Effects of human exposure to selected pesticides on hematological profile, liver and kidney functions, as well as variations in butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) concentrations and BChE gene were investigated. Additionally, pesticides-related knowledge, attitude, pesticides-handling practices, and health-related symptoms, including depression in these subjects were studied. The study group consisted of 427 individuals of similar socio-economic status: 256 farmers and 61 pesticides vendors exposed to pesticides versus 83 non-exposed individuals and 27 non-exposed vendors (control). A structured questionnaire was used for evaluation of attitude, practices and selfreported health-related symptoms including depression. Blood samples were also collected from all the individuals for hematological and biochemical analyses. Depression was more prevalent among farmers with prolonged exposure duration to pesticides and poor pesticides handling practices (P = 0.001); farmers that smoked suffered more depression than the non-smokers. Farmers that did not use any protective measures showed significantly higher prevalence of health-related disorders, such as nervous system effects, eyes irritation, skin rashes, urinary, cardiac, gastro-intestinal, and respiratory problems compared to the subjects taking protective measures. Blood analyses of pesticides-exposed farmers and vendors showed significantly elevated values of urea, creatinine, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), whereas significant decrease in levels of BChE, serum albumin and total proteins, erythrocytes, leucocytes, granulocytes numbers, hemoglobin, haemocrit number, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), platelet count (PLT), platelets distribution width count (PDWC) compared to the level of these parameters in control subjects. Of the study individuals, blood samples of the most affected farmers were selected for genetic analysis of Exon 1 of BChE gene. It was found that a single synonymous SNP A>G was observed at the locus 2417 when comparing with the (gb M32388.1) available in the NCBI. The mutation was observed in all the samples that related with person having pesticides exposure. The present study confirms that pesticide exposure may adversely affect human health and alter vital hematological and biochemical parameters; additionally, alterations at gene level may also occur. Based on the findings of this study, safer and improved agricultural practices are suggested to pesticides handlers (farmers as well as vendors and retailers) to avoid health hazards.

Social Welfare in the Religions of Subcontinent a Critical Study

Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are among the major religions of Sub-continent. The present study highlights the fact that public welfare is preached by all of these religions. Giving alms for the sake of public welfare is an important part of various Hindu religious practices. The role of latest reformist movements is also worth mentioning along with the Hindu literature related with social well-being. Arya Sam฀j movement did many activities for the welfare of people. The founder of Buddhism made efforts for the betterment of mankind and used his religion and teachings to propagate public welfare. Buddhism rejected the caste system and played an important and effective role to minimize the sufferings of affected community. In this regard Islam rises to the highest pedestal as the topic of Holy Quran is Man. It focuses not only on the worldly success of man but also his success in the hereafter. Islam has gone a step ahead than other religions as the activities of public welfare are considered worship in it. The rights of human beings are given great importance and they are given no less importance than rights of Allah. Moreover, the Holy Prophet (S. A. W) took noteworthy steps for the welfare of whole mankind without any discrimination and these are highlighted in this paper. Islam also gives lineaments of the methods and modes of public welfare and goes beyond the other Semitic and non-Semitic religions in this regard. This paper explores and highlights the measures taken by the mentioned religions in a comparative manner and also proves that Islamic concept of social welfare is not only limited to human beings but it also enfolds other living beings and even plants. Islam provides a complete road map of public welfare. Islamic society not only progresses financially but it also focuses on spiritual, ideological and social progress. The aim of social welfare cannot be achieved unless equilibrium is maintained between rights and duties. Islam not only stresses on the rights of the weak but also safeguards the rights of the rich.

Chemistry of Stem of Murraya Koenigii

The present phytochemical investigations described the isolation of chemical constituents from the stem of indigenous plant Murraya koenigii(L.) Spreng which is commonly known as curry plant. This thesis is divided into two parts. PART A Phytochemical studies of Murraya koenigii PART B Pharmacological investigation of isolated compounds In Part A, the introduction describes biosynthesis of carbazole alkaloids, their pharmacological importance and list of previously isolated chemical constituents. In the present study, total eleven different compounds have been isolated from the stemof M. koenigii.
