Abstract
Liver is a vital body organ and has an important role in various body functions. However, it is susceptible to a number of diseases due to pathogenic microorganisms, toxins and other harmful agents. The management of liver diseases is difficult with conventional medicines so there is an increased interest in alternative medicines for improving liver function. Coffee is a commonly consumed beverage and it is found to exert beneficial effects on a body. In this study, the hepatoprotective effects of Arabica coffee beans in paracetamol (PCM)-induced liver injury animal models were determined. Rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. The liver injury model was generated by oral ingestion of PCM at a dose of 1g/kg/body weight of each animal. To evaluate the preventive effects of coffee, the third group received a co?treatment of PCM and coffee. Hepatoprotective effects of coffee were evaluated by testing the parameters of liver functioning enzymes, lipid profile and renal efficiency assays. PCM reduced the levels of the markers of the liver injury. It also reduced the harmful parameters of lipid profile. However there was no significant change in comparison to control. In conclusion, coffee was found to prevent the liver deteriorating effects of PCM along with the restoration of lipid profile in hepatoxicity induced rabbits.
