Rice in cereal group is the important food source for more than half of the world population. It has very important position among the cash crops of Pakistan. The country exports high quality rice to different world countries. The present study was carried out to identify loci related to different rice agronomic traits by association mapping technique. For this, a panel of 79 genotypes of Pakistan, Philippine, India, China and Malaysia was evaluated consecutively for three years from 2009-2011. Phenotypic data of different agronomic traits of these genotypes were collected at the adult plant stage. The ANOVA showed that the 79 rice germplasm are differed significantly from each other with respect to all the morphological traits studied. The phenotypic correlation coefficient among all rice agronomic traits was evaluated. The results showed that some of the parameters presented positive correlation, while other exhibited negative correlation with one another. The results of correlation exhibited that selection of higher number of tillers per plant, panicle length, panicle weight, thousand grain weight, number of grains per panicle, spikelet fertility and medium plant height would mainly encourage the rice breeders to achieve more paddy yield in rice. Development of semi dwarf variety will also improve rice yield. So these rice agronomic traits earn more consideration in future rice breeding programs for developing fine grain and higher yielding rice. Population structure of all 79 accessions was determined by using SSR (259) and SNP (733) markers separately and by combing both SSR+SNP markers (992). STRUCTURE software was used to visualize graphically the correct number of sub populations for association mapping study. Recently SNPs are being used frequently for population structure analysis. In present study by using 733 SNP markers on the population, the core collection was divided into two main groups G1 (japonica and basmati) and G2 (indica and other cultivars). G1 included Pakistani basmati varieties e.g. Basmati-370, Super Basmati and Basmati pak while Basmati-2000 showed above 80% similarity to japonica basmati group. Comparison of SSR and SNP result for population structure analysis showed that in case of SSR two at k=2 and four subgroups at k=4 were obtained while in xix SNP only two subgroups at k=2 were found. It may be due to the reason that SSR are multi-allelic markers while SNPs are bi-allelic in nature. So for population structure analysis SSR markers are more informative as compared to SNP markers. Two Statistical approaches such as GLM (general linear model) & MLM (mixed linear model) were applied for association study by using both SNP and SSR markers on diverse rice germplasm different rice parameters. Results illustrated that two different models identify rather different numbers of markers that were strongly associated with the parameters under study. In the GLM approach only Q matrix was used while in MLM both Q matrix and K matrix were used to accurate false positive (superior association). So, the number of markers strongly associated with the traits was much lower in MLM as compared to GLM. Only QTLs above LOD 3 were selected both in GLM and MLM. In these results mostly lower P values were observed in GLM as compared to those from MLM. The phenotypic data of rice agronomic traits such as plant height, number of tillers per plant, first leaf length, first leaf width, first leaf area, flag leaf length, flag leaf width, flag leaf area, panicle length, panicle weight, thousand grain weight, number of grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, paddy grain length, paddy grain width, polished grain length, polished grain width, polished grain shape, cooked grain length, cooked grain width cooked grain shape and yield per hectare were measured. Several markers appeared to be significantly linked to different rice parameters under study. Some of these markers were already reported in previous marker trait association study while many novel markers were also identified. This study has highlighted a unique set of loci which are associated with different rice agronomic traits and can be used for marker assisted breeding to enhance the rice performance under unfavorable conditions. Marker trait associations for number of tillers per plant, panicle length, panicle weight, thousand grain weight, number of grains per panicle, spikelet fertility and plant height which are found to be associated with yield in this study or in previous studies could also improve our understanding about the performance of genotypes.

Cognitive Semantic Study of the Preposition ‘Min’ in the Quran

The preposition ‘min’ is semantically more complex than what the traditional lexicaAl-syntactic approaches held it to be adverb or adverbial of place and time. This paper attempts to investigate the semantic complexity of the preposition ‘min’ from cognitive linguistic perspective to find out its semantic classification and linguistic symmetric patterns. Data has been taken from the Quran to investigate the claim of conceptual metaphor theory that sensorimotor neural structures generates the preposition ‘min’ on the image schema of source-path-goal. The findings reveal that the source-pathgoal image schema is not only at work in the use of preposition ‘min’ in spatio-geometric sense, but also to map the abstract concepts, emotional states and relationship with supernatural entities in spatial terms in the Quran. However, the data also show idiosyncratic behaviour of preposition, attaining different semantic arguments in different linguistic contexts, which strengthen the argument that language use cannot be abridged to static mapping in the human conceptual system. This paper recommends future research on the same preposition or other prepositions to investigate further the source-path-goal image schema in the Quran and Arabic language.

