Stylistic Devices in Sylvia Plath: A Textual Analysis of 'The Bell Jar' and Selected Poems This research is being conducted to investigate stylistic devices utilized to construct Sylvia Plath’s novel ‘The Bell Jar’ and selective poems from her early and later poetry. The researcher has mainly focused upon the textual analysis of her works. Sylvia Plath holds prominent stance as a post war American Poetess, her works are termed as confessional and slightly auto biographical, comprehensive details of her life are discussed in Chapter 1. Plath’s energy as a writer lies in her personal life experiences, most of her work is autobiographical therefore we are bound to review her personal life to analyze her works. She invested a lot of her energy into writing poetry but her only novel ‘The Bell Jar’ is a poignant prototype of a young women gradually seeping into the realm of mental breakdown. The whole book undergoes symbolism and cynicism in its many layers to unveil the harsh reality of depression and realization of social inequality. Sylvia Plath’s style of writing (in ‘The Bell Jar’) is very simplistic and easy to understand, but is also full of radiant detail..............Sylvia Plath has a pure voice that rings. She is witty. Her words have punch. She paces words well and she uses words well, precisely. A tale of a sane woman in an insane world, or is it anyway a great tale narrated with vivid imagery. The dark humor of the text is a counter to melancholy of the main character. (69:71) This simplistic style is transformed into complicated symbols and metaphors in her poetry. Sylvia Plath is a poet of decadence, death, misery, war, hunger, pain, suffering, angst, anger; passion, animism, and intense scorn are the key images of her works. Her style is also influenced by traditionalists. Her style is narrative and it usually has a first, second or third person narrators. Images of Death and Life for her poems are frequently inculcated in her works. Plath constantly uses metaphors or witty symbols for representation of her ideas. Plath’s works are marred with pessimism, deception, degradation and feministic retaliation towards the unjust hegemony of patriarchic society. Her work presents suffering and sickness for example ‘Cut’, ‘Fever 103 ̊’, ‘Plaster’ and ‘Tulips’. Even in the novel Esther is psychologically disturbed person on the verge of a breakdown, she even struggles to spend a normal healthy life. Though Plath’s works are termed as subjective projections of her own troubled neurotic self, still, her work holds universality of human emotions a feeling experienced by the oppressed classes or gender. The researcher concluded that “The Bell Jar” is a ground basis for her poetry there are many poems which bears references from the novel they will be mentioned in this paper.

Iron deficiency and risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma Iron expression in oral carcinoma

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma caused by excessive substance abuse like alcohol, tobacco etc.  Objectives: Aim of the present study was to evaluate the iron expression in different grades of OSCC and potential of iron staining as a prognostic marker and its importance as an essential nutrient in diet. Methods and Patients: It was a cross sectional study.A total of 40 oral biopsies were evaluated and the mean age of patients was 53.5 years with age range 23-80 years. 14 cases were well differentiated, 14 moderately differentiated and there were 12 poorly differentiated case. Iron staining was performed for all these cases. Results: Iron positivity was observed in 11 (27.5%) of OSCC patients with maximum iron positivity in well differentiated group (64.28%) of age range 20-40 years (70%). More patients had tongue as site of cancer. There was no genderwise difference in iron expression. Iron deficiency was associated with poor prognosis indicating iron as an important nutrient which can prevent OSCC if adequately present in our routine diet. Conclusions: Prevalence of iron positivity in young patients and initial stage of OSCC, indicates the protective effect of iron against oral squamous cell carcinoma

Production, Purification and Characterization of Carboxymethyl Cellulase for Food Applications

Agricultural wastes/byproducts have great potential for the production of value added products with special reference to enzymes. Two indigenous carbon sources namely, wheat bran and sugar cane bagasse were used as substrates for carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) synthesis by Aaspergillu niger through submerged fermentation. The fungus produced highest CMCase activities at 3% level of wheat bran using 30°C and pH 5 over 96 hrs of incubation. The enzyme was purified for its further use in food processing. During the purification process, a 3.05 fold purification of enzyme was observed after gel filtration. Characterization of purified enzyme was carried out to find out the most suitable conditions for the CMCase performance; the best enzyme activity was observed at 50°C and pH 4.5. The enzyme was quite stable and retained 37% of its maximum activity at 90 ° C. The SDS-PAGE of the purified enzyme revealed its molecular weight as 47.1 kDa. For efficacy purpose, the enzyme added feeds were given to the broiler chicks in order to investigate their effects on body performance, feed efficiency and for safety concerns. The enzymatic treatment exhibited positive effects on body weight, carcass weight and chest muscle weight. Non-significant variations in the serum biochemistry and hematological parameters were observed. After safety evaluation, the enzyme was employed at various levels in bread preparation. Different treatments exhibited significant variations in rheological properties of the dough. The CMCase application in the bread making process resulted in increased volume (15.45%) up to a level of 250 IU/100g flour (T 2 ) however, excessive dose showed a decreasing trend for this parameter. The treatment T 2 produced bread with specific volume 3.99 cm 3 /g in contrast to that of T 0 i.e. 3.37 cm 3 /g. The external and internal characteristics of bread were also improved by the enzyme addition. Later, the enzyme application in citrus juice extraction also showed beneficial effects. Although the enzymatic treatment had non-significant effect on TSS, density and pH of pulp and juice however, a momentous reduction in pulp viscosity i.e. 74.79% was observed in T 6 (CMCase and pectinase 50 IU/100g each). Moreover, the treatment T 6 gave more clarified juice with 95.70% transmittance than that of control (78.00%); also resulted in 20.00% increase in the juice yield with 90.00% juice recovery. The sensory evaluation of the enzyme treated juice reflected improved taste, flavor and sweetness however; caused slight color deterioration of the resulting juice. The purified enzyme was also employed in carotenoid extraction from citrus peel and the maximum yield (8.60±0.94 mg/100g peel) was calculated in case of T 4 (250 IU of each enzyme/100g peel). The pigment showed more stability in dark as compared to light at 30°C. Furthermore, higher pigment loss was observed at 45°C than that at refrigeration temperature (4°C). It was also observed that freeze drying of the pigment enhanced its stability. It is concluded from the present investigation that wheat bran has a potential for CMCase production that can efficiently be used in bread production, juice processing and carotenoid extraction.
