This dissertation focuses on exploring the determinants of the housing demand in the urban areas of Pakistan. It also delves into the impact of different income groups on the housing demand. The hedonic price model was used for the estimation of analysis. The data pertaining to 14 Pakistani urban areas was borrowed from Pakistan Social and Living Standard Measurement (PSLM) survey 2004-05 and 2010-11, respectively. Overall, two models were used in the analysis. The first one was to estimate the Hedonic rent model that helped in finding out that in high-income group households the rent was greater than the middle-income group households, which was increased in 2004-05 and decreased in 2010-11. The study was applied on lower income groups as well. Affordability has same effect on low and middle-income groups, but for high-income group it turned out to be positive yet the value of coefficient remained on the lower side. This comparison helps in designing appropriate policies in accordance with the current state of housing market. It was found that different factors contributed differently wards housing demand whereas the economic cycles were contrast during both periods of the study. Furthermore, this study provides a policy framework for addressing the factors related to housing demand. In order to control the selectivity bias between the tenure choice and the quantity of housing services demanded, Heckman‟s two-step selection procedure was used. The Probit model was opted for calculating the margins for the probability of a house‟s ownership. Permanent and Transitory incomes were estimated based on the permanent income hypothesis. Another aspect, uncommonly found in studies from developing countries including Pakistan, was separately determining the effects of permanent and more importantly transitory income on housing demand. The aggregate analysis underlined that income, house price, affordability; demographic factors such as age of the head of household, education, household size, number of earners and marital status are the key factors in determining the housing demand in Pakistan.

Importance of Morality in Islam: Development of Moral Values Through Activities by Parents and Teachers As Agents of Change

This study is descriptive in nature and main focus of this paper is to consult Qur’ān and Ahdiths for understanding the concept of morality. Verses from the Holy Qur’ān and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) are consulted to portray a paramount role of parents and teachers that is played as family and public institutions respectively. Moral values like, good manners, respect, loyalty, truth, altruism, reliability, fairness, cooperation, collaboration, honesty, companionship, decency, acceptance, compliance, love, patience and forgiveness are also studied in the light of Qur’ān and Ahdiths. As an end product, inculcation of moral values in youth by their parents and teachers is also delineated.

A Comparative Study of Teaching Methods of Social Studies Techers in Two Secondary Schools in Karachi, Pakistan

Social Studies (SST) is being taught in Pakistani schools from class I-A to VIII as a compulsory subject. The purpose of teaching this subject, according to the national curriculum of Pakistan (2007) is to prepare the new generation as informed, active and participatory citizens of Pakistan. The teaching of this subject has not been taken seriously in Pakistan. The centrally developed curriculum is imposed on the teachers and students without keeping the contextual realities in mind. The teachers and students' voices are hardly listened to in developing and implementing the curriculum. As a result, the quality of teaching and learning SST has declined largely. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore teachers and students' perceptions about effective teaching methods of SST. It was conducted in two secondary schools (one private and one public) in Karachi, Pakistan. Through interviews, classroom observations, focused group discussion and document analysis, the data was collected from both teachers and students. The findings of the study showed that the teachers of SST use multiple methods of teaching such as cooperative learning, Socratic Method, storytelling method, discussion method and recitation method. There were differences between the two teachers. The teacher in public school was using mostly teacher-centered methods whereas the teacher in private school was using students centered methods. Likewise, the students perceive cooperative learning, explaining well, teaching with love and fun as effective methods of teaching SST. The study was important in the sense that it brings the voices of teachers and students forward. Such types of studies are very rare in Pakistan where the teachers and students' perceptions regarding effective methods of SST have been investigated. The study adds, in a small way, to our existing deficient knowledge of the real experience of teachers and students. More particularly, students' voices are often not explored though they are so important in selecting effective methods of teaching SST in Pakistan.
