This Qualitative, Ethnographic inquiry is done to explore the relationship between Language and Ethnicity as a Negotiated Construct with special reference to Baloch Community in Pakistan. Baloch is a distinct ethnic group for the reason that despite speaking four different languages i.e Balochi, Brahvi, Saraiki and Sindhi, the members of the group identify themselves as one ethnic group `Baloch'. In other words Baloch are multilingual and monoethnic. Baloch are 3.3 % of the total population of Pakistan and Balochistan makes 43% of the total area of the country. The group as a whole basically resides in three countries i.e Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan but 70% of them live in Pakistan and the population concentrates in Balochistan, where a small population is scattered over a large area. The ethnography is done in the backdrop of the current social, political, cultural and ethnic situation in Balochistan. The data is collected in Quetta, the capital city of the province. Observation being the essential instrument for ethnographic research is supplemented by Semi Structured, in-depth Interviews and open and closed ended Questionnaires. Further, Smolicz's Cultural Core Value theory and Tajfel's Social Identity Theory have been taken up as a guiding theoretical and analytical framework for this study. The fundamental investigation lies in answering the set research questions by finding out the `cultural/ethnic core Value' of the group through exploring the role of language in the formation, maintenance and assertion of ethnic identity. Evaluation of ethnicity markers and situations that strengthen the in-group bonding also form an integral part of this study. The findings show that language is an important but not an essential marker of ethnic identity and significance of language can vary within a single group. There are many social factors and cultural elements other than language alone that determine the ethnic identity of the group and its in-group bonding.

A Diasporic Study of Cultural Identity in Ayad Akhtar’s Disgraced and American Dervish

This research studies Ayad Akhtar’s Disgraced and American Dervish to scrutinize Pak-Muslim-American hyphenated ambivalent assimilationist diaspora identity in the complicated sociopolitical institutionalized mechanism functioning behind the distorted version of global Pak-Muslim identity, which is struggling against scripted stereotypes in prejudiced American society, a place which gives no space to diaspora existence to hold on native cultural values and to retain ethno-religious profile. Western hegemonic politics of identity is not just limited to misrepresentation of Pak-Muslim identity. The present research also examines how it regulates a disfigured social profile of Pak-Muslim diaspora by managing a reflexive autonomy which entails a problematized social recognition of Pak-Muslim diaspora identity and a loathing expression of self-recognition and resultantly ensures denouncement of native identity and pushes diaspora towards the maintenance of an assimilationist Americanized identity to escape the tragedy specific to Pak-Muslim diaspora most specifically in post-9/11 scenario. But maintenance of an essentialist or monolithic identity cannot be simplified to apparent Americanized identity as the in-between state of diaspora existence by no means let it develop an essentialist Americanized identity and not even hardliner Pak-Muslim tendency works to retain its originality but it ends in a fractured and fragmented identity that keeps oscillating between two extremes to make sense of its essence or existence. Both texts hit deep into the core of the Pak-Muslim diaspora’s fragmented psyche to narrate the diasporic state of being struck between dual cultural affiliation and plurality of identity by depicting the inconsistencies it possesses. This study manages to approach the Pak-Muslim diaspora identity contextualized in the background of 9/11 and the pre-9/11 Western notion of Islamophobia in terms of fundamentalism and explores it on the dual grounds of self and social recognition. The analysis, far from any notion of fixity, manifests it, as a spectrum between extreme eastern and western divides.

Exploring Secondary School Physics Teachers’ Content Knowledge of Physics: A Study from Gilgit-Baltistan

This survey study explored secondary school physics teachers’ content knowledge of the selected content domains of secondary school physics including: Waves and Oscillations, Heat and Temperature, Electricity and Magnetism and Mechanics. The subsidiary aim was to identify the questions which were responded incorrectly by the majority of participant teachers. Physics Achievement Test (PAT) was adopted from previous research studies and found to be reliable for the sample of this study (α = 0.76). The tool was directly administered to 120 secondary school physics teachers from public (n=57) and private (n=63) schools of tehsil Danyore district Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan. Results of the study showed that physics teachers’ overall performance on PAT was 60% of total score (35). Teachers’ performed better than the overall score in all content domains except Electricity and Magnetism (53%). In order to explore the extent of difficulty of each item of PAT, Difficulty Index was computed for all 35 items. Of the 35 items, 5 fell in the difficult range. Moreover, among the cognitive domains teachers’ demonstrated better performance in the items of Application and Knowledge whereas they found Reasoning domain the most difficult. The study provides significant insights into the existing content knowledge of physics teachers for policy, practice and further research. Future research can be benefitted by conducting a large scale study on a bigger and more representative sample for better generalizability.
