No one can deny the importance of reading skills especially for the students. There is a strong link between students’ performance and the pedagogical strategies of EL Teachers. Research claims that different pedagogical strategies used by teachers help students in developing their reading skills. This study aimed to identify and compare the pedagogical strategies used by ELTs of both public and private schools at Middle level (VI- VIII) for developing students’ ‘reading skills’ in Skardu City. For this purpose, a cross-sectional survey design (descriptive) was employed to collect data from all middle level schools (n=69 out of 72) of Skardu City. The sample of 100 teachers from both public (n=50) and private schools (n=50) teachers were observed through Observation Scale for Reading Lesson (OSRL) where a maximum of three teachers from each school participated. The results show that more than 50% of the ELTs use some pedagogical strategies for developing reading skills. Specifically, three strategies were used by more than 80% of the teachers. The results illustrate that most of the teachers mainly focus on oral fluency, explanation of the text, model and feedback during classroom tasks besides few comprehension and assessment strategies for developing reading skills. While majority of the teachers do not use some important strategies of comprehension, prediction, inferring the vocabulary from the text, silent reading and connection of reading with written strategies. This study further reveals that participant teachers of both public and private schools use more or less similar pedagogical strategies with some variation for developing the reading skills. However, private school teachers have shown better performance as compared to their public counterparts particularly in using six strategies where significant differences were also found. To sum up this study highlighted that there is a dearth of using relevant pedagogical strategies to achieve the standards, benchmarks and SLOs of NCEL (2006). It is strongly recommended that purposeful training programmes with proper follow up should be organized for altering the beliefs and polishing teachers’ professional competency for developing reading skills of the students.

Kashmir: Occupation and Resistance

Kashmir became a part of the Muslim World in the 14th century C E. Under the local Sultans (1325-1585) , the Mughals (1586-1752) and the Pathans (1752-1819) , it developed into a state and society with its own peculiar Islamic culture. Kashmir was colonised by the Sikhs (1819-46) from the Punjab and the Hindu Dogra Maharajas (1846-1947) . The Muslim Kashmir stood for Islam through the freedom movement during this period. When the movement under the banner of Islam was at its apex and it seemed that the mahkutn (colonised / enslaved) Kashmir was about to achieve the goal, India ( Bharat) , a newly born nation (Aug 15, 1947) , invaded it on Oct. 27, almost 3 months after her own birth. Since then this newly emerging occupying -power through its policies of political deceit, cultural aggression, economic onslaught and delslamizing educational schemes has given rise to the problem of the IOK (Indian Occupied Kashmir) . The paper narrates the story of the past up to 1988-uprising & throws light on the oppression, persecution and discrimination that the Muslim Kashmir has been witnessing. The form offreedom-movement that followed from 1947 to 1989 is also outlined. In 1989 Jihad Kashmir, a new phase of the movement that invited the attention of the world begins. The paper helps to understand the background ofthe genesis ofthis new phase

Identity in Pakistan’S Foreign Policy: Collaboration With Usa

This dissert ation aims to understand the identit y constructions that accompany Pakistan‘s securit y related foreign policy collaboration with USA. This research is motivated by three question s. Firstl y, can an appropriate theoretical framework be designed to conduct th is inquiry? Secondl y, what were the identity constructions that attempted to accommodate Pakistan‘s collaboration with USA? Thirdl y, w ere there any contradictions in the identit y constructions that accompanied the collaboration? A review of literature has shown that not much scholarl y work has been undertaken on the identit y of Pakistan and no scholarl y literature could be found to have focused on the dissertation‘s topic. This research is significant because it will help advance the understanding of Pakistan‘s foreign policy and will illuminate aspects of Pakistan‘s relation with USA. Using a constructive theoretical framework the dissertation looks at three distinct periods of securit y collaboration between Pakistan and USA, which cumulativel y span thirt y seven years. The findings from the research illustrate that during the first period of cooperation with USA, Pakistani identit y constructions sought to build convergences around shared values of democracy and progress. In the second period the focus shift ed to Islam and saving Muslims. In the third period the identit y constructions focus ed on projecting a moderate Islamic world view and distancing Pakistan from radical Islam. Islam is an aspect of identit y that is important during the three periods of Pakis tan‘s cooperation with USA. However, Islam is invoked in different manners 12and, overall, no single identit y construct anchor s the cooperation. The Pakistani attempts at identit y constructions are weakened because of inherent contradictions. These include the general lack of support b y USA for Muslim countries of the Middle East , the divergence between USA‘s support for democracy and Pakistan‘s intermittent dictatorships , and the comprise of Pakistan‘s sovereignty that comes with Pakistan‘s support for the USA led War on Terror.
