The purpose of underlying study is to improve the understanding that in which way women directors may influence firm corporate outcomes. To conduct this study, data taken from Indian listed firms on National stock exchange for the period of 20082014 to examine the impact of board gender diversity on the firm’s corporate outcomes. Particularly, this study investigates the influence of board gender diversity on three different constructs, firm’s market performance, risk taking and strategic change. First, this study investigates that how market respond to presence of women on corporate boards. Second, this study investigates influence of women directors on firm’s risk taking. Risk taking tendency of women directors may propel or dispel corporate strategy initiatives of the firm in line with internal or external environment of the firm. Therefore, impact of board gender diversity on corporate strategic change is also investigated. Drawing on the role congruity theory, this study hypothesize that the nature of the high-tech sector is consistent with the gender roles culturally defined for women in this sector. This notion is tested by using a panel dataset of Indian high-tech and nonhigh-tech firms. The results show a positive and significant impact of women directors on market performance of firms in the high-tech sector, while this impact is negative on the firms’ performance in the non-high-tech sector. However, the positive effect of women directors on market performance in the high-tech sector does not hold in family-owned tech firms. Thus, study conclude that performance consequence of women directors hinges on the (in) congruity between societal defined female gender role and expected characteristics of leadership. Drawing on the contingency framework, this study further contend that the influence of women executives on firm outcomes like risk taking depends largely on the organizational context of the firm such as the industry in which it operates. To investigate this proposition, this study compares the influence of board gender diversity on firm risk-taking level in high-tech and in non-high-tech sectors. Findings indicate that female executives operating in high-tech sectors take more risk than their counterparts female executives who operate in non-high sector. Interestingly, analysis also reveals that family ownership negatively moderates the impact of female executives on risk-taking in high-tech firms. Drawing on upper echelon theory, investigation for board gender diversity and strategic change is carried out in high-tech and non-high-tech industry. Results reveal that women directors positively affect strategic change in high-tech firms and negatively affect the strategic change in non-high-tech industry. Furthermore, findings suggest that financial slack positively moderate the relationship of board gender diversity and strategic change across both high-tech and non-high-tech sector. This study offers new insight to managers and policy makers that strategic involvement of women directors enables board to deal effectively industry environmental changes in high-tech firms suggesting that women directors’ contribution in board strategy is contingent upon industry of the firm.

Impact of a Non-Dedicated U-Turn on Traffic

Non-dedicated U turn has a direct effect on road safety, capacity and congestion during the traffic flow. U turn can have significant supremacy on traffic flow and headway. Therefore to study the impact of non-dedicated u turns on traffic is the ultimate requirement of the current time. This is a microscopic traffic study in which the data from a U turn (33°59’48.2"N 71°27’30.2"E) on road leading to Hayatabad and Karkhano in Peshawar is evaluated in terms of headway, speed and flow rate of traffic. Factual data is presented which shows that the average time headway surges when the traffic is interfered by the U turning vehicles. The probability density functions and cumulative density functions fit to the datasets of headway are then evaluated by the techniques of anova analysis to determine which distribution is the most suitable one for the data. Distribution data specific with the interfering U turn was taken in a separate set and evaluated. The result obtained show that the Burr Distribution and Generalized Extreme Value Distribution are the optimum to illustrate the headway data of traffic being interfered by U turning vehicles. This ligitimize the utilization of various time headway distributions of vehicles being interfered by U turning for traffic modeling.

Financial Derivatives, Critical Analysis & Empirical Proofs

The purpose of this research is to study financial derivatives from multiple angles. It involves a critical examination of the features and functioning of financial derivatives. It also evaluates the impact of derivatives on the financial system and economy, primarily in the context of various financial crises, including Global Financial Meltdown of 2008. Derivatives are innovative financial instruments having features such as value derivation, leverage, and future settlement. The primary functions of derivatives trade include hedging, speculation, arbitrage, leverage, cost reduction, liquidity, and window dressing. This research is conducted in the context of global scenario rather than for particular economy. It incorporates mixed method approach, which is in line with the theoretical underpinnings of pragmatism philosophy. Primarily, it revolves around qualitative analysis, for which systematic literature review technique is adopted. Purposeful sampling and Snowball sampling strategies are applied for the selection of research paper. Quantitative analysis along with numerical facts about global derivatives trade are presented as empirical evidences; EGARCH technique is applied to investigate the impact of derivatives in enhancing the inflation volatility, whereas VECM is applied to check the causality between spot and futures prices. Case study approach is adopted for the various sections of the thesis. Derivatives contracts generally lack the fundamental constituents of contract theory. Contingent nature of the derivatives allows them to be reported off-balance sheet; modelling based valuation of derivatives is also a complex mechanism. These problematic features have made derivatives an obscured financial product. The regulatory framework for derivatives has number of issues, such as multiplicity of regulations as well as regulators, which create opportunities for regulatory arbitrage. Derivatives are arguably a source of disturbance for real economy; hyperinflation, large scale speculation, exchange rate and interest rate volatility, fragility of financial markets, and banking system etc., get aggravated in the presence of derivatives. Repercussions of derivatives are evident either at larger or smaller scale in various economic crises such as worldwide stock market crash (1987), Japanese Asset Price Bubble (1986-1994), East Asian Currency Crisis (1997), Dot-com Bubble (1996-2001), and Subprime Crisis (2007). Corporations such as Enron, and Hedge Funds like LTCM, were also the victims of derivatives. Subprime Crisis was transformed into Global Financial Meltdown of 2008 mainly because of unprecedented trading volume of derivatives. The domination of derivatives trade has inculcated immense systematic risk in the contemporary global financial setup.
