The construction of gender identity is a complex process which begins at a very early formative age. In the formative years, children begin making sense of how men and women are positioned in society. As important institutions, schools play an important role in this process, particularly with reference to students’ understanding of gender relationship around them. The present study explored how gender identity construction takes place in single sex classroom for early years. Qualitative research guided the study design which was conducted in two public sector’s single sex schools (one for girls and one for boys) in Karachi, Pakistan. The data were collected through observations of the teacher-student interactions, student-student interactions, focused group discussion with children from both the schools and semi-structured interviews with the teachers (male and female teacher). The study found that the teaching and learning is gendered in single sex settings of a school, as gender messages are passed on to the students which play an important role in the gender identity construction of these children. The study indicated that the teachers’ personal experiences greatly influence their perceptions regarding gender identities. There was also evidence that teachers have different expectations from girls and boys. Another important finding highlighted that children brought certain perceptions from home which contributed to the gender discourse in the context of the school. These children believed that they were different from each other because of being boys or girls and that they had different roles and responsibilities. Schools were, hence, found promoting those stereotypes regarding gender roles and responsibilities in a social context. All the participants were found to have views and practices around gender positioning which was approved by the larger society. The findings of the study emphasise the importance of gender awareness among the teachers in order to provide an equitable learning environment to the students. The research has significance for teachers, teacher educators and school management who wish to promote gender sensitive teaching and learning spaces in early years’ education.

غیر مسلم اقلیتوں کے حقوق کا اسلامی فلسفہ: قرآنی تناظر میں تجزیاتی مطالعہ

Islamic Philosophy of the Rights of Non-Muslims Minorties: An Analysis in Qur’ᾱnic Perspective Islam is complete code of life for entire humankind. According to the Holy Quran all human beings have been created from a single person (Adam). By birth all are equal and have all fundamental rights irrespective of their religion. If a group is numerically inferior to the rest of the population of state in a non-dominant position, will not be considered minority according to Quran. Quran classify people into two different categories: believers and non-believers on the base of their belief instead of numerical value. Minorities enjoy all fundamental rights and freedoms in Islamic territory. This article demonstrates in the light of Quran that Islam does not discriminate between Muslims and non-Muslims in the matter of rights and will clarify the objection of western propaganda that Islam is rigid for non-believers. There are different types of Non-Muslims living in Islamic state as minority. According to Quran, concept of minority is unique, minority does not mean inferior in number. This paper will reveal the types of minorities and their specific rights along with their basic rights too. It has been concluded that Islam is only religion which offers basic human rights at the level of equality irrespective their religion.

Anatomical Studies on the Phaeophycota of Karachi Coast

Thirty-six species of epilithic brown algae, with multicellular, foliaceous and thalloid organizations belonging to three classes, three orders, four families and fifteen genera of the phylum Phaeophycota have been collected from Manora, Hawkesbay, Buleji and Paradise Point, the coastal areas near Karachi (Pakistan) during March 2006 and June 2010. They were morphologically investigated, identified with the help of existing literature and taxonomically described. As a result of that three new species viz. Iyengaria nizamuddinii, Spatoglossum shameelii and S. qaiserabbasii were discovered and eleven species were described for the first time from the coast of Pakistan. The occurrence of Padinopsis is its first record of growth in the Indian Ocean. In the previously described species, several new characters and taxonomic variations were recorded. Later on the collected species were investigated anatomically in detail. For this purpose, the thalli were first studied in surface view. Then cross sections (CS) were obtained from apical middle and lower parts of the thalli and microscopically examined to understand mode of growth and morphogenesis of thallus. Wherever possible, the CS and longitudinal sections (LS) of stipe, holdfast or heptron were obtained, in several cases the marginal portion of the thalli were also studied. The anatomy of fertile parts was investigated to understand reproductive structures, their development and pre-fertilization changes. The information obtained was compared with the previously published descriptions and discussed in each species. In most of the cases new and much detailed information was obtained and several new anatomical features were discovered.
