Science teachers' perceptions and understanding of Nature of Science (NOS) is central to scientific literacy worldwide. This qualitative case study aimed to explore the perceptions of nine secondary school science teachers about NOS from six private schools of Gilgit. The three important tenets of NOS relevant to school science were, science being tentative in nature, empirical nature of science and scientific laws and theories. The schools and participants; three teachers from each discipline; chemistry, biology and physics were chosen through purposive sampling. Data was collected via two tools which were written in English and Urdu. The research tool, Views of Nature of Science (VoNOS) had six open-ended questions to be answered in written, while Nature of Science Research Protocol (NOSRP) was a semi-structured interview tool with four critical incidents to elicit verbal responses which were audio-taped with their consent. The data was thematically analyzed after transcription, verbatim, translation from Urdu to English and coding.Their responses were categorized into the three predominant themes as informed, adequate and inadequate by using a rubric adapted from Khan (2014). The results were noteworthy; it was revealed that despite not having read explicitly about NOS participants' held informed perceptions about science being tentative and empirical NOS. They believe that science is not fixed rather it is an on-going process, based on observation, experimentation and inferences. However, majority had adequate perceptions about laws and theories. They believed that that theories and laws are different but sometimes theories can convert into laws when proven right. Hence, this study recommends that the stake holders need to revisit the content of textbooks for updated knowledge about laws and theories and add many examples regarding it. The findings of this study can help science teachers, educators and researchers to understand the three aspects of NOS and become aware of the misconceptions about them.

الدّراسة النّقدية لكتاب “Muslim Tradition” في ضوء الكتاب البدر المنير للإمام ابن الملقّن

Dr. Juynboll (1935-2010) was an Orientalist. He was born in Leiden, South Holland and obtained his doctoral degree in 1969. He worked at the University of California. He was a specialist of Hadith. In 1983, Cambridge University Press published his work “Muslim Tradition: Studies in Chronology, Provenance and Authorship of Early Hadith”. This work contains a critical assessment of the persons who were involved in the formation of Islamic orthodoxy. Imam Ibnul Mulaqqi is a Muslim Scholar who examined Ahadith of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)‎ and did exhaustive work in pointing out ‎the reasons of hidden weakness in it. So through this article we will be able to judge the views and opinions of ‎ Dr. Juynboll about the Provenance and Authorship of Early Hadith and methodology of a Muslim Scholar for scrutinizing and examining the collection of Ahadith through his historical book “Albdrul-Muneer”‎.

Use of Portfolios in Development of Paragraph Writing Skills of Grade Ix, in a Public School: Evidence from Hunza Valley

The purpose of doing this action research is to develop the paragraph writing skills by using portfolios. There are two main activities which enable the students to learn i.e. teaching and assessment activities. To conduct this study, the teaching activities for paragraph writing are accomplished through a process writing approach while the students' learning was assessed formatively through portfolio assessment. The study was conducted in three action research cycles which provided a knowledge and autonomy of continuously evaluating the teaching and assessment activities and their implementation in the class. The selection of research participants was done through purposive sampling with six students of grade IX. The data for portfolio development was taken from the students' activities; sample of paragraphs, self and peer assessed work samples, reflections, and feedback of teacher as well as peer. The findings of the study revealed that the use of portfolios for developing paragraph writing skills remained successful and students also became aware of new teaching and assessment strategies. Moreover, the feedback, group work, discussion, self and peer assessment found were found more fruitful in developing students paragraph writing skills. The implication from this study was that, portfolio development is a gradual process which takes considerable time and results in workload for both students and the teacher. To overcome this challenge, careful planning of teaching activities, teaching strategies, assessment activities, materials and time management was set out earlier. However, the study suggests that the portfolios are effective tools for developing students writing skills and evaluating ongoing learning of the student.
