Mobile phone has become an integral functional part of our society. Also, according to recent the PTA report, the penetration rate of mobile phones Tele-density in Pakistan has reached to 73.9% per annum. Hence, capitalizing on this phenomenon a research study was conducted. That explored students’ perceptions about mobile phones and their effective use particularly in Mathematics at secondary schools in Karachi, using a mixed methods sequential approach. The research adopted a survey methodology followed by pure action research. Data were collected through survey questionnaires, interviews, Students’ sample work, their comments via SMS and class observation. Based on the key findings of the reconnaissance stage, that showed that on an average basis, 70% of the students had a personal mobile phone, 94 out of 119 students’ use SMS and 76 students preferred to play games on MP regularly on daily basis. 63% students had experience of using MPs for more than one year and the rest of 37% students had experience of less than a year. Also many students (M=3.14) were uncertain about Mathematics learning using SMS application and equally a large number (M=3.16) of students were uncertain about learning through videos. An action research plan was prepared to involve students in learning Mathematics using mobile phones through digitized lessons content in the real classroom contexts. The study developed and used digitized learning materials using SMS, MMS, video clips, camera and pictures. The students used their own mobile phones for the execution of all assigned tasks. The study establishes that; a) Students’ perceive MPs as Interacting, Communicating, Mathematical Learning and Problem Solving tool; b) Students found mobile phones as a tool for improving mathematical skills, collaborative and self-learning, exploring Mathematics individually and collectively, and a tool that connected their classroom learning with their real life experiences and c) Mobile phones help teachers in spot teaching, feedback and assessments. Hence, mobile phone can be used to benefit students’ mathematics learning through adequate teachers’ preparation, parents’ support and policy provisions on the effective integration of m-learning in the teaching and learning processes at all levels.

جدید تفسیری ادب میں بنت الشاطی کی امتیازی خدمات

Āisha bint Abdu Al-Rahmān (1913-1998), better known by her pen nickname ‘Bint Ash-Shātī’, was one of the 20th-century Egyptian exegetes (mufassirīn) of the Qur'ān who implemented the methodological approach to the interpretation of the Qur'ān introduced by her teacher, mentor and husband Amīn alKhawlī, an eminent Egyptian scholar of the Qur'ān who contributed to the Qur'ānic sciences from several important aspects. Bint Ash-Shātī continued the legacy of her teacher and published a number of works related to the discipline of the Qur'ānic sciences such as al-Tafsīr al-Bayānī li al-Qur'ān alKarīm and al-I’jāz al- Bayānī li al- Qur'ān wa Masā’īl Ibn alAzraq. She made an attempt to examine all the previous Qur'ānic exegeses. Though Bint Ash-Shātī benefited from the classical tafsīr literature in her writings, she made several critiques on the classical tafsīr literature. Because of her scholarly approach, she became a famous Qur'ānic scholar in her life and even she was awarded the King Faisal Award,  the most prestigious award in the Muslim world, in 1993 for her intellectual contributions. This paper attempts to analyze the methodological approach adopted by Bint Ash-Shātī in her works on Qur'ānic studies.

Positive and Negative Outcomes of Active and Passive Procrastination Among Pakistani Adolescents

Present study intended to explore the positive and negative outcomes of procrastination among Pakistani adolescents. Procrastination has generally been viewed in negative connotations but in this study researcher followed Chu and Choi’s (2005) perspective of procrastination; active vs. passive to see if there is any positive type of procrastination and does it also exist in our cultural setting. To meet this objective, the study was carried out in three parts. Part I was completed in three phases; try out; translation, adaptation, and cross language validation; and determining psychometric properties of New Active Procrastination Scale and Passive Procrastination Scale. The results of part I indicated sound alpha reliability coefficients of the scales. In part II (i.e., pilot study) psychometric properties of all the measures likely to be used in main study were determined and correlation coefficients among study variables were also computed to have an insight into the nature of relationship among variables. As the ultimate objective of the study was to explore the phenomenon of procrastination indigenously that will add valuable findings for researchers and counselors in helping adolescents to curb procrastination tendencies so in part III (i.e., main study) data was collected in two phases. In Phase I(N =201), online mode of data collection was adopted to establish psychometric properties of procrastination measures and expand the implications of the study for online population. As today is an age of globalization and advancement in technology. Results revealed sufficient alpha coefficient of scales and revealed significant main effect of procrastination x types in level of depression, anxiety, stress, and life satisfaction of nonprocrastinators, active procrastinators and passive procrastinators. Phase II of main study was conducted on a larger sample (N = 500) to test the formulated hypotheses. Findings indicated sound reliability of all the measures and confirmed the four factor structure of NAPS. Significant main effect of procrastination type was observed in differences regarding time management behavior, coping strategies, self-efficacy, personality traits, depression, anxiety, stress, life satisfaction, procrastination as a problem and academic achievement. Results revealed significant gender, grade, and academic level-wise differences in active and passive procrastination but with reference to age groups this difference was significant only on active procrastination. Moreover significant gender difference in time management, self-efficacy, emotion-focused coping, personality traits of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and in level of anxiety, stress, life satisfaction and procrastination a problem were also noted. Findings also revealed grade wise difference in time management and life satisfaction of adolescents. Multiple Logistic Regression analysis revealed emotion-focused coping, self-efficacy, emotional stability, intellect/openness to experience and conscientiousness as significant predictors of active and passive procrastination. As regards to outcome variables category of procrastinators significantly predicted the respondents’ level of depression, anxiety, stress, life satisfaction and his/her perception of procrastination being problematic for him. Practical implications of the study are highlighted for teachers, counselors, psychologists and practitioners while dealing with adolescent procrastinators. Future recommendation and limitations of the study have also been discussed.
