The city of Lahore is the provincial headquarter of the Punjab province. Lahore has different types of traffic as compared to other cities of Pakistan. The old areas have mixed traffic and the outskirt areas have fast moving traffic. The main factors for traffic accidents are roads, vehicles, drivers, external factors and enforcement by traffic police. The riding quality of roads of Lahore is normal. The external factors such as weather condition in Lahore are not so severe as to cause accidents. The condition of vehicles especially public transport fleet, plying on the roads of Lahore, is alarming as periodic maintenance of vehicles is not frequently carried out. The literacy rate of the country is also an issue. Most of the drivers, especially drivers of public transport vehicles, are not educated. They have problems in understanding the traffic rules, signs and signals. In such a situation their behaviour while driving is unsafe and they come across traffic accidents associated with human losses, human sufferings and economic losses. Considering these facts into account it was planned to study the drivers and vehicles characteristics with special reference to their role towards traffic accidents. The basic objective of this research was to develop Accident Prediction Models (APMs) relating number of accidents occurred per year and to know the causes of accidents of different vehicle types based on the vehicular and driver’s characteristics. By knowing the causes of accidents, another purpose was to suggest some measures to lessen the number of accidents. In this regard, questionnaire/survey forms comprising about 107 vehicular and driver’s characteristics were prepared after going through the world wide relevant literature. Seven types of vehicles were selected for the study and for each vehicle type survey was conducted on different locations of Lahore to collect representative information regarding vehicular and driver’s characteristics including number of traffic accidents experienced. The survey locations were chosen on the basis of most probable presence of different vehicle types within Lahore. The types of vehicles considered for this research study include Motorcycle Rickshaw (Qingqi), Motorcycle, Passenger Car, Wagon, Bus, Auto Rickshaw and Pickup. Representative and justified sample sizes were selected using stratified sampling technique on the basis of number of registered vehicles for each type. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used for analysis of the characteristics. Frequency, correlation and cross-tabulation analyses were conducted for each vehicle. On the basis of these analyses, the most significant driver’s and vehicular characteristics contributing traffic accidents were identified for each vehicle type. With these most significant characteristics, APMs using the multiple linear regression analysis relating the number of accidents per year were developed for all seven types of vehicles. The APMs developed can be used to assess the number of accidents per year for seven types of vehicles on the basis of their vehicular and driver’s characteristics for each vehicle type. On the basis of developed APMs, it is concluded that the main contributing factors towards accidents are vehicular and driver’s characteristics. So it is recommended that by properly addressing the vehicular and driver’s characteristics, incidents of traffic accidents can be reduced.

The role of youth in development of any society is vital. They are the vanguard of any nation. The youth cannot play their role properly and positively unless they understand their responsibilities fully. Creating sense of responsibility in individual of a society especially in its youth is inevitable for the collective and dynamic development of a society. The life of the holy Prophet (r) is a complete guide for all spheres of our life. It is evident from the teachings of the holy Prophet (r) and the general commandments of Islam that the youth play a very important role in socio economic and politico educational development. The holy Prophet (r) showed complete confidence in youth. He delegated them with different responsibilities, provided complete guidance and encouraged them for discharging their duties properly. The companions of the holy Prophet (r) who embraced Islam as a result of his first invitation were young between the ages of 20 to 30. The worst enemy of Islam- Abu Jahal was got killed by two young brothers. Likewise a young man Muṣ‘ab bin ‘Umayr (Ï) was sent to Madina, and Mu‘āz bin Jabal (Ï) and Abu Mūsá Ash‘arī (Ï) were sent to Yemen. Zayd bin Thābit (Ï) was directed to learn other languages. He also compiled the holy Qur’ān in Caliphate of Abū Bakar (Ï). The holy Prophet appointed Ḥuzayfa (Ï) to take census. For creating leadership characteristics, Usāmah bin Zayd was sent to different war expeditions. These are ample proofs of holy Prophet’s confidence he had in the youth.

Food Habits, Feeding Seasonality and Assessment of Damage Inflicted by the Indian Crested Porcupine, Hystrix Indica, in Different Agro-Forestry Systems of the Punjab, Pakistan

In Pakistan, Hystrix indica is abundant and distributed all over the country. It has been identified as a serious pest of traditional as well as non-traditional crops, trees and shrubs. The prospective porcupine belt of the Punjab has been divided into four ecological zones i.e., rainfed Pothowar belt; irrigated forest plantations and embankment of link canals, desert lands and agricultural lands. The fecal pellets and stomach contents of H. indica were collected from the randomly selected sites. An analysis of 131 stomachs contents and 480 fecal pellets revealed that 44 species of different plants were consumed by the porcupine as food. H. indica mainly likes to consume agricultural crops including vegetables and fruits rather xeric vegetation. It is analysed that the diet of the porcupine comprised of vegetable matter, roots, seeds, leaves, stems, spikes, tubers, flowers and pods. Maximum food diversity was found in irrigated forest plantations. The data collected on tree debarking in plantations revealed serious damage to different tree species. The incidence of damage to Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Dalbergia sissoo, Morus alba and Albizzia procera averaged 15.16±2.04, 15.18±1.79, 12.38±1.86 and 3.44±0.04% respectively. However, the degree of damage to different tree species among the plantations showed highly significant difference. Damage to mature tree of Acacia modesta, Populus deltoides and Tamarix aphylla was not recorded. On an average, plant nursery of Bombix ceiba, Dalbergia sissoo and Alibizzia procera received 58.4±4.00, 9.81±2.69 and 6.79±2.23% damage respectively. Up rooting stumps of Dalbergia sissoo, Bombix ceiba and Eucalyptus camaldulensis after transplanting is a characteristic behaviour of Indian crested porcupine that was commonly observed in the plantations or on farms visited. Necessary control measures are also suggested.
