Between Homes and Hosts: Life Narratives of South and Southeast Asian Diasporic Academic Women in America Thisdissertationisatransculturalfeministandpostcolonialstudyofthelifenarratives (auto/biographies) of late Twentieth Century South and Southeast Asian diasporic academic women in America. It is delimited to Sara Suleri’s Meatless Days (1989) and Boys Will Be Boys (2003), Meena Alexander’sFaultLines (2003), Shirley Lim’sAmongtheWhiteMoonFaces (1997), and Bharati Mukherjee’s Days and Nights in Calcutta (1977). Located on a larger scale in Asian American literary tradition and focused on life narratives written by diasporic women, this investigation is in the area of Autobiography Studies. The main argument of this study is that, through their construction of relational, hybrid, multiple, and shifting subjectivities/identities in their life narratives, diasporic academic women not only challenge the male autobiography writing conventions but also question and subvert the universalist assumptions of the White Euro-American/Western feminism. This dissertation also argues that, operating from their hybrid viewing positions as academics and making a creative use of their agency as intellectuals, the Asian-American diasporic women in America use their life narratives to disrupt postcolonial polarities and make the imaginary liminal space between home and host cultures a productive site for diasporic articulations. Moreover, this dissertation investigates how they put up with the demands of their intellectual lives and motherhood, and brave the odds stacked against them in their patriarchal native societies and race-/gender-conscious American society and academy. Since they leave their homes, this study particularly investigates how their concept of home changes across time and space. Their experience of straddling two different cultures simultaneously develops in them a sense of be/longing or un/belonging, cultural nostalgia as well as a tendency to assimilate, the degrees of which vary from person to person. Due to their marriages with white North Americans, their distinguished positions as academics in American universities, and multiple migrations, their concept of home changes from originary to imaginary, static to portable, and from singular to plural, constructed through writing. It is through disrupting male autobiography writing practice, questioning the First World feminism, energizing the “intervening space” between cultures, and overturning the traditional postcolonial binaries that South and Southeast Asian diasporic academic women in America problematize and nuance contemporary production of feminist and postcolonial/diasporic knowledge.

Islam is a complete code of life which provides guidance in political, social and economic affairs. Economics deals with very importnt sphere of human life that involves struggle for survival. This struggle is always appreciated because Allah Almighty Himself motivates for it. The basic aim of this is to eradicate poverty and huger and to bring happiness and satisfaction in society but the condition is that all the economic activities should be done with within the limits of sharia. Otherwise the efforts of human beings in this world as well as hereafter will never be successful. In contemporary economic trends, investment in securities is well known and popular. Government and private institutions issue bonds, shares, debentures etc to provide economic security to the people but in various types of sceurities Shar฀‘ah laws are not taken care of. Where, for a Muslim, injunctions of Shar฀‘ah are everything. There are tidings of rewards on obeying these injunctions and warning of punishment on their violation boath in this world and hereafter. Economic experts suggest to invest but People remain uncertain in these schemes. Regarding this objective, in this article few types of securities (Shares, Debentures and Prize Bonds) have been discussed in Shar฀‘ah perspectives and prize bonds were given special attention because of difference of openion of scholars about it. Some alternate solutions which may provide an insight into Islamic fiscal monetary system have been provided at the end.

Inheritance of Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Disease Mymd Resistance in Mungbean

Mungbean yellow mosaic disease, transmitted by whitefly, is most damaging disease of mungbean in all of its growing areas. Genetic resistance is a viable and environment friendly solution, for which resistance source is prerequisite. Total 83 mungbean accessions were evaluated under protected and unprotected field conditions following split plot design. Infection % age and disease severity based scoring scales were compared for their discrimination potential for screening. Disease severity based scoring scale was found superior to infection % age based scale because it categorized genotypes into five groups while only two groups were generated by later. Infection % age ranged from 33.33 to 100% while disease severity index varied from 10 to 75%. Only one genotype (NM 6-68-2) was found resistant (D.I. 10%) while three accessions NM 57, NM 1-32-1, NCM 254-3 were highly susceptible. Disease severity showed maximum correlation with chlorophyll-a reduction followed by 100 seed weight. Path analysis revealed that direct effect of disease on yield reduction was negligible but it caused yield reduction via reduced harvest index and 100 seed weight. Resistance to MYMD is governed by two major genes with additive nature. There was variability in genetic components of different traits under both field conditions.
