This study aimed to explore the relationship between secondary school students’ digital literacy and their attitude towards using information and communication technology across three private secondary schools in Karachi, Pakistan. This study focuses on three major themes: students’ attitude towards using information and communication technology (ICT), digital literacy (DL) and the relationship between DL and attitude towards using ICT controlling for general and ICT related demographics. For this study, a survey questionnaire was developed by adapting two surveys related to attitude and DL. An attitude related questionnaire was adapted from Edmunds, Thorpe and Conole (2012) to investigate attitude and the DL questionnaire was adapted from online European Commission Digital Literacy (ECDL) to find students level of DL. An online version of the tool was used for data collection, and the data were collected through google forms. Additionally, focus group discussions were held to have deeper and richer data that would justify the results of the statistical analysis. The total sample size for this study was 344 secondary school students. About 50% of the participants were female. The results show that the participants’ attitude towards using ICT in education is positive regardless of their general and ICT related demographic characteristics. The analysis of the results from the DL questionnaire reveals an adequate level of DL among students. A majority of the students has positive attitude and adequate level of DL. Correlation analysis revealed a significant association between DL and students’ attitude towards using ICT in education. In addition, attitude towards using ICT was found to be correlated with ICT related variables. Further analysis showed that use of the tablet and smartphone, prior training in the use of computer and frequency of computer use significantly affect students’ attitude towards using ICT. This study has highlighted the importance of ICT related demographics which contribute towards developing students’ attitude to use ICT and level of DL. Based on the findings it is suggested to further research students’ attitude to use ICT and identify school and individual level factors that influence attitude towards use of ICT and DL.

Hazrat Sayyedna Adam (A.S) was the first man and the first prophet. Both Quran and Bible reveal that he was made from clay and was housed in Heavens. There was a most complete freedom for Sayyedna Adam (A.S) except of going near a forbidden tree. Iblees conducted an evil plan and tempted him to taste the fruit of the tree. This let to his descent on Earth. This study attempts to make a comparative analysis of Hazrat Sayyedna Adam (A.S)‘s Incident as mentioned in the Quran and the Bible.

Exploration of Teaching Practices of Reading Comprehension Skills at Public Schools of Gilgit-Baltistan

Teaching English language to the students, and engaging them in the learning tasks especially non-natives, is not an easy task for the teachers in public schools of Pakistan.Teachers of English generally use Grammar Translation Methods (GTM) to teach English which affects the language skills of the students like listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Various other factors also come into play when English language is taught to non-natives like pedagogical skills of the teachers who are also non-native speakers of English. Keeping this in view, this study was planned to explore the current teaching practices of English language teachers and how they engage students in reading comprehension skills in the context of public schools in rural areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. Qualitative study approach of case study was used to explore and observe the teaching practices of the two English language teachers teaching at grade 6. Data was collected through interviews, classroom observations, document analysis, and field notes. Likewise, focus group discussions were also arranged with the students to look at teachers teaching practices from students’ perspectives. The cases of two English language teachers revealed that they were teaching reading comprehension using GTM. That practice was not helpful for the students to get engaged in the process of reading comprehension.The teachers were not engaging students with reading comprehension strategies such as skimming, scanning, questioning, guessing and meaning making. Participant teachers taught English as a subject, but not as a language. The findings of the interviews and observations imply that teachers of English require the teaching skills of language such as reading comprehension. English teachers need support to learn how to engage students in reading comprehension skills in order to make their teaching purposeful.
