Seed Morphological Studies and Their Taxonomic Significance in the Orders Boranginales and Lamiales from Pakistan

The seed morphological studies of 415 taxa belonging to the orders Boraginales and Lamiales were carried out from Pakistan. In Pakistan the order Boraginales is represented by 4 families viz., Boraginaceae, Cordiaceae, Ehretiaceae and Heliotropiaceae. The order Lamiales comprises 14 families viz., Acanthaceae, Bignoniaceae, Lamiaceae, Lentibulariaceae, Linderniaceae, Martyniaceae, Mazaceae, Oleaceae, Orobanchaceae, Pedaliaceae, Phrymaceae, Plantaginaceae, Scrophulariaceae and Verbenaceae. The seed macro and micro morphological characters are examined, using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detailed seed morphological descriptions, micrographs and keys based on seed characters are also provided. A variety in various quantitative and qualitative seed characters such as number, weight, size, shape, apex, base, colour, surface patterns, indumentum and position of hilum was observed. The seed morphological data were found very rewarding as an additional tool to strengthen the taxonomic decisions not only at family level but also proved useful at generic, specific and infraspecific levels. The data obtained from the seed morphological characters were also analyzed numerically to trace out the phylogenetic affinities for the taxa of the orders Boraginales and Lamiales.
