Recently, culture has become the focus of many school improvement endeavours. Yet, only a few schools seem to be aware of the strong influence of culture on school improvement. Change in culture has been known to change a stuck school to a ‘moving’ school. To explore and understand the culture and its relationship with school improvement, this study was conducted in one of those ‘moving’ schools in Karachi, Pakistan. Within the qualitative paradigm, a neo research approach analysis of critical incidents was used. The incidents were identified through observations, and interpreted and classified through interviews, informal talk and discussions. Data was coded according to the research questions, regarding the values, beliefs, processes, and relationships that were reflected through these incidents and how they contributed to the school improvement efforts. Findings from the study showed that the school highly values and believes in students’ holistic development, shared leadership, life long learning and collaboration among all its members. The school believes that it is responsible not only for the academic development but also for the holistic development of students, specifically for developing disciplined and responsible individuals. The school believes that maximum involvement and collaboration among the stakeholders greatly contributes towards the successful implementation of the school improvement efforts. The school has a loose hierarchical structure, which follows a partially democratic and a partially autocratic culture. The on going school improvement efforts aim to move the school from conformity of authority to decentralization, from schooling to learning, from traditional school to a learning community and from individualism to collaboration. The findings from the study suggest a close but complex relationship between school culture and school improvement. The school’s vision, which comprises a mixture of all the values mentioned above, guided the school improvement efforts, which, in turn, started changing the existing culture. The initiatives started from within the school kept the stakeholders motivated and committed to accomplish their vision. During the process of initiation and implementation, the school continuously worked on mutual adaptation of the school culture. However, the initiatives are still considered as something new. To ensure sustainability, the school is engaged in activities like: eliminating competing and contradictory practices, establishing links with other change efforts, specifically to the curriculum and classroom teaching, and developing local facilitators for skills training.

Socio-Economic Factors of Differences in Public Health-Related Variables among Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

This study examines the association of living areas (slum and non-slum) with the selected public health-related variables in the presence of socioeconomic variables among married women and also having a child. A total of 150 women aged 18 to 49 are selected of which 50 women from slums and 100 women are from non-slum areas of Multan by applying the cluster and random sampling techniques. The cross-tabulation method is used to find the results. The dependent variable is Body Mass Index (BMI) and it is analyzed with the socio-economic variables such as mass media index, household characteristics and education. The findings exhibit that the BMI of the women living in the slum areas is low due to a low level of education, lack of mass media access, bad household structures, and poor or ignorant area. The women of the slum area have fewer mass media access, poor status of household characteristics and less education as compared to the women living in the non-slum areas. BMI is significantly affected by area, women's education and household characteristics except for physical work, job status, mass media access and husband education. The findings of this study suggest that to provide health facilities or to reduce the gap in public health, education, mass media access and households characteristics might be considered while making any decision related to the slum and non-slum areas.

Neutrino Oscillation Parameters and Optimization Techniques

We present a global analysis, through traditional and a new technique, of the solar neutrino data using total event rates of chlorine (Homestake), Gallax+GNO, SAGE, Superkamiokande and SNO detectors for the two neutrino case. The traditional is the grid search technique, where we calculate well known chi-square (χ 2 ) function for neutrino oscillations for a grid of the parameters ∆m2 and tan2 θ. We find our global minima in the LMA region with ∆m2 = 2.512 · 10−5 eV2 and tan2 θ = 0.3981. We also find local minimum χ 2 values in different regions of the parameter space. The new technique we chose is Differential Evolution. The Differential Evolution is a population based stochastic algorithm for optimization of real valued non-linear non-differentiable objective functions that has become very popular during the last decade. We combined this with the traditional grid based method for optimization of solar neutrino oscillation parameters ∆m2 and tan2 θ. We explore regions around the minima found in the global analysis using Differential Evolution for the fine tuning of the parameters, allowing even those values of the parameters which do not lie on any grid. We note as much as 4 times decrease in χ 2 value in the SMA region and even better goodness-of-fit as compared to our grid-based results. All this indicates a way out of the impasse faced due to CPU limitations of the larger grid method.
