This research was designed to examine the relationship of emotional intelligence with demographic characteristics, academic achievement and cultural adjustment of the university students. The study posits that emotional intelligence is a significant predictor of academic achievement as well as cultural adjustment and that demographic characteristics play a mediating role in these relationships. Cultural adjustment was also considered a significant predictor of academic achievement of sojourner students that can mediate the impact of emotional intelligence on academic achievement. Emotional intelligence was also considered to be a mediating factor in the relationship of cultural adjustment and academic achievement. The participants of the study were 615 students studying in International Islamic University Islamabad. BarOn EQi was used to measure emotional intelligence and Cultural Adjustment Scale was used to measure adjustment level of the students. Academic achievement was taken in terms of students’ CGPA after completing the first semester in the university. Data was collected during Fall 2008 when the participants were enrolled in their first semester in the university. SPSS 12 was used for data analysis and various statistical measures including correlation, regression, ANOVA and t-test, were applied to make inference from the observed data. The results of the study supported the proposed hypotheses and revealed significant relationships among the major variables of the study. Emotional intelligence was found to be a significant predictor of academic achievement as well as cultural adjustment, and cultural adjustment was found to be a significant predictor of academic achievement. The mediating role of some demographic characteristics was also confirmed. In the light of the findings of the study, it was concluded that both emotional intelligence and cultural adjustment are important factors that can affect the academic achievement of university students. Some implications for education include training of university students in emotional skills in order to prepare them better for practical life and providing international students the opportunities to interact with the host community so that they can better understand the new cultural and social environment

افسوس ہے گزشتہ ماہ جناب روش صدیقی بھی رہ گزائے عالم جادوانی ہوگئے۔ مرحوم بلند پایہ اورصاحب فن شاعرتھے۔ان کی شہرت کا آغاز رومانی نظموں سے ہوا جو اس زمانہ کے مشہور ادبی رسالوں میں بڑے اہتمام سے چھپتی تھیں اورجنہیں وہ اپنی خاص پرجوش آواز میں لہرالہراکر پڑھتے تھے۔بعد میں ان کی شاعری حکمت وفلسفہ اورانسانی ووطنی مسائل وآلام کی ترجمان بن گئی لیکن ان کا کلام غامض اور دقیق ہوتاتھااورالفاظ اورتراکیب پرشکوہ وباوقار،طبیعت میں روانی اورجدت پسندی بلا کی تھی۔اخلاقی اعتبار سے بڑے باوضع،ملنسار اورمذہبی حیثیت سے صوم وصلوٰۃ کے اورارادو وظائف تک کے پابند تھے۔انتقال سے چھ سات روزپہلے(۱۴/جنوری)کوشام کے وقت نئی دہلی کے ریلوے اسٹیشن پر اچانک ملاقات ہوگئی توحسب معمول بڑے تپاک سے ملے اورمعانقہ کیا۔کافی ہشاش بشاش اورمگن تھے۔اس وقت اس کاوہم وگمان بھی نہیں ہو سکتا تھا کہ اس عالم آب وگل میں وہ بس اب چندروز کے اورمہمان ہیں اوران سے یہ آخری دید و شنید ہے۔شاہ جہاں پور کے ایک مشاعرے میں گئے تھے وہیں دل کادورہ ہوا اور جاں بحق ہوگئے۔اﷲ تعالیٰ ان کی قبر کو ٹھنڈی رکھے اوران کے پسماندگان کا حامی وناصرہو۔آمین [فروری۱۹۷۱ء]

Paper currency has remained controversial since its advent, until the majority of the modern scholars agreed that paper currency is just like gold and silver, and all the rules and provisions regarding the/of homogeneous and heterogeneous exchange of gold and silver are applicable to paper currency. This viewpoint is widely adopted by prominent modern-day international academies of Islamic Jurisprudence and the same has been preferred by the majority of contemporary scholars in their books, dissertations and scholarly articles. On the contrary, there is a different opinion of majority of the scholars in Indian sub-continent. The reason behind this was that the viewpoint of Ḥanafi school of thought about legal effective cause (᾽illat) of Ribā i.e. Weight is not found in paper currency, so the rules of Ṣarf (Exchange of gold and silver) are inapplicable. So, they opined that paper currency is like Fulūs (metal coins). Furthermore, to stop all the possible ways resulting to/in Ribā according to this opinion, they preferred the viewpoint of Imam Muhammad (R.A) regarding the metal coins and set some precautionary measures. However, the said standpoint has not been deliberated and contested in the contemporary jurisprudential research work as it deserved. This research aims to evaluate this viewpoint in detail, clarifying its roots and evidences while revealing its implications and comparing it with the view adopted by the majority of the contemporary scholars.
