Plant chemicals are an important group and naturally occurring crop protectants that are usually safer to humans and the environment than conventional pesticides with minimal residual effect. The effects of leaf and seed extracts from five plants (Dodonaea viscosa, Adhatoda vasica, Jatropha curcas, Moringa oleifer ,and Ocimum basilicum) on Odontotermes obesus (Ramb.) were evaluated in laboratory. The crude leaf and seed extracts of these plants prepared with different non-polar to polar solvent viz., petroleum ether, n- hexane, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, acetone and water. These extracts were used for bioassay in soil to determine the mortality, change in tunneling behavior, and gut enzymes of workers along with soldiers of the termites. The n-hexane leaf extract of D. viscosa in the soil showed lower LT50 (104.41, 95.53 and 66.68 hours at 1, 5 and 10% concentrations, respectively) than the other plants extracts. The tunneling activities of O.obesus in D. viscosa n-hexane extract suppressed in soil treated with 1, 5 and 10% concentration with minimum tunnel length (63.00, 36.33, 16.67 respectively) than other plants extracts. The active chemical agent of the most effective plant Dodonaea viscosa leaf extract was isolated through gel filtration was used at 1, 5 and 10% concentrations in the final bioassay for determination of lethal time (LT50) for mortality and also activities of total esterase, protease and cellulase enzymes in the mid gut of workers of O. obesus. A reduction in activities of gut protease’s and cellulase’s in the termites collected from plant extract treated soil was observed.

DIGITAL LITERACY AS A FOUNDATION FOR RELIGIOUS MODERATION LEARNING AT SALATIGA'S AL-HIJRAH TINGKIR ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL

The current millennial generation, includes santri, who have digital literacy skills, but unfortunately it has not been matched by ability to use digital media to obtain information and self development. The purpose of the research was to determine the extent to which students’ digital literacy skills, how to use digital literacy as a basis for religious moderation learning, and the obstacles faced during the training on the use of digital literacy at the Al-Hijrah Islamic Boarding School Tingkir Salatiga. This research is a qualitative and participatory action research. Data collection techniques used are participant observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses Mile and Hubermen in the form of reduction, presentation, and conclusions. The research procedure includes planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The result of the studi show that digital literacy can be used as a basis for learning religious moderation. The students at the Al-Hijrah Islamic Boarding School can get digital content in the form of religious moderation material from website, social media, and others. The students also take advantage of digital literacy to create religious moderation content.

Exploring Teachers Performance Appraisal System Using Appreciative Inquiry Ai

This study aimed at exploring the teachers' performance appraisal system using appreciative inquiry, within the qualitative research approach, at a private higher secondary school in Karachi. This aim was fulfilled by generating the data through participation and collaboration of two teachers, a coordinator and two vice-principals of the school, selected through purposive sampling process. The teachers' performance appraisal called "Performance management and reward system" is a dynamic process, accessible for the concerned teachers for the purpose of development and improvement. The main components of the appraisal are classroom observations, students' feedback, pre and post-observation meetings, professional sessions, students' board results, observation by the management, and set targets for the academic year. The teachers are rated, based on the compiled data of the appraisal process at the end of academic year. This appraisal process was reviewed two years ago to make it more development centric rather than only accountability oriented. The findings suggest that the formative nature of performance appraisal process helps teachers to develop their professional life in the school. At the same time, findings also reveal that summative nature of performance appraisal is also useful for taking decisions by the school management. The objectivity of the appraisal process can be ensured through multiple sources for evaluation and introduction of rubrics in the process. Performance appraisal is helpful to empower the teachers by providing a structured path for the continuing professional development. The Five-D Cycle of Appreciative Inquiry was carried out with an aim to improve the process of performance appraisal system in the school. It also helped in bringing forward the good practices through in-depth interviews and focused group discussions. The use of Appreciative Inquiry approach, which is the affirmative discussion on the performance appraisal process, helped teachers to reshape their beliefs and practices as research participants.
