People originating from the Indian sub-continent (South Asians) make up the largest ethnic minority group in Britain and suffer from higher rates of coronary heart disease (CIII)) and noninsulin- dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) than the general population. The "classic" risk factors (other than diabetes and insulin resistance) do not explain these elevated rates. Insulin resistance is associated with central obesity, which is more prevalent amongst South Asians than Europeans and the most effective dietary means of preventing or reversing obesity is by reducing fat and energy intake. However it has been hypothesized that regional origins and religious differences within the South Asian community would result in differences in a) food related behaviours of selected South Asian groups b) the foods commonly consumed by the various South Asian groups and c) the nutrient composition of their traditional dishes, such that dietary intake of fat could be modified by use of selected traditional recipes and dishes. Any attempt to develop effective health promotion programmes would require a knowledge of these differences. In order to test these hypotheses two main studies were undertaken. Firstly, the traditional dishes most commonly consumed by members of five South Asian groups (Bangladeshi Muslims, Pakistani Muslims, Ismaili (East African Asians) Muslims, Punjabi Sikhs and Gujerati Hindus) were identified and their nutrient composition ascertained either by calculation from recipes for home-made dishes or by direct analysis in the case of purchased foods. Secondly, food related behaviour was examined in three Muslim groups (Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Ismailis). Wide diversity was apparent in the food related behaviour of the three Muslim groups studied. Whilst first generation females were the main food preparers in all the Muslim groups, food purchasing was the responsibility of first generation males in the Bangladeshi and, to a lesser extent, the Pakistani groups. Religious food laws were strictly adhered to by the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities, although there was an apparent weakening in religious influences over food amongst the second generation. Acculturation in eating patterns was seen across the Muslim groups. Whilst most change was observed in the meals of least importance (eg. breakfast), traditional eating habits persisted for the main meal of the day. The Ismaili group had the most westernised diet and appeared to be aware of healthy eating messages. In contrast the Bangladeshi community adhered to traditional foodways, though large generational differences were seen in the acculturation of food habits in the Bangladeshi and

The unique feature of Islam is its comprehensive code of life. This proves its indispensability and worth as the universal order which accommodates complex issues of human life without compromising on its fundamentals. Hence, it is a matchless way of life on this planet. Keeping in view the modern specification of the current age in respect of those countries which tend to modify their legislations and their political, economic and social institutions as per Islamic framework. In this regard, a part from the fundamental and core Islamic sources of jurisprudence like the holy Quran, traditions of the holy Prophet (Hadith), consensus of Muslim scholars (Ijma) and Analogy (Qias), there are other sources like ‘Decorum’ (Istihsan) and ‘Arbitrariness’ (Masalih e Mursalah) to play their effective and significant jurisprudential role to address the numerous social issues by honoring the customs and norms already prevailing in any particular society. The article under discussion speaks of the distinct characteristic of Islam that it is a religion of nature and takes care of natural necessities of human life. Already prevailing customs and norms in human society are not subject to disregard or straight rejection. Islam puts a considerable endeavor not to confront the wisdom of the society by sweeping its norms and customs unnecessarily. Conditions imposed by Islam to formulate any society are specious enough which accommodate many of the customs and encompass overwhelming norms in it. But being the sincere guardian of the humanity, on the other hand, it does not miss its significant reformative role to play with reference to those customs and norms which appear contrary to its fundamentals

Development of Targeted Nano Drug Delivery System With Hybrid Materials for Cancer Therapy

Targeted treatment of cancer with new dexterous strategies using biocompatible materials is the hallmark of recent cancer research. In this study three innovative designs of targeted delivery systems with hybrid materials have been developed. Two nanosilica based passive systems are developed using stimuli specific to the tumour micro environment for the delivery of anticancer drugs. In zinc oxide based, active targeted system, the technique of receptor mediation through cancer cell membrane for its internalization has been adopted. The first system is hybrid material with nanosilica based bio-responsive drug delivery system. This system has been developed through a facile surface modification of the silica nanoparticles with biocompatible material. It showed higher entrapment efficiency for anticancer drug doxorubicin with sustained drug release behaviour in vitro. Unique feature of surface charge swapping in response to the lower pH of the tumour microenvironment significantly increased the cellular internalization of the nanocarriers into the tumour tissue as compared to other vital organs. The increased uptake and controlled release of anticancer drug co-jointly contributed to suppress the tumour growth in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC7) bearing nude mice. The second nanosilica based passive targeted system focused to target the hypoxic conditions of tumour. Surface modification of the nanoparticles with biocompatible moieties made the system nontoxic for biomedical applications These PEGylated hypoxia responsive nanocarriers contained higher amount of the anticancer drug and showed sustained release of the drug in hypoxic environment with no premature release in physiological or normoxic conditions. The third system is active targeted carrier possessing core material of zinc oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid as targeting moiety. The system showed significantly improved cellular uptake, due to receptor mediated endocytosis in T-cells, with controlled release of anticancer drug. Doxorubicin loaded nanocarriers along with methyl aminolevulinate (m-ALA) showed increased cancer cell destruction in RD cells. The biocompatibility, drug loading and its release characteristics, cell uptake, intra cellular drug release, and antitumor efficacy have been evaluated for the above systems. The obtained results exhibited the success of the carriers for their biological response. These newly designed targeted delivery systems fabricated with hybrid materials possess strong potential to open new horizons in of controlled and site specific delivery of anticancer drugs with increased bioavailability and improved therapeutic efficacy
