The study explored teacher performance appraisal and the potential benefits of appraisal as a mechanism for improving existing performance of teachers to collaboratively implement changes that lead to improve practice. The purpose of this Participatory Action Research (PAR) was to improve the existing documents and practices of teacher performance appraisal system and practices at a Community Based High School (CBS) in Karachi through collaboratively involving the principal and teachers in a systematic process of improvement. The research was qualitative in nature using PAR model as suggested by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (2000). This PAR model provided opportunities of constantly evaluating the teaching and learning strategies and their implementation in a real setting. The data of the study was collected through interviews, classroom-observations and feedback processes, assessments tools, field notes, reflection of research participants and document analysis to obtain empirical evidence of existing practices and perceptions. The findings were processed through data analysis by arranging data systematically and breaking it into units through coding, in order to meaning making of the data. The findings of research revealed that the awareness about the appraisal system and process is indispensable to improving the practices and understanding of the teachers. Moreover, it emerged from the findings that timely feedback, involvement, trainings and evaluation of set targets acted as cornerstones to improve the practice and process of the appraisal system. The findings reveal that the awareness training programmes regarding appraisal system enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers if the appraisal documents are understood by the teachers. Further research revealed that involvement of teachers in developing appraisal documents creates a sense of ownership, and this feature helps to improve the practices. The two purposes of appraisal, i.e. accountability and professional development, may not be segregated from each other at CBS; however, the focus of appraisal system shifted from accountability to professional development. This study holds significance for various audiences directly or indirectly, such as CBS where I carried out this research, and my own organization which I work for. The study could help in strengthening the appraisal system and process and it could also enable principals in further improving their appraisal system and practices. The recommendations that have come from this research are that school leadership should involve the teachers in making policies and procedures so that the teachers feel ownership of the appraisal system. دوسرا حادثہ دارالعلوم ندوۃ العلماء کے شیخ الحدیث مولانا شاہ حلیم عطا صاحب کی وفات ہے، وہ حضرت شاہ پیر محمد عطا سلونویؒ کی اولاد میں تھے اور موجودہ سجادہ نشین شاہ نعیم عطا صاحب کے چھوٹے بھائی تھے۔ یہ خاندان علم و فضل دونوں کا جامع رہا ہے۔ شاہ حلیم عطا صاحب بڑے وسیع النظر عالم اور اسلامی علوم کا زندہ کتب خانہ تھے۔ خصوصاً حدیث اور اس کے متعلقہ فنون پر ان کی نظراتنی گہری اور وسیع تھی کہ اس دور کے علماء میں اس کی مثالیں کم ملیں گی۔ حضرت الاستاذؒ فرمایا کرتے تھے کہ شاہ صاحب کے علم کی تھا نہیں ملتی اور اس علم و فضل کے ساتھ ایسے خاکسار اور متواضع، سادہ مزاج اور بھولے بھالے تھے کہ ان کو دیکھ کر کوئی شخص مشکل سے ان کے لکھے پڑھے ہونے کا گمان کرسکتا تھا۔ اپنے سے کمتر علم والوں کی باتیں اس شوق اور توجہ سے سنتے کہ معلوم ہوتا خود استفادہ کررہے ہیں۔ حافظہ حیرت انگیز تھا، کتابوں کے صفحے کے صفحے زبانی یاد تھے مگر ان کمالات کے ساتھ قوت گویائی اور قوت ِ تحریر نہ تھی، اس سے بھی زیادہ ان کی تواضع اور استغنانے ان کو نام و نمود سے بے نیاز کردیا تھا، اس لیے ایک محدود علمی حلقہ کے سوا علمی دنیا بھی ان کے کمالات سے واقف نہ ہوسکی، تقریباً پندرہ سال سے دارالعلوم ندوۃ العلماء میں حدیث نبوی کا درس دیتے تھے اور اسی مبارک شغل میں چند دنوں فالج میں مبتلا رہ کر انتقال کیا۔ انتقال کے وقت ۶۵ سال کی عمر رہی ہوگی۔ اﷲ تعالیٰ اس پیکر علم و اخلاق کو اس کے پاک شغل کے طفیل میں عالم آخرت کی سربلندی عطا فرمائے۔

An Analytical Study of the Economic Condition of Jews in Fatimid Egypt

This study examines the economic conditions of Jews in Fatimid Egypt from the 10th to 12th centuries CE. Through an analysis of primary sources, the study provides a nuanced understanding of the economic and social factors that affected the Jewish community during this period. The study argues that while Jews in Fatimid Egypt enjoyed certain economic privileges such as their involvement in international trade networks and their exemption from some taxes, they also faced some social and political restrictions, including forced conversion and discriminatory laws in the era of some Fatimid rulers. Despite these challenges, the Jewish community in Fatimid Egypt demonstrated resilience and adaptability, developing a range of economic strategies to maintain their livelihoods and build social networks. These strategies included investment in trade and finance, engagement with the wider Muslim society, and the development of communal institutions. The study highlights the complexity of Jewish economic life in medieval Egypt, challenging simplistic assumptions about the economic conditions of minority groups in pre-modern societies.

Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Spinel Based Transition Metal Oxides

Theoretical study of Spinel based Transition Metal Oxides is reported. The Density Functional Theory approach is adopted for computational investigation using LAPW code. The structural, elastic properties of (XAl2O4 for X=Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), (MGa2O4 for M=Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd), (NIn2O4 for N=Mg, Zn, In) & (ZnP2O4 for P=V, Cr, Fe, Rh, Sn) along with electronic & magnetic properties of cubic spinel oxides (XAl2O4) and (MGa2O4) have calculated. The calculated structural parameters conform to other experimental and theoretical evidences. Fulfillment of elastic stability criteria proves the reliability of the reported data. The calculated elastic constants show that all materials abide its stability opposing elastic deformations and the Cauchy’s pressure confirms the dynamical stability of these materials. The high values of bulk moduli show the hardness of these materials while the Young moduli data reveal that MgAl2O4 is the stiffer material among all. Further, Poisson’s ratios testify the compressibility, connote stableness to external deformation of these materials and reveal dominance of central forces being the interatomic forces. Out of 24 materials, only 05 are brittle and the rest are ductile with elastic anisotropy. MgAl2O4 is the most brittle and CdGa2O4 is the most ductile material. The electronic structure (Total DOS) show all XAl2O4, MGa2O4 (M=Fe, Co, Zn, Cd) have antiferromagnetic, NiGa2O4 & CuGa2O4 have FM state and the valence near Fermi level due to the transition metal 3d state. The calculation of direct exchange energy Δx(d) shows that the exchange mechanism of electrons is dominant in introducing magnetism and enormous exchange splitting is observed in these materials. The ferromagnetism in the group MGa2O4 of spinel oxide compounds is due to hybridization between the electrons in the 3d-states cation and 2p states anion. Appearance of magnetic moments in these materials is due to unpaired electrons in 3d states of Transition metal ions. The negative value of indirect exchange energy confirms the magnetism by spin of electrons.
