The topic of ‘area’ is one of the challenging topics in curriculum of school mathematics. In most of the cases, conventional teaching methods based on formula, rules and algorithms do not help students to develop sound understanding. This study is an attempt to investigate how students’ conceptual understanding can be enhanced if they are provided with opportunities of using manipulatives. For this purpose, I conducted an action research within qualitative research paradigm with six students of grade VII in a private school of Karachi, Pakistan. The whole class was the secondary participants in the study. However, I selected a group of six students for in-depth analysis of their learning in the classroom. Also, pre and post focus group discussion (FGDs) from participant students and an interview from mathematics teacher were taken. This study consists of three stages, reconnaissance stage, implementation stage and post implementation stage. In reconnaissance stage, I examined students’ current understanding of area and process of teaching and learning of area through classroom observations, interview with mathematics teacher, focus group discussions (FGD) with students and document analysis. In implementation stage the topic was taught using manipulatives. Moreover, the instruction was designed considering hierarchical order of concrete, pictorial and symbolical representations to build students’ concepts. In post implementation stage, the focus was to understand students’ overall experience of using manipulatives and students understanding of area through post FGD. The findings revealed that students’ understanding of area and other concepts associated to it were developed. For example, they develop conceptual understanding of area as two dimensional quantity, use of appropriate unit of measurement, difference between area and perimeter and finding areas of shapes where direct length times breadth formula is not applicable. The contributing factors in developing students’ conceptual understanding were scaffolding as students move from easy to complex concepts, communication among students and with teachers enable students to convey their thoughts to clarify their understanding, simultaneous use of concrete, symbolic and pictorial representations and building connections among different concepts of area. Based on the findings, this study suggests that teachers should first use concrete, pictorial representation and then help students to make its connection with symbolic representations. It is important to understand which manipulative could be appropriate for helping students make transition from one representation to other. Keywords:Conceptual understanding, manipulatives, area.

قرآن مجید اور احادیث میں لفظ رحم کا تصور اور استعمالات

All praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the entire Universe Muhammad, who is a symbol of mercy, peace, and love to all human beings. Islam is a universal religion. Its blessings, bounties, and auspiciousness are common to all human beings irrespective of community, caste, creed, region, and nation. Islam is the religion of peace and mercy. It is a religion for humanity. It strongly emphasizes love and mercy in general. It teaches us that we should show mercy. R-?-M (Arabic: ?) is the tri consonantal root of many Arabic and Hebrew words, and many of those words are used in the Holy Quran. Holy Quran is a complete guide for all human beings. All chapters in the Quran, except one (Repentance Chapter), begin with the words “Bismillahiar-Rahman AR-Rahim” or in the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. IN Islam the title “Most Merciful” (al-Rahman) is one of the names of Allah and Compassionate (al-Rahim), which is the most common name occurring in the Quran. Rahman and Rahim both derive from the root Rahmat, which refers to tenderness and benevolence. Allah SWT could have used other attributes in its place, but he chooses these two which show their significance. God’s Mercy precedes his other attributes. Each worshipper repeats the attribute of mercy sixty-eight times/day during his five daily prayers. Without love and mercy, there will be chaos in society. Showing mercy to Allah’s creatures creates a society of peace and tolerance. That is why in Holy Quran Allah emphasized mercy and tenderness.

Evaluation of Pyeloplasty Among Children With Pelvouretric Junction Stenosis at French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children, Kabul, Afghanistan

Introduction: PUJO is one the most common pathology in paediatric urology. It is the most common cause of Hydronephrosis that may progress to irreversible damage to the kidney if not resolved. Aim: The study is to evaluate outcome of pyeloplasty and find out the association of demographic characteristics and clinical factor on outcome of pyeloplasty among children at FMIC, Kabul, Afghanistan. Methodology: A hospital based retrospective Case Series study design was conducted at French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children, Kabul, Afghanistan. Records of 150 participants who were admitted at surgery department under diagnosis of UPJO reviewed from first January, 2010 till last December 2015, among them 110 patients based on inclusion and exclusion criteria enrolled in the study. Chi square, one way ANOVA and paired t- test were run to determine the association of factors with outcome of Pyeloplasty. Results: Our study findings have identified that among 110 patients, 90 (88.1%) were males. Most of patients had problem on left side 79 (71.8%), right kidney in 23 (20.9%) and bilateral involvement in 8 (7.3%), all except one who diagnosed prenatally were diagnosed in postnatal period. The diagnostic tools used in this study were US and IVU. The most common complaints reported were flank pain 45.5%. Around 9 (8%) of patients had associated anomaly; most common obstructive cause were narrow ureter 86 (78.1%). Urinary tract infection was identified in 13 (11.8) patients. Hydronephrosis grading was according SFU grading system as Grade 1 (1) grade 2 (13) Grade 3 (58) and grade 4 (44) patients. Out of 110 patients, 90 had undergone Pyeloplasty procedure, while 20 patients with complete destroyed kidney had undergone nephrectomy. Patients were divided into two groups (< 2 years and > 2 years) according to their age. The follow up modality were US parameters (anteroposterior diameter of pelvis and percentage of improvement in pelvis diameter. PI more than 15 was considered as successful outcome. The overall success rate of Pyeloplasty procedure was 82%. This study revealed the factors that affect the outcome of Pyeloplasty included: degree of hydronephrosis before operation and presence or absence of UTI. Conclusion: UPJO is one of the most common pathology in paediatric urology; in chronic case, it may progress to irreversible damage of kidneys, Aarly operation causes better outcome, as this study finds out, it improves the renal function, which approved this finding by improved in creatinine clearance level.
