Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine abnormality in women of reproductive age with a prevalence of 5-10% in different populations. The prevalence of PCOM in patients with PCOS has been shown to be ≥ 90% in different populations. Diagnostic evaluation accounts for a relatively minor part of the total costs of providing care and evaluating women with PCOS. Hence more widespread and liberal screening for the disorder appears be a cost-effective strategy in susceptible patients. PCOM on ultrasound is diagnosed if one of the following is present in one or both of the ovaries; Ovarian volume of more than or equal to 10 cc, more than 12 ovarian follicles 2-9 mm in diameter. Ovarian volume on ultrasound is easy to measure and has good reproducibility compared to follicle number. Primary Objective: To determine the correlation between ovarian volume as seen on ultrasound and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Study design: Cross sectional study with retrospective collection of data at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Nairobi Kenya. Results: Data from 206 patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria was analyzed. The point biserial correlation coefficient was 0.2561 (t statistic = 3.78, p = 0.0002). We further calculated the mean ovarian volume difference between the two groups which was -2.53 (95% CI -3.72 to – 1.34). Multivariable logistic regression model was run, ovarian volume was significantly associated with PCOS (p = 0.003), with the risk of PCOS increasing by 15% (AOR 1.15, 95% CI 1.05-1.26) for each unit increase in ovarian volume. Distribution of BMI in patient’s diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome was as follows; 56.6% overweight, 34.5% normal BMI and 8.8% obese. Conclusion: We have shown that transvaginal ultrasound has clinical utility in the prediction of PCOS. Our findings can be applied to the local general

مولانا سید زوار حسین شاہ کے تراجم: ایک تعارفی جائزہ

Hazrat Maulana Syed Zawwar Hussain Shah is the knowledgeable and spiritual personality of the fourteenth century Hijra. There are diverse aspects of his qualities and perfections. A matchless diversity can easily be found in his services related to his scholarly work and reformation of Muslim Ummah. Not only a Translator, Biographer or Poet but he, at the same time, was also an expert of Islamic Jurisprudence and held the position of a Sheikh of Islamic Sufi order of Naqshbandi Mujaddiah. Shah Sahib authored and compiled 13 books. The study of translated works ( Mabda wa Ma’ad, Muarif-e-Ludniya, Maktoobat-e-Masoomia, Maktoobat Imam Rabbani) of Shah Sahib's and discussion on its importance is the prime focus of this article.

A Comparative Study of Personal Constructs of the Self, the Family, the World and the Future of Runaway, Abandoned Children and Controls

Runaway and abandoned children are considered to be among the most vulnerable sections of the population in industrialized societies. Socio-psychological factors associated with running away and abandonment have been well documented but not much work has been done to unravel the mental make-ups of these children that may be the cause of such behaviors. This study explored and compared the ways runaway, abandoned and home-living children view the self, the family, the world and the future. The sample consisted of 28 institutionalized runaway children; 40 abandoned children; and 50 home living children. The main research tool that was adapted for using with children having limited education was the Repertory Grid Technique. In addition to it School Children Problem Scale, and the Hand Test were also used. Results of the study showed that runaway children experience push from the familial abuse and neglect while they experience a substantial degree of pull towards the external world due to the accepting attitude of friends. The three groups appeared to be quite similar in their perceptions regarding self. Results also showed that majority of the runaway children had a vague or no idea of the future as opposed to home-living and abandoned children. More emotional and behavioral problems were reported by runaway children than home living and abandoned children. Findings of the study highlight the critical role played by the push and pull factors in running away as it has been illustrated by the case studies. Key words: grid technique, runaway children, abandoned children, cognitions.
