This study was undertaken to know about the locus of motivation and achievement of the university level students and to find out inter-relationship of male and female students. In order to collect data one questionnaire was used which was developed and tested by Dr. Russell F. Waugh, Edith Cowan University, Australia, with his permission to gather data for motivation and achievement. Its validity was confirmed by the group of experts and reliability was calculated through Cronbach Alpha on 100 students not included in the sample. The value of Cronbach Alpha comes out as 0.78. Then results of different students were collected to analyse the data to compare male and female students with their responses. The questionnaire had three main aspects of motivation, linked with two response sets (What I aim for and What I actually do), and an ordered set of subject response categories (none or only one of my subjects, in some, though not most of my subjects, in most, though not all, of my subjects, in all or nearly all of my subjects). Only seven universities were included in the sample which were willing to participate. Pearson Product moment correlation and t-test were used for analysis of the data. It was concluded that the majority of the university level students had the highest motivation level. It is also interesting fact that gender difference was found in the motivation level of male and female students. Data collected through questionnaire from 1267 students was analyzed and tabulated. Three different departments (computer science, management department and social science departments) were chosen to collect data from male and female students. It was also concluded that there was positive correlation between motivation and academic achievement of the university level student and motivation and achievement level of male and female students was higher than that of female students. Another interesting fact was that from all these three aspects constituting the locus of motivation i.e. striving for excellence, desire to learn and personal incentives, the predominant aspect was personal incentives.

Obesity and Healthy Eating Habits

Obesity is a growing problem, most prevalent in the developed countries, especially US. Children and adolescents are gaining weight at a fast pace as compared to their parents. Although, it is very complicated to exactly know the cause of obesity, its risk factors, its prevention in different populations, yet, it has been observed that changes in life style and particularly in eating habits has contributed to an increased obesity incidence globally. These habits include eating junk food, synthetic and bakery products, increased hoteling, increased consumption of meat and unstaturated fats. If we compare the urban and rural regions at a global scale, we may come to know that Obesity and gastrointestinal problems are more prevalent in urban areas. It also indicates that these disorders are mostly attributed to bad eating habits and wrong choices of food which lack nutritional value but cause various disorders. Atleast 2 decades ago, when there was less digitalization and technological advancements, if people consumed high cholesterol diet or meat, they could digest it as they were physically very active. But in these days, there is less physical activity and our digestive systems cannot digest such food. Moreover, junk food may contribute to obesity. No doubt genetics may also has some role which cannot be denied but the modifiable risk factors can be controlled, monitored and may prevent such disorders. However, global investigations in this regard are direly needed to know the dietary habits and patterns worldwide, their effects in different populations, so that policies may be devised and implemented. Parents are also not aware of a proper healthy pattern that meets the requirements of their children. Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) Surveys and then awareness campaigns may play a positive role in this regard. Teaching healthy dietary patterns for different age groups at school level may also serve the purpose.

Techniques for Developing Process Writing Skills in English As Second Language Esl Classrooms

Teaching and learning English revolves around traditional methods in Pakistan. In most classes teachers are the main source of knowledge. They just pour knowledge into their students' heads. Students are passive receivers of language input provided by teachers. Teachers teach different things in their language classes. For example, vocabulary, composition, poetry, prose and the four language skills which are reading, writing, speaking and listening. Most of the time they emphasise on reading and writing but they do not provide opportunities for practicing language to their students. For example, writing classes are not effective for students. Teachers do not allow students to select topics according to their own interest. They just provide topics to the students blindly or give stereo typed topics that students have rote learnt and then write for e. g. my car, my mother and my cat. The same topics are given in the examination every year. So they do not go beyond those topics. Due to these reasons teachers are not able to enhance the students writing skills. From the beginning I was interested in knowing why students are deprived of language learning opportunities which would enable them to write independently in real life situations. Due to my interest and the apparent importance of written English as a second language (ESL), I conducted this study to understand how teachers could facilitate its development in our context. This study shows that teachers need to do collaborative work to enhance their teaching skills. For example, they can plan together, discuss and give constructive feedback to each other which would help them to enhance their teaching skills. They need opportunities and encouragement to enhance their teaching of writing skills. From this study I learnt that ESL teachers need an environment in the school where they can work collaboratively. Moreover, it is imperative that teachers develop their own resources and competence in English language teaching.