Role of Tin Additions on Properties and Phases of Smco 5 Alloys

The samarium cobalt (SmCo 5 ) magnets provide higher magnetic force density, unlike the Alnico and other previously used magnets. The small sized magnets embedded in the properly designed appliance provide the forces necessary in dental, biomechanical treatments, removable partial dentures and implant prosthodontics. Cast SmCo 5-x Sn x (x=0.01, 0.06, and 0.12) alloys were prepared by arc melting with subsequent thermal homogenization. Microstructural and x-ray diffraction studies revealed that the alloys contain three phases i.e. SmCo 5 , Sm 2 Co 7 and Sm 2 Co 17 . The addition of Sn also caused grain refinement of the alloys. It was found that Sn addition had promoted nucleation of Sm 2 Co 17 , segregation of solute atoms and increase in unit cell volume, consequently, significant augmentation in remanence to maximum magnetization ratios were achieved. The nano-phase structures and magnetic properties of as milled powders were investigated. The Sn additions resulted in development of nanocrystalline structures producing exchange-coupled magnets with better remanence magnetization to maximum magnetization ratios (M r /M max ), typically 0.92 at 9.9 kOe coercivity. In addition, it was observed that the Sn concentrations lead to higher M r /M max ratios and maximum magnetization accompanying lower coercivity. X-ray diffraction revealed formation of 2:17 and 2:7 phases in 1:5 matrix, which were found to be dependent on Sn percentage. It appeared that higher Sn concentrations promoted 2:17 phase and helped in the formation of nano-sized phases. The investigation of sintered bulk SmCo 5-x Sn x alloys elucidated the presence of exchange coupling phenomena. Addition of Sn in the alloys developed nanocrystalline structure that in turn appeared to be responsible for producing exchange coupled magnets. The exchange coupling mechanism was evaluated by switching field distribution (SFD), dc—demagnetization M r (H) and magnetization M(H) curves as function reverse applied field (H r ). Sn additions resulted in increase in maximum magnetization and enhanced exchange coupling phenomena. The energy product (BH max ) of 7.4 MGOe iv(59.2 kJ/m 3 ), remanence magnetization to maximum magnetization ratios (M r /M max ) of 0.97 and remanence coercivity to intrinsic coercivity ratios (H r /H ci ) of 1.75 were achieved for sintered alloy containing 0.01 % Sn. Exchanged coupling and magnetic properties of SmCo 5 alloys containing Sn were investigated in sintered magnets with and without magnetic field annealing. It was found that applying magnetic field along the alignment direction of the samples was favorable for enhancing the reversibility in comparison to annealing without magnetic field. The remanence coercivity to intrinsic coercivity ratio increased from 1.75 to 2.0 with magnetic field annealing. The effect of Sn additions on electrochemical corrosion properties of sintered nanocrystalline SmCo 5-x Sn x alloys in comparison to conventional SmCo 5 binary alloy was investigated with the dc cyclic polarization technique in simulated marine environment. It was observed that Sn additions significantly reduced the corrosion rate up to 84% with only 0.01% Sn and it was further decreased to 90% with 0.12% Sn compared to the binary SmCo 5 alloy. The results showed that the corrosion rate was reduced with decrease in grain size. Scanning electron microscopy revealed pitting mechanism for both the binary and ternary alloys. Improved corrosion resistance of the alloys with Sn alloying is attributed to the interaction of Sn with grain boundary phases altering potential of the electrochemically more active samarium rich phases around the grain boundaries. This work has shown that Sn additions can be beneficial to the magnetic properties and enhanced the corrosion resistance of the alloys.
