In Sindh, girls' minimum participation in basic education is associated with a number of impeding factors which range from lack of resources to parents' negative attitude towards female education. Many initiatives have been taken for improving female literacy in the country, but no fruitful outcomes have been achieved so far. In the near past, Government of Pakistan started a national Adult Literacy Programme (ALP) in all over the country in order to achieve Education for All (EFA) goals, with an assumption that the ALP might have allowed the participants to revisit their views about female education, the study was designed to explore how these participants of an ALP in district Matiari viewed the need and value of female education, resulting from their firsthand experience of getting education. The study design was guided by qualitative research. The research site was two villages of a union council in district Matiari where people had recently completed their 5-month duration adult literacy course in a national level ALP. The primary participants included 8 participants; 4 males and 4 females from each village, while four teachers of the same centers (2 males and 2 females) participated in the study as secondary participants. The data was generated through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews. The study found that the ALP had positive influence on the minds of the participants and they had started sending their children (particularly girls) to school. They had started taking interest in getting education themselves and also they viewed it pertinent for their children. The study recommends that the government, with collaboration with private/NGOs, can establish more schools for girls and provide them with basic resources. It may help reduce the dropout ratio and will encourage parents to send their girls to school.

TOWARDS INTEGRATING REHABILITATION INTO HEALTH SYSTEMS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL REGULATION

Strengthening rehabilitation in health systems and integrating rehabilitation across all levels of care depends on a mix of strategies, however all depend on an appropriately trained, resourced and organized workforce. Indeed, among the ten areas for action described in the World Health Organization 2030 initiative is developing a strong multidisciplinary rehabilitation workforce that is suitable for country context, and promoting rehabilitation concepts across all health workforce education.   The rehabilitation workforce is constantly evolving as it strives to provide safe practices and treatment choices based on the best available evidence to improve function, promote independence and help people reach their maximum potential. However, barriers to this evolution include a lack of well-resourced training programs, variations in the competencies expected within the standard entry-level curriculum, limited opportunities for continuing professional development, geopolitical instability, competing demands for limited health budgets and persistent de-prioritization of rehabilitation.

Attachment, Gender Role Conflict and Intimate Relationship in University Students

The present study investigated the relationship of Attachment, Gender Role Conflict and Intimate Relationship in University Students. Three scales namely Gender Role Conflict Scale, Intimate Relationship Scale and Adult Attachment Scale (Hazen & Shaver, 1986) were used in the study to test the main hypotheses. In the first part of the study two scales Pakistan Gender Role Conflict Scale, and Intimate Relationship Scales were developed. Factor analyses showed two factor solution for both scales. After that piloting was done. The sample of the study for the final analysis was 502 participants with the distribution of 286 (57%) men and 216 (43%) women. The mean age of the sample was (M= 20.14) (SD= 2.00). The findings of the study showed that secure attachment has significant negative correlation with externalized gender role conflict. Whereas, ambivalent and avoidant attachment have significant positive correlation with externalized gender role conflict. Moreover, gender role conflict is significantly positively related intimate relationship conflict. Also secure attachment is strongly positively correlated to intimacy in relationships. Whereas, ambivalent and avoidant attachment has significant negative relationship with intimacy in relation. Moreover, regression analysis showed that mother’s education and externalized conflict are predictors of intimate relationship. However, educational class along with internalized and externalized conflict also appeared to be predictors of intimate relationship. Moreover, attachment appeared to be mediator between gender role conflict and intimate relationship. Whereas, men and women have significant difference in terms of gender role conflict but there is no significant difference in terms of attachment styles and intimate relationships. Initial attachment effect socialization process that results in conflict while developing gender role. It further impact one’s ability to form and maintain intimate relations and these relational issues have vast implication in clinical setup. The results of the study were discussed in the light of cultural context of Pakistan and existing literature.
