Abstract
The objectives of this study were to explore the teachers? perception about academically low and underachiever students in 9th and 10th grades of secondary public schools. The study also explored the strategies used by the teachers for helping them learn better and perform to their maximum potential. The study was conducted using survey method. Multi stage convenient sampling was adopted- in the first stage ten secondary schools for girls were selected from Lahore city; in the second stage 143 female teachers teaching 9th and 10thgrades were selected on the basis of information provided by the Head Teachers througha questionnaire and in the third stage 50 teachers were selected for individual interviews, the purpose of interview was verification of data collected through questionnaires. The teachers? perception data about students were verified through their achievement scores in term exams at the selected school. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages. The hypotheses were tested using single mean?t? test at alpha 0.05.Findings reveal, (p=0.000) that, teachers identify and differentiate low and underachiever students and adopt strategies for their uplift. Tests, motivation, extra time/class, drill & practice and counseling were found the most useful strategies for both types of students. The association between the types of students i.e. Low and underachievers and strategies adopted by the teachers were analyzed by using Chi-Square test of association. The strength of association between the type of students and the strategies adopted by the teachers is strong (p=0.000), as there is statistically significant association between the type of students (low and underachievers) and the remedial strategies adopted by the teachers.Strategies used by the teachers for low achievers and found successful were Counseling (48.3%), Motivation (33.5%), Extra time (25.2%), Tests (22.4%), Drill & practice (22.4%), whereas strategies used for underachievers and found successful were Tests (92.3%), Counseling (63.3%), Motivation (58.7%), Drill & practice (43.4%), Extra time (20.3%). The most successful strategy found for low achievers was counseling and for underachievers was tests. It is expected that this study will lead to the teachers? training on changing their attitude towards students performing low in general and those performing lower than their potential.
