilgit-Baltistan. The study was conducted in a chemistry classroom with Grade 9 students and the class teacher. The research explored how practical work, in Grade 9 chemistry facilitates students' conceptual understanding of the selected concepts (States of Matter). The study was conducted over five weeks in two cycles. In the reconnaissance stage, two classes were observed, a pre-test, a focused group interview of six students and an interview of the teacher was taken. In cycles 1 and 2, the chemistry teacher and I planned and taught six lessons using this strategy. Data was collected through classroom observations, interviews and pre and post-test. The findings of the study revealed that students started getting familiarized with practical work; as a result there was a shift from a teacher directed class to a student led class. In the teacher directed class, the students did practical work according to the teachers' instructions. However, at the end of the 6th lessons, students developed the process skills i.e. investigated the topic, observed the process accurately, collected the data, and drew conclusions. The findings of the study also showed a considerable progression in terms of a shift from individual work to Collaborative work, resulting in confidence building and a shift from memorizing to engaging in practical science. Moreover, the significant difference (p < 0.001) in paired sample t-test showed a positive impact of the intervention on students learning. The study highlighted time, teacher and students' misconceptions, lack of laboratory resources, space, and students' lack of self-confidence as challenges in implementing practical work in the classroom. However, cognizant to its significance the study has implications for school in terms of students' better learning and effective teaching. Therefore, schools need to relook its method of teaching from theory to practices and teacher need to change their theoretical based teaching to practical based teaching.

Investigating Peace Education and Peace Culture Activities in the Curriculum of Secondary Schools of Pakistan

Peace has always been a fundamental need of humanity and social beings. Despite of all the worldly, scientific and materialistic progress in almost every domain of life, eternal peace is missing. Peace education is a process of achieving peace, at personal, inter-personal, national and international levels, through education, focusing on promoting universal brotherhood, fraternity, global citizenship and the culture of peaceful co-existence. This article aims to institutionalize peace education and culture at secondary government schools of Lahore, Pakistan. A questionnaire focusing on peace education and inculcating of peace culture was used for data collection. The data revealed peace education is implicitly taught but it is not practiced in schools and hence, is not part of school curriculum. Also peace culture-related activities are missing in the school curriculum and there is a dire need of such activities.

Road Obstacle Detection

Autonomous vehicle systems can be divided into two main parts, the perception system and the decision-making system. In this project, the goal was to focus on the perception system’s subsystem which was an object detector for road obstacle detection on the roads of Karachi. To do this, firstly a dataset of 3000 images was annotated with bounding box annotation for 12 different kinds of road obstacles. These images were extracted frames (every 10th second) from about 10 hours of dashcam footage from different areas of Karachi. In parallel three different models were trained on the Berkeley Deep Drive Dataset (BDD100k), which were YOLOv3, RetinaNet and Faster R-CNN. Due to computational constraints the models were trained on only 5,000 out of 70,000 images and validated on 1,000 out of 10,000 images present in the BDD100k dataset. The models trained had the following mAP on BDD100k; YOLOv3(29.47), RetinaNet(37.34) and Faster R-CNN(35.78). These models were then used as pretrained models for transfer learning on Karachi Dataset to create three new models. The models trained on this new dataset had the following mAP; YOLOv3(41.67), Retina Net(67.26), Faster R-CNN(65.80). Analysis suggests that transfer learning using the BDD100k dataset, is the most optimum technique for training an object detection model on Karachi Dataset
