Martynia annua L. is a medicinal plant found local to sub-continent where it is consumed for self-treatment of various diseases and ailments. The objectives of this study were to analyze different extracts of plant parts using untargeted and targeted metabolic profiling, identification/quantitation of selected compounds and evaluation of antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of all plant part’s extracts. A validated LC-MS/MS method was used for untargeted and targeted analysis of a range of extracts from the plant. Individual plant metabolites were identified/quantified by comparison with authentic standards, published fragmentation profiles and online database matching. For antioxidant activity, three different assays were used. Tetrazolium reduction method was employed to evaluate cytotoxic activity. A total of 89 compounds were identified and their relative abundances were estimated across five separate parts of the plant (leaves, stem, fruits, flowers and roots).Sixteen of these compounds were identified by comparison with authentic standards and were subsequently ascertained in all plant parts. The identity of 18 glycosides compounds were determined by deduction engaging accurate mass, isotope pattern and experimental collision induced dissociation fragmentation spectra. Fifty five compounds were identified putatively by matching with HMDB (Human Metabolome Database). A number of compounds identified at higher abundance which include: homovanilic acid, syringic acid, trans-ferulic acid, apigenin, luteolin, hispidulin and isorhamnetin have biological properties and also estimated their concentration and independently determined biotherapeutic properties. The plant extracts showed significant antioxidant and cytotoxic activity. These findings significantly extend the plant metabolites identified in the Martynia annua. These results anticipate a biochemical support for future studies addressing bio-therapeutic potential of this plant.

Developing An Improved Heart Rate Monitor With Work-Out Training Android Application And Real Time Audio Coaching

TechnoHeart is a digital way of monitoring heart rate using a Heart Rate Monitor device and an android phone. Moreover, this is made more special through its work-out training which is designed to help users set and achieve their target heart rate and monitor at what training intensity they are during a strenuous exercise. The training is made more interactive as the application has its real-time audio coaching. The need for this application comes from three sources; First, some athletes, non-athletes and even doctors are still using the traditional way of getting the heart rate; Second, training intensity is not monitored and target heart rate is not achieved; Third, most mobile developments do not tailor the need of users who undergo work-out training. With the following needs, objectives were set; First, to connect an HRM (Heart Rate Monitoring) device to an android mobile device and display individual’s heart rate in digital form through mobile; Second, to create a work-out training program using the Karvonen Formula; Third, to enable users know one’s target heart rate by using a Karvonen calculator; Fourth, to notify users in real time with every sudden change and the needed action in order to keep an effective training exercise. The project is to explore this and other similar concepts to develop a design that optimally satisfies all of these objectives. The project addresses all of these objectives while meeting the constraints given. The project was deployed in three different sets of users: The University of Mindanao Athletes, The elderly users aging from 50-80 years old and the other users aging from 12-49 years old. The researchers recommend the use of TechnoHeart for athletes and non-athletes who are aiming for an effective cardiovascular training. And for the next researchers, they can focus on the compatibility of the said application to other mobile platforms like iOS, Blackberry, Windows and etc. And also, they may upload application in the internet such as in social networking sites or any features that would make this project more usable.

Knowledge and Practice of Physicians Regarding Medical Imaging in Kabul, Afghanistan

Background: Medical imaging comprises different imaging modalities and processes to image human body for diagnostic and treatment purposes; therefore, it has an important role in the improvement of public health in all population groups. It is relatively new medical filed and there are multiple imaging modalities in the practice which having different mechanism and sources of imaging formation and different common clinical applications.Objectives: The objectives of this study are to assess the level of knowledge of physicians regarding medical imaging in Kabul, Afghanistan and to identify the factors associated with level of knowledge and practice of physicians regarding medical imaging in Kabul, Afghanistan. Methodology: In order to achieve the study objective, an analytic cross sectional study design was selected. The study was conducted at internal medicine and surgery departments of two public and one public- private hospitals with population of 130 internal medicine and surgery doctors which were equally participated from each medical fields. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Version. In order to compare the mean difference between the total scores of the doctors across disciplines and years of experience, t-test for two independent samples was used. Result: The result of this study shows that the knowledge of participants regarding indication and contraindication of MRI, ultrasound, mammography and plain radiography were appreciative, comparing to their knowledge regarding indication and contraindication of CT scan and fluoroscopic procedures. However, there was some evidence of incorrect answers regarding indications and contraindications of all imaging modalities. In this study, there was a significant relationship between their knowledge and year of experience and no relationship between the knowledge of participants and their especial fields.Conclusion: In conclusion, we can say that there were positive findings related to practitioner knowledge on four modalities regarding indications and contraindications of MRI, radiography, ultrasonography and mammography. However, there was some evidence of knowledge deficit regarding indications and contraindications of fluoroscopic procedures and CT scan. As all medical fields were not included in the tool, more detailed research study for each medical field via separate study tool is recommended.
