Dictionaries play an important role in the process of standardization of a language. Dictionaries are also used to elevate a language and to expand it. Compilation of a dictionary is an intricate process in itself. Once this process was Lexicographer’s oriented but now it is user oriented. English Lexicography has a long tradition and lexicographers are continuously making efforts to produce user friendly dictionaries. But situation is different as far as Urdu lexicography is concerned. The present study aimed at investigating the user perspective in Urdu Lexicography in Pakistan with special reference to children. In the first chapter, after giving a brief introduction to the present research, aims and objectives of this research are highlighted. Basically this study looks at four perspectives: to assess the needs of the target users, to evaluate the existing dictionaries and to propose the design features of a monolingual Urdu learners’ dictionary for children. During this process, we shall also look into the possibilities of collecting an Urdu Corpus as the basis of monolingual Urdu learners’ dictionary for children. In chapter 2, the researcher has discussed the role of dictionaries in language learning. Purpose of this discussion is to highlight the importance of dictionaries as language learning tool. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the researches done in the field of lexicography and an attempt is made to place the current research in the existing body of literature. In chapter 4, research methodology adopted for this research has been rationalized. As users’ perspective dominates this dissertation so it was necessary to investigate the specific needs of the children. The needs of the children are analyzed in chapter five and then in the next chapter selected monolingual Urdu dictionaries for children are analyzed in detail and a comparison is made between the needs of the users and the amount of information provided in these dictionaries. It was found that these dictionaries fail to fulfill the needs of the users. In chapter seven, an experiment conducted to check the effects of the use of a trial dictionary on students’ performance is described in detail. Results of the experiment showed that students performed better in comprehension test with the help of dictionaries. In the final chapter, a user friendly model of monolingual Urdu dictionaries for children has been presented and is explained with the help of some example entries. Possibilities of developing an Urdu corpus as the basis of a monolingual Urdu learners’ dictionary for children are also explored. This study is hoped to promote user friendly lexicographic practice for children in Urdu language. As users are the only judge to evaluate the effectiveness of a dictionary so this dissertation also suggests that users’ needs should be at the core of any lexicographic endeavor in the context of Urdu lexicography in Pakistan.

دارالعلوم ندوہ کے تعلیم یافتہ علماء میں مولانا مفتی محمد یوسف صاحب بہاری ایک لائق فاضل تھے، افسوس کہ انھوں نے ۵؍ اگست ۱۹۲۵؁ء کو بعارضہ فالج لکھنو میں انتقال کیا، وہ ندوی علماء میں فنون ادب عربی میں کامل دستگاہ رکھتے تھے، فراغت کے بعد اپنی زندگی دارالعلوم پر وقف کردی تھی اور اس وقت وہاں وہ ادیب اول کے عہدہ پر ممتاز تھے، باوجود اس کے کہ ان کو دوسری جگہ بیش قرار تنخواہیں ملتی تھیں، تاہم انھوں نے جس خلوص اور ایثار سے تقریباً دس برس مدرسہ کی خدمت کی وہ تعریف و ستائش کی مستحق ہے، وہ نہایت خاموشی کے ساتھ اپنی خدمات ادا کررہے تھے، عربی رسائل میں ان کے مضامین شائع ہوتے تھے، عربی خواں طلبہ کی سہولت کے لیے شبلی بک ڈپو کے نام مصری مطبوعات کی بہم رسانی کا کام بھی انجام دیتے تھے، افسوس کہ ان کی جواں مرگی نے ہماری صف میں ایک ماتم برپا کردیا اور مدرسہ نے اپنے ایک لائق فرزند کے ساتھ اپنے ایک فاضل مدرس کو کھودیا، خدا مرحوم کو جوار رحمت میں جگہ دے، مولوی ابوالحسنات ندوی مرحوم کی وفات کے بعد ہماری برادری میں یہ دوسرا صبر آزما سانحہ پیش آیا ہے، مسلمانوں میں جو قحط رجال ہے اس کو دیکھتے ہوئے، ان نونہالان چمن کی بے وقت پژمردگی کس قدر پُرحسرت ہے۔

موقع الكتاب في العملية النّقدية عند المحدّثين وأهمّ وسائل صيانته دراسة تأصيليّة

In this research paper the method invented by the critic scholars of hadeeth for the maintenance of quality. It is the sake of delivering the hadeeth to us the way it was narrated by the prophet peace be upon him. This study came to highlight the greatness of the critical approach of the Muḥaddithīn, this unique and precedent based approach has been opted and enjoyed the respect of the opponents. I have paid special regard to the timeline, which reflects the evolution of the Muḥaddithīn criticism, from the Era of the Prophet (PBUH) to the end of the Hadīth Narration Era. This paper shows the extent to which the critic scholars go in order to maintain the book; their attention is not limited to the Oral narration as claimed by the opponents of Sunnah and their stooges. This is done by examining the classified works of scholars that had preserved the bases and the rules followed in the criticism process, as explained in this study.

Exploring Effectiveness of the Programme Evaluation Practices Used in the Private Educational Organization in Karachi

This study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of the stakeholders of a Private Educational Organization about the effectiveness of the programme evaluation practices in improving the quality of the academic programmes. The programme evaluation has been in practice in this organization for the last many years with a belief that it has significantly helped the organization to improve and enhance the quality of the academic programmes. For over a decade now, various programme evaluation approaches have been used; however, so far there had been no concerted effort to know how the evaluation practices are perceived by the stakeholders, and whether these practices have really been helpful in improving the quality of the programmes. Hence, this study was conceptualized. For this study, the phenomenological approach was used to explore the perceptions and experiences of the key programme stakeholders of the organization. Nine individuals from the senior academic management were selected through purposive sampling, as they were involved in designing, planning, implementing and evaluating the academic programmes. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The data shows that whereas 1) there is consensus among key stakeholders that evaluation is a key tool for improvement of programme quality, 2) however, not all key respondents were clear about the purpose, approaches and outcome of the programme evaluation at the organizational level. This lack of clarity leads to the confusion in making appropriate judgment about the effectiveness of the evaluation practices as well as the quality of the programmes, and 3) the evaluation is not always an objective and simple phenomenon rather it is a complex process which is greatly affected and influenced by the beliefs, understanding, knowledge and professional hierarchies of the stakeholders in the organization.
