Paramphistomiasis is one of the most pathogenic diseases of domestic animals causing heavy economic losses to the livestock industry accounting for several million rupees annually. Epidemiological study was undertaken at slaughter houses, in sheep and goats of four different districts of Punjab province. Infection rate in sheep was 20.7, 13.3, 30.2 and 25.2 per cent at Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot, respectively, whereas, in goats it was 12.6, 7.6, 23.3 and 16.7 %, respectively. It was noted that in these entire four districts infection rate was the highest during the months of August – September, while the lowest in December. As regard the overall season-wise prevalence, it was the highest during autumn followed by summer, while the lowest during spring. As regard the age-wise prevalence, it was higher in younger animals than in adults. Infection was slightly higher in males than females. Area-wise prevalence indicated that it was the highest at Gujranwala district followed by Sialkot then Sargodha, whereas the lowest at Faisalabad district. Snails have been known to play an important role as intermediate hosts for helminth parasites of animals, birds, man and fishes. Geo-climatic conditions of Punjab and utilization of rivers as a source of irrigation play an important role in dissemination of these snails. For early detection of disease the PCR method was found to be useful. Snails belonging to Pulmonata and Prosobranchia classes were collected from Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot districts. The prevalence of snails was the highest at Gujranwala followed by Sialkot then Sargodha while the lowest at Faisalabad. Seven genera of snails were identified i.e. Lymnaea, Indoplanorbis, Bulinus, Physa, Gyraulus, Bellamaya and Oncomelania. As regard the season wise prevalence of snails, it was the highest during summer followed by autumn then winter, whereas the lowest during spring. Meteorological factors like temperature, humidity, rainfall and pan evaporation played very important role on the causation and spread of disease and snails. Therapeutic trials by using Cannabis sativa, Centratherum anthelminiticum, Nicotiana tabacum and Oxyclozanide were conducted. For these trials eighty animals were used in eight controlled experiments to compare the efficacy of certain indigenous drugs, with an allopathic drug (Oxyclozanide) against Paramphistomiasis. Efficacy of the drugs was measured by determining the difference of eggs per gram faeces (EPG) before and after treatment. Cannabis sativa after administration of a single dose of 50 and 60 mg/kg body weight reduced EPG by 52.23 and 57.44 per cent, respectively. After the administration of second dose the reduction in EPG was 79.16 and 81.2 per cent, respectively. Efficacy of Centratherum anthelminiticum at rate of 50 and 60 mg/kg body weight was 48 and percent, respectively whereas efficacy at two dose level was 82.60 and 89.36 per cent, respectively. Nicotiana tabacum at 50 and 60 mg/kg body weight was 47.82 and 50 per cent effective respectively, whereas efficacy at two dose levels was 78.23 and 84.07 percent respectively. Oxyclozanide at one and two dose levels was 83.5 and 95.65 per cent effective, respectively. The efficacy order was Oxyclozanide Centratherum anthelminticum, Nicotiana tabacum and Cannabis sativa, No side effects were noted due to the use of any of these plant origin drug.

IMMEDIATE EFFECTS OF POST-ISOMETRIC RELAXATION AND STATIC STRETCHING ON QUADRICEPS MUSCLE DURING VERTICAL JUMP IN VOLLEY BALL AND BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Background and Aim: In today sports such as volleyball and basketball, Vertical Jump is considered as important component that enhance the performance of athlete. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of muscle energy technique on vertical jump performance in volleyball and basketball players. Methodology: This Randomized Clinical Trial was conducted at Islamic International University Islamabad. Twenty-nine athletes of age 18 – 35 playing basketball and volley as part time/domestic level were included. Post isometric relaxation technique was applied on group A (n=15) and static stretching was applied on group B (n=14). Surface electromyography activity of quadriceps and abdominal muscle was recorded, Stable time, airtime and vertical jump height were measured using two-axis force platform and vertical jump height was measured by motion sensor. Measurements were taken at baseline and immediately after applying interventions to both groups. Data entry and analysis were done by using software SPSS version 22. Results:   Of the 29 athletes, 15 were in the group A and 14 were in the group B. Immediate assessment of vertical jump height was not significantly improved by post-isometric relaxation relative to static stretching (p=0.594). Muscle recruitment, ground reaction and vertical jump height improved apparently after post isometric relaxation but not significantly. Conclusion: It appears that post isometric relaxation and static stretching of quadriceps shows no significant difference in vertical jump height.

Bioefficacy of Entomopathogenic Fungi and Their Combinations With Selective Insecticides Against Spodoptera Litura F. Lepidoptera: Noctuidae on Cotton

The susceptibility of different biological stages of Spodoptera litura to various strains of entomopathogenic fungi was tested under laboratory conditions at Department of Agri. Entomology University of Agriculture, Faisalabad using the insect immersion method. All biological stages were susceptible to the fungal isolates in a dose dependent manner. All biological stages were not equally susceptible. Eggs and larvae were comparatively more susceptible to infections by entomopathogenic fungi, while pupae were less susceptible. The susceptibility of the insect to entomopathogenic fungi decreased with the advancement in age of larvae of target host. The LC50 values for eggs were 1.13×106, 4.82×106 and 2.45×107conidia ml-1 in M. anisopliae L6, P. fumosoroseus 32 and B. bassiana 25, respectively. The median lethal concentration (LC50) for 3rd instars larvae was1.11×107conidia ml-1 in B. bassiana 25 and 2.17×107conidia ml-1 in P. fumosoroseus 32. Mortality of the larvae increased with increase in conidial concentrations and time elapsed after treatment. Virulence of entomopathogenic fungi also varied from species to species and strain to strain against S. litura. Variations were observed in the susceptibility the insect to particular entomopathogenic fungus under laboratory and green house conditions. The use of fungi as alternative to insecticides and their combined application with selective insecticides is very useful strategy in integrated pest management program. It requires detailed compatibility studies. Therefore, investigations were carried out to evaluate in vitro influence of insect growth regulators and some other selective insecticides on vegetative growth and conidial germination of fungal pathogens, M. anisopliae, P. fumosoroseus and B. bassiana. All tested insecticides displayed significant potential to inhibit growth (6.84- 74.80%) and germination (19.35-85.43%) of the fungal pathogens. Lorsban was the most toxic insecticide to mycelial growth and conidial germination followed by Lannate, Larvin and Pirate. Cascade, Match, Steward and Proclaim were comparatively less toxic to mycelial growth (36.78-48.67% inhibition) and conidial germination (40.32-49.97% inhibition) of the fungal pathogens. Conversely, Runner, Capture, abamectin and Curacron were compatible with significantly lesser inhibition in growth (25.19-36.47%) and conidial germination (27.78-43.66%) of the fungi. Tracer was found safe to conidial germination and growth of the fungi. Effect of combined treatments of entomopathogenic fungi and insecticides against S. litura larvae was investigated under green house conditions at Entomological Research Institute, AARI, Faisalabad. Different insecticides exhibited additive to synergistic effects on toxicity against S. litura larvae, when they were mixed with B. bassiana and P. fumosoroseus under green house conditions. The combined treatment of the fungi and insecticide exhibited synergistic effects except Lannate and Lorsban that displayed additive effects. However, no antagonistic effects were found in any treatment combination. Joint application of the entomopathogenic fungi and Insect growth regulators: Runner Cascade, Abamectin, Capture and other insecticides like Tracer, Proclaim Curacron and Steward seems to be feasible for control of this polyphagus pest. However, it needs further investigations under field conditions
