Genetics is a subject that many learners and teachers find difficult to learn and teach respectively. This cross-sectional survey study was carried out to investigate secondary school biology teachers’ conceptual understanding about the selected concepts of genetics including: Cell Division, Fertilization and Reproduction and Cells followed by comparison in teachers’ conceptual understanding across school system in Baltistan. Another aim was to identify the most difficult questions in the Genetic Conception Assessment (GCA) to indicate the difficulties in the particular concepts of genetics. GCA tool had adapted from a previous study and found to be reliable (α=0.84) and also validated through content and methodological reviewers. GCA was piloted before administration to compute contextual relevancy, difficulty index and discrimination index. GCA was directly administered to 130 participants/science teachers randomly recruited from government (n=67) and private (n=63) schools. Results demonstrated that teachers scored 65% of the total score exhibiting above average conceptual understanding. On average, private school teachers have exhibited a better conceptual understanding (M=70, SE=1.60) than their counterparts (M=60, SE=2.11) in government schools (p<0.001; r=0.32). Results followed a similar pattern for the three domains in GCA. However, the difference was found to be significant only on domain ‘fertilization and reproduction’ (p< 0.001; r = 0.38). Of the 33 items, six items (18%) were identified as the most difficult items (score <29%). Findings revealed that teachers’ exhibited better understanding of concepts: site of meiosis in human-body and chromosome numbers in egg, sperm and fertilized egg. It was also found that teachers possessed misconceptions about basics of mitosis and meiosis with inadequate understanding of reproduction concept. Furthermore, teachers found it difficult to reason well in an explicit way. This study provides significant insight into the under-researched area in Pakistani context to inform policy, practice and further research. Keeping the results in view, professional development courses in developing conceptual understanding of teachers could be emphasized. The findings of this study make a valuable contribution to indigenous literature.

In this paper, based on the primary sources, an attempt has been made to discuss the contribution and services of Mawlānā Abū Yūsuf Muḥammad Sharīf (d. January 1951) commonly known as Faqīh-i-Ā‘ẓam and Muḥaddith-i-Koṯalwī in the field of Ḥadīth, the second most important source of Islamic Law. Mawlānā Muḥaddith-i-Koṯalwī having a deep insight in the Science of Ḥadīth has written extensively on this facet of Islamic learning. Mawlānā Abū Yūsuf Muḥammad Sharīf Muḥaddith-i-Koṯalwī through his fatāwā, articles, sermons and books done a great service for the Science of Ḥadīth. He has explained the five pillars of Islam and other rituals in the light of different āḥādīth. Being a Ḥanafī ‘ālim, Mawlānā Muḥaddith-i-Koṯalwī also proved that the Fiqh-i-Ḥanafī, the most popular fiqh among the South Asian Muslims, is in accordance with the authentic āḥādīth. He has also discussed the difference between a Ḥadīth and Sunnah.

Synthesis and Characterization of Chitosan Based Biocompatible Polyurethanes

Polyurethanes can be tailored with outstanding precision for any specific application. The novelty in performance properties of PUs is mainly associated with careful choice of the polyols/polyamines and chain extenders because about 50% volume of PU is comprised of these reactants. Hence, the PUs for desired application can be developed through selecting different polyols and chain extenders. This research project was aimed to synthesis the chitosan based biocompatible PUs for textile applications using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polyethylene glycol (PEG), DPMA and chitosan as chain extender. This study was portioned into three parts. In Part-I, water dispersible PUs were prepared by using mixtures of chitosan (Mol. Wt. 50,000 g/mole) and BDO as chain extender in different mole ratios. In Part-II, PU dispersions were prepared using nanochitosan as chain extender. NCS of 267 nm average particle size was prepared by ionic gelation method. In Part-III, low molecular weight chitosan (CS(LMW)) was used as chain extender. CS(LMW) was prepared by oxidative depolymerization of chitosan with hydrogen peroxide and molecular weight (Mv=12400) was determined by viscometry. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used for molecular characterization of CS-PU dispersions. The physical properties of CS-PUs including dispersion stability and solid contents were determined and correlated with other findings. The dyed and printed poly-cotton blend fabrics were finished with 10% and 20% solutions of all these CS-PU dispersions by pad-dry-cure method followed by the evaluation of physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties of finished p/c fabrics by standard test procedures. The scanning electron micrographic imaging of finished fabrics was also carried out for morphological study. The pill resistance, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), Air permeability (AP), crease recovery angle (CRA), tear and tensile strength of the finished blend fabrics were investigated by standard methods and the results revealed that all the chitosan based polyurethane dispersions improved the UPF, CRA, stiffness and tensile strength of the blend fabrics. However, tear strength of the fabrics was decreased. The superior results for CRA, tear and tensile strengths were obtained by applying CS-PUs based on CS(LMW). Finally, antibacterial properties were evaluated by disc diffusion method and no bacterial growth was observed above, below or in close proximity of the fabrics swatches with visible inhibition zones which were improved with the increase in chitosan amount in dispersions.
