The focus of this study was to explore the English language teachers' perceptions about the infusion of environmental issues into the teaching of English as a second language in lower secondary classrooms in Pakistan. The study was conducted in three private English medium schools in Karachi. A mixed methods approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods was applied to investigate English teachers' perceptions about the infusion process. The methodology comprised of two different phases, namely Phase I and Phase II, respectively. Phase I was an exploratory phase, which involved one participant teacher teaching English in the lower secondary section. In this phase, qualitative data were mainly collected through interviews, classroom observations and document analysis. Based on the issues identified in Phase I, the Phase II of the study was conducted so as to expand the understanding by collecting data from a larger sample. Data in this phase were collected through a survey questionnaire from 23 lower secondary English language teachers from two schools. The major findings of the study indicated that environmental issues were infused into English teaching but most teachers perceived a lack of time due to their heavy workload to be a significant barrier to the infusion process. The findings also showed that English teachers have some basic understanding of environmental education but do not have a firm grasp of the whole discipline area. It was also found that despite the inclusion of environmental issues in the English textbooks the schools were using, the teachers put more emphasis on factual information, appreciation, and awareness, but did not insist on developing students' skills so as to make them take the necessary action to resolve environmental issues facing their communities. Of equal importance, the findings also indicated that teachers considered the clear environmental education policy and administrative support in schools as opportunities that would encourage them to incorporate more environmental themes into their teaching of English. With regard to the underlying teachers' perceptions about the infusion of environmental issues into their teaching of English, recommendations are made about how to help English teachers incorporate environmental issues into the teaching of English in a more effective way.

The role of youth in development of any society is vital. They are the vanguard of any nation. The youth cannot play their role properly and positively unless they understand their responsibilities fully. Creating sense of responsibility in individual of a society especially in its youth is inevitable for the collective and dynamic development of a society. The life of the holy Prophet (r) is a complete guide for all spheres of our life. It is evident from the teachings of the holy Prophet (r) and the general commandments of Islam that the youth play a very important role in socio economic and politico educational development. The holy Prophet (r) showed complete confidence in youth. He delegated them with different responsibilities, provided complete guidance and encouraged them for discharging their duties properly. The companions of the holy Prophet (r) who embraced Islam as a result of his first invitation were young between the ages of 20 to 30. The worst enemy of Islam- Abu Jahal was got killed by two young brothers. Likewise a young man Muṣ‘ab bin ‘Umayr (Ï) was sent to Madina, and Mu‘āz bin Jabal (Ï) and Abu Mūsá Ash‘arī (Ï) were sent to Yemen. Zayd bin Thābit (Ï) was directed to learn other languages. He also compiled the holy Qur’ān in Caliphate of Abū Bakar (Ï). The holy Prophet appointed Ḥuzayfa (Ï) to take census. For creating leadership characteristics, Usāmah bin Zayd was sent to different war expeditions. These are ample proofs of holy Prophet’s confidence he had in the youth.

Ethnoecological Studies of Herbaceous Flora of Sahiwal Division, Punjab Pakistan

The present work deals with the ethnoecological studies on the herbaceous flora of Sahiwal Division with special reference to the documentation of ethnobotanical data, phytosociological notes and ethnopharmacological testing of ethnomedicinally important herbs including their antimicrobial, antioxidant and anthelmintic potential. The local people, herbal healer/ hakims were interviewed through questionnaire to collect and document the ethnobotanical data on the local herbaceous plants. In total, 180 herbal plant species, 177 belonging to 43 angiospermic, one species to one gymnospermic and two to pteridophytic families, were found in common use by the local inhabitants as forage / fodder, medicinal, food, feed and various other uses. The crude extracts of five ethnomedicinally important plants were obtained in polar and non-polar solvents (Water, methanol, chloroform and nhexane) by maceration method. The % age yield was found maximum in Cuscuta campestris distilled water extract and minimum in Aerva javanica n-hexane extract. The antimicrobial activity tested by agar well diffusion method indicated strongest antibacterial and antifungal activity by Persicaria glabra against Psedumonas aeruginosa and Aspergillus niger, respectively. The antioxidant activity was found quite convincing when revealed through six different assays. The highest antioxidant activity was shown by Cistanche tubulosa as revealed by ABTS+ Assay, TPC determination, TFC determination and Total antioxidant activity. The highest anthelmintic activity was shown by Cistanche tubulosa while least by Polygonum glabra. Vegetation of the study area was sufficient only for documentation, but insufficient for any economic purpose, yet some plants had shown very important phytosociological attributes. There was no much change in the soil parameters, yet ecological parameters like frequency, distribution and community structure were changing district wise. The TWINSPAN analysis of the vegetation of the study area divided it in to 3 groups and 12 associations, consisting of 159 plant species, in 222 quadrats.
