Introduction: Rheumatoid Arthritis, one of the commonest forms of inflammatory arthritis, has significant societal impact with regards to cost, induction of disability and loss of productivity. This impact is magnified in the presence of comorbid mood disorders, as these constitute independent factors for unexplained flares and relapses. Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between disease activity and depression in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Methods: Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis attending rheumatology clinic at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi were recruited into the study. The patients’ disease activity and functional status were assessed using the Clinical Disease Activity Index and the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire respectively, whereas the level of depression was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was calculated for the disease activity and functional status versus the depression scores, and relationship between the disease activity and depression scores was analyzed using Chi square tables. Results: A total of 60 patients were enrolled into the study, whose mean age was 48.8 ± 13.6 years. There were 52 females (86.7%). The mean duration of RA symptoms was 71.6 ± 86.6 months, with the mean duration of RA treatment being 43.4 ± 64.5 months. Among the study participants, 28.3% had mild depression whereas 35% had moderate/severe depression. There was a strong positive correlation between disease activity and depression (? < 0.001), as well as between physical disability and depression. Conclusion: This study found depressive symptoms in 63.3% of the patients, in spite of the study population being relatively young and having short duration of disease. The significant correlation observed between disease activity and depression illustrates the high likelihood of undiagnosed comorbid depression as a co-existing factor in persistently active disease, poor response to therapy and unexplained flare-ups in the Kenyan Rheumatoid Arthritis population.

Analytical Study of Dual Banking and Earlier Efforts Towards Islamization of Bank of Khyber in the Light of Shariah

The proposal of interest-free banking is very old because Islam restricted the interest base transaction at very beginning after the revelation of prohibition of Interest, noble Quran called it as Riba. This prohibition is of sever nature relatively, Allah says; O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. The suggestion for the establishment of such financial institutions that run according to shariah has been put in queue for about centuries. To get rid from the dominancy of conventional banking system, forced the religious scholar to take initiative in this regard and started interest free banking. It was not easy to switch entirely from conventional banking system to Islamic one as for different technical issues, leads the existent banks to start dual banking system. Bank of Khyber is the first Bank of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa operating as dual banking, i.e. Conventional as well as Interest free banking. This study focuses on analysis of dual banking system of bank of KHYBER in order to know the extent of conformity with shariah standards along with highlighting the earlier efforts of it towards Islamization.

Facilitating a Teacher Through Reflective Practice

This small-scale qualitative action research seeks to explore possibilities and challenges involved in facilitating a social studies a teacher to reflect on her own classroom teaching and learning processes. The study is based on the premise that reflection is significant to improving teacher's classroom practice. For this purpose, an action researcher worked with one social studies secondary level teacher from a community based private school of Karachi. In this regard, the study explores the participant teacher's existing perceptions and practices of reflection in general, and on her own classroom teaching and learning in particular. Subsequently, based on this reconnaissance, a general plan of action was developed and implemented with some variations to facilitate the teacher's reflection. The data for the reconnaissance and implementation of action stages were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted at pre and post classroom observation, classroom observations (through taking running notes), tape recording of input sessions and the researcher's reflective journal. The gathered data were analyzed soon after each action step for reflection and further action. The study reports some possible strategies to facilitate teachers in gaining an understanding of reflection and its practice. These strategies are: a) developing a conceptual understanding through sharing of relevant literature and b) the using Guided Reflection Protocol strategy. The study also reports the challenges faced in the process. Finally the report concludes by presenting key learnings of the researcher as a teacher educator and action researcher and focus for further research.
