Fluctuating climatic conditions and increasing dearth of water resources are severely affecting crop yields. The present study was conducted to explore the genetic diversity for drought tolerance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) which can be used in future breeding programs. For this purpose, 200 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) comprising current cultivars, land races and improved lines were phenotyped over two consecutive seasons (2009-2010 and 2010-2011). Analysis of variance showed significant variation in several morphological and physiological traits including peduncle length (PL), extrusion length (EL), awn length (AL), plant height (PH), leaf rolling (LR), waxiness (WAX), relative water content (RWC), accumulation of proline (Pro), seed size (SZ), grains per spike (gr/sp) and yield/plant (Y) under normal and drought conditions during both years. Using multivariate analysis, two data sets C&S (control and stressed) and C-S/C (relative performance) were prepared to examine plant responses to drought stress. 1st principle component (PC) accounted 24.97% variation for the 1st year and 43.85% variation for the 2nd in C&S dataset. For C-S/C dataset, 18.12% and 15.58% variation was observed in the 1st and 2nd years, respectively. For association mapping, 108 diverse wheat accessions were selected to tag molecular markers for drought tolerance using 25 SSR loci located on chromosome 2A. To eliminate spurious associations, population structure and kinship were taken into account using 30 unlinked markers covering all 21 chromosomes. A total of 11 markers were found associated using MLM (mixed linear model) approach with phenotypic variability ranging from 6.56 to 17.8%. The marker wmc455 was found associated with seed size (r2 7.6%) and plant height (r2 7.3%) under drought conditions. The relative water content was found associated with gwm312 under drought conditions for both years’ data. The marker barc124 showed association with three different traits under different treatments. The study detected novel QTLs for drought adaptive traits and can be used for marker assisted breeding to enhance wheat performance under drought conditions.

پتھر۔۔۔؟

پتھّر۔۔۔؟؟

Developing an Alternative Math Assessment Tool Using Speech Recognition

The world today is now in the era of Information Technology. The development of ICT-based processes specifically in the area of assessment in school is now visible. Project LISTEN (Literacy Innovation that Speech Technology ENables) is an inter-disciplinary research project at Carnegie Mellon University to develop a novel tool to improve literacy – an automated Reading Tutor that displays stories on a computer screen, and listens to children read aloud. This study does not provide right or wrong answers for they let the user evaluate the answer. The main objective of this study is to develop an Alternative Math Assessment Tool for Preschoolers using Speech Recognition. These software aims to assist teachers in the review of Math lessons for preschooler using speech recognition. The development of the system utilizes the System Development Cycle approach that includes data gathering to identify system’s expected functionalities, designing the system using Use-Case Diagram, integration of JSAPI for Voice Recognition, using Synthesizer software for reading the questions out loud, a graphical display of teacher representation and a graphical display for every questions in the review. Along in the development of this assessment tool is the implementation of the system. The system was developed using Java Programming language. It also uses MySql database to store data for preschooler, review questions and text answers. In the conduct of the review digital microphone and a speaker is needed. The developed system is capable of creating questions for a particular review, activating a review for the preschooler to take, and record the preschooler’s scores at every end of the review. The system also includes graphical display of questions. In the conduct of the review, the system was able to read out loud the questions, and a 5-second time span for the pupil to answer the review questions. The system will listen and the feedback from the study will display the correctly uttered answer. User testing results indicates an 83% correct response of system against the correct uttered answer of the preschooler.

Improving Social Book Search Using Structure Semantics, Bibliographic Descriptions and Social Metadata

The emergence of the Social Web and social collaborative cataloging web applications have changed the way books are described, discovered and accessed. These applications present books not only through the bibliographic descriptions or professional metadata but also allow users to describe these resources through user-generated content or social metadata. This social practice has attracted researchers under the broader topic of Social Book Search to make it part of the book retrieval process aiming to improve the relevance of search results and understand the impact of the Social Web on the search performance. For this purpose, the classical Information Retrieval (IR) approaches are employed to produce an initial set of search results, which are re-ranked using the social metadata to see if the search relevance gets improved. Although numerous studies found that the social metadata improves over the baseline run, they are unable to exploit fully the potential role of the query-document representation and weighting model, which questions the credibility of such a conclusion. Also, in re-ranking, most of the studies evaluated and compared different metadata features to produce better search results but remained silent about the final shape of re-ranking. To fill these gaps in the literature, this research work considers the contribution of the querydocument representation and weighting model to the fullest to produce a strong classical baseline run and re-ranks it using a multifeatured fusion of different social metadata features. Our best-performing baseline and re-ranking runs outperform the existing approaches on several topics sets and relevance judgments. The findings suggest that the best document representation can be achieved if the social metadata is made part of the search index. The best query representation is achieved using all-topic-fields. The relevance of search results improves with re-ranking the best-performing baseline runs. These findings have implications for researchers working in Libraries, Information Science, IR, and Interactive IR.
