The aim of this research study was to measure the motivation of girls towards learning Science at the secondary school level. The data were collected from ten girls' schools, drawn from three towns of Karachi, Pakistan, through multi-stage random sampling in a cross-sectional survey. A 35-item questionnaire measuring six aspects of motivation toward learning science, that is, self-efficacy, active learning strategies, Science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal, and learning environment stimulation, was administered directly with 289 students over a period of three weeks, in February 2008. The data were analyzed to see the overall motivation of girls in Science and compare the motivational difference in three subjects; Physics, Chemistry and Biology, by using SPSS through descriptive statistics. My research questions were: 1. What motivates female students enrolled in 10th classes towards learning Science? 2. Is there any difference in the motivation of girls towards learning in Physics, Chemistry and Biology? Through descriptive statistics, that is, comparing mean and standard deviations, the results indicate that on average, the girls have high motivation towards learning science, and furthermore, their intrinsic motivation is higher as compare to their extrinsic motivation. The results also show that their intrinsic motivation is negatively influenced by their self-efficacy and learning environment stimulation. In addition, the comparison of the motivation of girls in Physics, Chemistry and Biology reveals that there is not a significant difference in the motivation of girls towards the three subjects. However, mean scores of girls in the three subjects indicated a slight difference; that is, motivation in biology (M= 3.9) is slightly higher than Chemistry (M=3.8) and Physics (M= 3.7). The results also indicated that the female science students have lower self-efficacy in Physics (M= 3.4), as compared to Chemistry (M=3.8) and Biology (M=3.9). Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommends encouraging female Science students to enhance their self-efficacy towards learning Science, which has a strong impact on their motivation to learn Science. It is also recommended for the researcher to conduct further studies on Science students at different class levels in order to explore their motivational difference at each stage.

The Need of Efficient Water Management in Pakistan

Water is a sign of life, all living beings need it to remain alive. It is natural commodity and three fourth of this planet is water. Still not all is suitable for human consumption and sufficient to meet the ever increasing demands. Availability and supply of water is getting scarce with increasing population of states especially the developing societies. If we look at the history of life on this planet, we find that the humanity has suffered disasters on acquisition and possession of natural resources which are vital for survival of one group, may be at the cost of others. Water falls in that category where if not properly managed its scarcity and stress would lead to unending conflicts and wars till demands equals the supply with the destruction of extra consumptions. Solution to the disastrous situation is in efficient management of water. The efficient and effective management combines awareness and justified storage and distribution of water by the states within their domains. Modern technology and management provides solutions for this efficient management of water by the states. ______

The Relationship Between Usability Characteristics and Technology Acceptance Model: An Emperical Case of Web Based Transactional Systems

In today’s era of technological competitiveness, the world has witnessed an unprecedented enhancement and technological expansion in electronic market. This tough competition has made it really difficult for the firms to survive without introducing technological modifications within existing business processes and structure. Therefore, it was wise enough for the companies across the globe to invest huge part of their capital in launching web-based systems, thus making sure that more users are involved and have access to the systems globally. Nevertheless, the key factors that play the most vital role in making such systems successful, is solely the will of users as to much extent they are comfortable using these systems. If users are not willing to fully utilize given systems then this will not help firms to generate revenue on their investment. It was therefore necessary to systematically understand users’ decision making process towards acceptance of such systems. In this regard this research was aimed to design and develop a framework of influential factors that were expected to improve efficiency, acceptability and usage of web-based transactional systems. The model developed in this study was based on well-established technology acceptance model. Despite the popularity of technology acceptance model, there was not a single study, as per author’s knowledge, that has studied and extended it from usability perspective. Although usability has been considered in prior work as a dominant factor for success of the system. Little efforts, however, were devoted to the fundamental issues such as what specific usability characteristics are expected to have an impact on users’ acceptance behaviour or how the acceptance or usage of such systems would be influenced by usability features. This is so because if usability related dimensions/factors are indeed confirmed to show an effect on users’ decision behaviour, online vendors and their design team would be able to focus on those specific dimensions and to positively motivate users towards such systems’ acceptance and usage.
